Yes it sold a ton but man...that was amazing. I loved that game. Probably my 2nd fav. platformer on the N64 behind Banjo, i'd put it above M64.

As far as N64 platformers go: Banjo Tooie>DK64>SM64>Banjo Kazooie, although all of them are great. There is probably one I'm forgetting, and I have no idea where Conker's Bad Fur Day fits because I've never played it.

Country was a sidescroller. Why would you expect it to be like DKC. MArio 64 was nothing like Super Mario world.

I guess from that perspective it wasn't. I just never hear enough praise for this game. I don't know it's exclusively the DKC fanboys though. DK64 was a damn awesome game.

Nintendo Power named it their game of the year despite that.

Certainly not underrated.

I just expected DK64 to have the Country formula in a 3D environment instead of trying to be like Super Mario 64. It fell far short of that mark.

Well many on B8 love JRPGs and are obsessive completionists.

DK64 found a way to import RPG grinding into the platforming genre.

With different characters, with tons of things to find, with amazing bosses, huge areas to explore. Oh no collecting...like you don't collect things in aNy platformer ever.

The country formula in 3D would have been too linear. DK64 used Mario 64 Blueprint but it wasn't identicle....it had a much larger overworld more playable characters that effected the gameplay and it had tons more stuff to do in the worlds. As well as....

....THE DONKEY KONG RAP!!

It did end up selling a lot more than BK despite needing a $30 Expansion POak but yeah, overtime i just think it didn't resonate with the Nintendo fans as much. It still has it's fans though and we will love it forever!

Hey, I'm not saying I dislike the game. I'm also one of those obsessive completionists I spoke of! I can just recognize that DK64 is too much.

Banjo-Kazooie nailed the "collectathon" 3D platformer, and nothing else since has really gotten it right, not even Banjo-Tooie.

I don't even really know how platforming went down that path. It's like someone played Super Mario 64 and decided that the 100 Coin Stars were the best ones.

That's how I felt after I played BT. Crash Bandicoot Warped came perhaps the closest to the standards BK set, but BK is still in a category of its own as far as platformers go.

BK was a masterpiece. Seriously the finest platformer i've ever played and one of my all time fav. games/ . Rusty Bucket Bay...that Jigsaw inside the ship where you have to get it within 1 minute or something...arrrrh.

At the time of its release, not at all. There was an unbelievable amount of crappy and 'meh' 3D platformers (and Rayman 2, bless its heart) released at the time to ride off of Mario 64's coattails. Since Banjo was really the only thing worthwhile since its launch (again, with the exception of Rayman 2) and the N64 was... well it had Mario 64 so you probably thought of it before Crash and Spyro, DK64 being a 3D platformer with some level of quality and thought in its design was very nice.

I'll always regard DK64 as kind of the FFVIII to the N64's 3D platformers (with Mario being FFVII and... erm... I guess both Banjo games being FFIX) in that it plays with the mechanics of a 3D platformer more than any of the other games did and really experiments. There are a ton of mini-games, a huge amount of variation in the character playstyles, and just a lot to do and play around with. It's a lot of good ideas with some great intentions, and that works for some people and alienates others. It lacks polish in a lot of areas, especially graphically when compared to Banjo-Kazooie and that damn rocketbarrel power-up, but it did a lot of things right for all it got wrong. It's just the amount it presented players with was a bit overwhelming, and players could pretty much go 'yeah well I can do this in Mario/Banjo/Crash/Spyro without this other mechanic I don't like. DK64 sux'.

That and petty DKC fans. Aw poor babies where are Dixie and Squitter? They ruined Squawks? Nothing like DKC? Poor things.

Donkey Kong 64 having huge worlds is one of the problems it has going for it.

The developers saw a mundane activity in other games that took a minute and said, "We can make the world bigger so this activity now takes three minutes! And instead of having the player do it 15 times, they can do it 50 times!"

What was wrong with a bigger world? I think it compensated for the lack of activities with multiple characters and multiple places to explore. It did use the Expansion Pak after all.

DK64 is a great game and I love using different characters with different abilities to perform tons of different tasks. Besides, it's not like you have to collect everything, that's what people who criticize it don't get. I love collecting stuff, but if you're not into that you can just get what you need and get done with it. Super Mario 64 doesn't demand you to get 120 stars to finish the game.

Also, Chunky Kong > other kongs.

You DO have to collect an absurd amount of stuff though. If you want to finish Creepy Castle, you are going to be stuck searching over every part of the damn thing with every Kong. The controls are incredibly poor in so many parts. Swimming was awful, and them thinking the controls were tight enough to warrant stricitly timed jet-pack sections where you had to fly through small rings is ridiculous. The game's lighting was just awful for no reason in a lot of places. The first boss fight with the Armordillo was so poorly lighted due to all the rain that I could barely make out anything that didn't happen when lightning had struck and brightened the field temporarily. And Gloomy Galleon was awful in this regard-once I made the mistake of moving that ship or whatever, it became frustratingly impossible to really see anything in the main area. Not to mention how the game is full of absurdly frustrating mini-games, not the least of them being the absurdly luck based Beaver Bother (the last one being the only one forever keeping me from 40/40 blueprints). And who decided progress at one point would require you to beat the original f***ing Donkey Kong twice? And with the N64 control stick. -_-

Dude I don't know what to say, bright up your TV, those points about lighting are not issues I've ever encountered with the game, nor the controls that were fine for that era (the rings/jetpack thing wasn't that bad).

Something I forgot to mention though and that I agree with is the need to play the original Donkey Kong twice, it was frustrating and probably the biggest flaw about the game since controls were actually awful there.
But the rest of the main game is good fun IMO and I can't see how such a game could be regarded as anything but good, I'd kill (metaphorically) to have a game like DK64 today, DKCR and Galaxies are good but are a completely different experience.
