Probably won't be much stronger than HG/SS, which was a bit below GoW3 and Starcraft 2
Conversely, HG/SS was only 1% from GoW3. And with SMG2 in the way, there's little doubt that it (a remake mind you) was probably number 3 that year. Handheld games bombing in GotY polls is a myth, they just have to be strong enough. Pokémon is strong enough. There's no anti-handheld stigma. we all just dreamed that up. Look how GotD turned out!

LeonhartFour posted... It's not really an anti-handheld stigma, really. It's more of a "They rarely put out anything that can compete with the best console games."
The part where every handheld game there put out a strong performance, some beating major console games. People badly underestimated handheld games just because they were handheld games, but there are some strong ones. Yes, ones competing with console games is rare, but you know what series has that strength? Pokémon. Being from a handheld does not by itself reduce poll strength.

Handheld-games can be strong, but it's not like they often are -- especially in this setting. MK:DS is the only handheld-game to ever make the final-GotY poll, and that was in a weak year (coincidentally also being competitive with a GoW-game that year). HG/SS likely should have been our #3 game in 2010 and BW deserves some credit this year for being our #2-game last time we tested 2011's GotY-standings, but BW is on an outdated system (which probably hurt GoW2 in 2007's GotY-polls) and this year is more stacked than 2010. ME2 = Skyrim, LoZ:SS > SMG2, and either Portal 2 or Batman: Arkham City should beat GoW3...so BW needs to be both stronger and more SFF-resilient. That's a tall order for a game on a handheld from the last generation to overcome in a GotY-setting.
pjbasis posted... Skyward Sword could probably take Wind Waker easily.
I'm not convinced. LoZ:SS will have a hard time competing with LoZ:TP since the periods of the Wii's lifespan they're released in are vastly different; LoZ:TP completely sold GameFAQs on the Wii despite being multi-platform while nowadays that same Wii has struggled to stay relevant the past three years and is about to become irrelevant again.
LoZ:WW also had to face LoZ:MM, making SFF pretty reasonable...so considering LoZ:TP and LoZ:WW aren't that far apart anyway, LoZ:SS will need to prove itself more. It's still the least-hyped LoZ-game, the only one with full motion controls, and possibly the only one that couldn't win its GotY-award -- I think LoZ:WW can handle that.

BW should consider itself lucky that it's on the DS instead of the 3DS, because the 3DS still has a low ownership rate on this site. BW would have had trouble doing well if it's on a system with a poor ownership rate.

Pokemon sounds like the exception rather than the rule.

Not the point. The point is that it can happen, and there are strong handheld games other than Pokémon. Hell, I'd (discounting SFF) take Golden Sun and Metroid Fusion over R/S/E at the very least.
Incidentally, I can't see Skyward Sword being weaker than Wind Waker.

Bacon has a habit of ordering poll options alphabetically whenever there is a poll that contains games in it.

I know CoD has fallen off hard since 2009, but still, god damn. I thought Dark Souls met the hype, but Batman is beating it way way worse than it did back in those hype polls.
That's what I was wondering. They are fairly close alphabetically, so it's certainly possible. Bacon should use at least the top 2 from each poll for the final Multi-plat GOTY, so it won't be an issue of Portal 2 not getting a fair chance of being there.
BTW, just seeing this poll shows how stacked multi-plat really was last year. So much good stuff.
EDIT: Nevermind. Good point about the name being Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

- In the end Zelda couldn't even double Uncharted 3. The hype poll actually overrated it a little, heh. - Dark Souls isn't a threat and will probably lose to Modern Warfare 3... but I don't think anyone apart from a couple of its fans actually suggested otherwise. - Arkham City putting up some impressive numbers. Still think it'll find Portal 2 a tough cookie! - What's all this Pokemon talk? Black/White got thrashed twice by Portal 2 after they were both released... it's not making the final poll. - Prediction: Zelda ends up closer to 3rd place than 1st in the final poll.

Who knew the Rivalry Rumble would be so predictable? SuperNiceDog, that's who.
Hopefully Catherine makes the New IP poll. Be a bit strange to have characters get through a vote-in poll and into the contest and not have the game show up. And it wouldn't shock me if it sneaked into a 128 Games Contest next year, so it'd be nice to have a read on it.

Hmm, assuming it's top two advancing, this could be quite the fight between Dark Souls and MW3 for the last qualifying spot. Dark Souls currently up by 10, but the day vote will give MW3 a boost so it needs to pull away over the next few hours.

Wait were vanilla MvC3 and UMvC3 both released this year? If Bacon ignores The I say he should ignore Ultimate too. Come on, give us a comedy MvC3 vs. UMvC3 match.
