People seem to be against Pokemon winning because it is a kid's game and must be before their time. Some kid games have nifty retro kid cred, though. Stuff like Duck Hunt, probably. Or The Lion King game or Aladdin. And it doesn't have to be video games. I think back to my slinky or lite brite and I love them. Surely Pokemon will deserve this kind of reputation some day, no? Is the series just too relevant without having become mature enough over the years to keep up with the generation it first appealed to? Or could it be the haters were too young when Pokemon was first released and thus they never developed appreciation for it?
Someday these people hating on Red vs. Blue will have to respect them, right?
It's in a weird position. RBY is like the ultimate retro cred, since virtually everyone played it back in the day, but unlike the games you mentioned, its series is still very relevant.

Well, I guess my question is why it gets hated on. When Link or Cloud are dominating, the complaint is that t's nothing new. I'm sure people didn't care when these contests first started because it was novel then. However, if Pokemon was winning way back when, the complaints would probably still be the same. Pokemon is just a kid game so why is it winning? Mario Bros is a kid game, put people don't hate on it for that.
Pokémon already has retro cred. Seriously, bring up video games among current college students, aka everyone who was in elementary/middle when the fad hit. The discussions of "oh man that was the best Mario game" pale in comparison to the discussions of "oh man that was the best Zelda game" which in turn absolutely pale in comparison to the explosion of "oh my god I LOVE POKéMON I HAD SUCH AN AWESOME TEAM WITH MY CHARIZARD but f*** Misty she was such a b*** until I got a bellsprout oh my god pokemon so good." The reason why we see it doing as well as it is now compared to the days of Xenogears beating GSC is because of that retro love and/or people finally being mature enough to stop being afraid to play it because of it being seen as being kiddy.
