Blastoise would wreck just as much as Charizard, and there are plenty of others with potential also. (ie. I could see something like Snorlax making quite a run)

I highly doubt this. I'm sure Mew, The Legendary birds, Blastoise and Venosaur would all be fairly strong. Certainly above the fodder line. Jigglypuff probably would be too just because of SSB.

I imagine it must have been done at some point in B8's history, but I haven't been around for all of B8's history. Has anyone done a Pokemon tournament? Like, elimination rather than "Save My" style?

I'm not sure if Venusaur would even be the best representative of its own line. I love the entire line, but Venusaur is pretty ugly and Bulbasaur has tons of fans from the anime, also Bulbasaur was a popular pick with beginners because it had a type advantage in both of the first two gyms, but once you got late into the game, Charizard or Blastoise were stronger overall.
