Have you just started playing your 3DS?

Four months into owning a 3DS, and I don't have problems looking at it anymore. People will adapt. I mean, when television was first introduced, people had a hard time watching it too. But they didn't abandon it.

I can confirm this is true. I couldn't even use the full 3D back when I first got the 3DS, but now my eyes have gotten so used to it I don't even notice it anymore.

...I wonder if I should worry about that.

Start on about 25% of the 3D on the slider.

Gradually increase it as you play longer.

Eventually you will be used to it.

First time I turned on my 3DS, I listened to the instructions and put the 3D slider to full.

This

I used to only handle ~25%, and even that I had to stop after a few hours

but after like a week I've been going max nonstop with no issues

i rarely have 3D on. Most games don't even use it properly and they don't very good. MArio 3D is the only one that benefits. I cannot play MK7 in 3D because ithurts my eyes.

The biggest innovation of the 3DS is the friggin slider.

Is no one worried that there was probably not even time/possibility for Nintendo to do any long term "down the road" tests with this thing to make sure it doesn't do any real damage after years of use?

The 3D isn't really 3D but something called Augmented reality which I think can actually affect your eyes after prolonged use IMO.

There is a game on PS3 called Eye of judgement that I played for hours on end and after about a month or two of constant use I started to have issues like extra sensitivity to light and whatnot. It even started to give me slight headaches frequently but maybe it has something to do with my eyes as I've reached the age of 30. I've always had perfect vision and never experienced any issues really till that game. Anyway to make a long story short I got rid of the game and have not had any similar issues since.

One big thing that I did notice though is that it became harder for me to focus on my collection of Magic Eye books which usually took moments for my eyes to adjust to.

Not sure why 3D would be a problem.

The 3DS can do augmented reality, but that's completely different from the 3D effect of the graphics

I usually have to press the up/down control pad arrows every couple of levels if I play for more than 5-10 mins, not sure exactly what it's doing, but it helps. Sometimes I just turn off the 3D if it seems funny.

Lol at people having problems with the 3D on the 3DS

You are now aware that you're the exact same as your great-grandfather who kept saying TVs were dangerous to your eyes.

Or your grandfather who was sure color-TV was just a stupid fad and people would go back to good old black and white in no time.

Or your father who refused to get internet because it's an evil computery thing that will ruin your life.

You've seen in 3D every day since you were born. The 3DS is no different from what you've always been doing. If it "hurts your eyes", it's all in your head, just like when your mom gets seasick from playing Mario.

It changes whether the 3D effect is more things popping out at you or things going into the screen. I think it's neat to have that option, and yeah changing it up does help for some reason.

But like to see the 3D effect it seems like you have to sort of not focus on it exactly but slightly into the distance, kind of like a Magic Eye but not as extreme as that. Anyway I just find that after playing for 20-30 minutes my focus tends to stay that way, if I'm looking at a screen anyway, maybe not so much if I'm just looking at regular things. Like I come to these boards and the text sorta seems like it's popping out from the background almost.

Worst game I've played so far with the 3D effect was surprisingly Star Fox. Having actual depth to the image made it hard to keep an eye on what was going on up close and in the distance at the same time, and since the game was originally designed for a 2D image where it was easier to do that, there were plenty of parts where it sort of expected you to be able to.

Also I'm not sure if this is normal but the top hinge on my 3DS has a little bit of play to it, like it snaps into the open position but then it can still wiggle a tiny bit. In most games it's not an issue but it's already hard to hold the system steady when I'm mashing the button to fire lasers as fast as I can, and then the top screen starts wiggling around on top of that, so with the 3D on I can barely see what's happening during the most intense parts.

mario and mario kart are both fairly tame when it comes to the 3D in terms of how well it works against your eyes. some games have a really, really messy 3D going for 'em while others are neat. those two are the former, so do get used to them. nano assault is the latter and my god that did not end well.
