Anyway I am like 40 hours into the game or something like that and I am enjoying it a lot. I am writing a review as I go along (I feel I've played enough to get a solid grasp on just about everything in the game) and although the game isn't flawless it does things so far and above what every other game of the genre I've played. The whole world feels alive and brimming with excitement and discovery. I am still blown away.

A bit under 37 hours in at the moment, playing pretty much as a pure mage:

- Destruction Magic seems very gimped and hard to level. If you can get a double cast chain going it's alright, but stuff at a range not running towards you seems overly difficult to hit until they've stopped moving and started mindlessly meleeing your minion/companion, and even then 50% of the time you can't hit the enemy without hitting your tank first. Plus the damage is pretty low.
- Conjuration was very easy to level (probably too easy!) and is fairly solid when you aren't fighting people who can steal your minions or dispel them, but they tend to block doorways and it gets really annoying to have to resummon them to reposition or move down a hallway (I once had to cast 8 Ice guys just to get back to the boss room I had backed out of while kiting his add.)
- Dragons are a bit weak in comparison to Bears, Giants, Mammoths, and pretty much everything non-dragon that can aggro people. I saw a dragon get dropped to landing HP by Mudcrabs of all things. But the dragon fights feel very epic, so it's not a big deal.
- I feel the main quest is much better then it was in Oblivion. To this day I have no idea what the Oblivion main quest is because I just didn't care, here I find myself looking forward to it.
- Sidequest plentiful as expected, quite like the music, do not like random spiders. <<

Gonna meddle in enchanting and alchemy a bit, apparently they are both almost as broken as custom spells were!

Relying on only one or 2 skills will make the game boring and hard for sure, especially if those skills aren't archery and sneaking !

Also, why is Jarl Balgruff the only not awful one, the one of Morthal and Dawnstar are terrible, haven't seen the other.

Well there's Ulfric I guess, and I don't like the Stormcloaks so I guess he sucks too !

I'm playing a two-handed Nord with Heavy Armor, Smithing, and a bit of Archery and I'm having a blast. I don't really have any problems with killing anything except for the frost troll I ran into, which was a bit tough.

Are trolls supposed to be hard?

They usually one require one or 2 resummons before they die, I find Mammoths and Giants much more difficult (even on a 1v1 basis).

I just joined the Storm Cloaks, and as a Dark Elf I regret it. I didn't even realize they hated Dark Elves until after I went back to turn in the killing the ice wraith quest. (Expected way more of challenge out of that quest, btw). Awesome game so far, aside from a few glitches. I keep coming across jaw-dropping stuff that make me say "That...just...happened!"

A close range option obviously !

I personally use 3 skills for combat

Archery for Long Range battles
Destruction for Mid Range battles
One-Hand for Close Range battles

As of now my One-Hand level is like 22 because most enemies never get close enough for me to go melee.

Other skills I use are Sneaking (necessary with archery imo), lockpicking and Pickpocket.

Woo, finally crafted my ebony armor set. Looks better than daedric and dragon imo, so I might just stick with that for the rest of the game despite being weaker.

Also finished up the Compainions questline. It was alright, but so far the guilds haven't been as good as they were in Oblivion. I'll probably head back to doing the main quest now. Also want to save up for the big house in Solitude, but 25,000 is a lot of gold.

Like at the moment my character is from a family of Treasure and Vampire hunter (mostly treasure hunter), why both? Because Vampires are immortal, and they tend to gather a lot of wealth during their eternal life, so they're perfect targets for treasure hunters ! And usually folks pay good money to see those vampires be killed anyway, so it's a win win situation. Anyway, since she's a treasure hunter I made her good in skills that are useful in dungeons, Sneaking to get past opponents that might be too strong and to get that fatal sneak attack, and also the Light-Footed perk, Archery because it is awesome as a weapon, and perfect to get rid of burning oils pots, and also to knock off soul gems in those spell slinging beacons. Lockpicking because you know, dungeons tend to be full of locked stuff ! Fire Magic (exclusively fire magic) because it's an awesome tool to deal with most creatures, and vampires hate fire too ! I say only fire because my girl doesn't like magic, too random for her taste, she still learned a few spells, because as a Breton it comes naturally anyway, but she only learned what would be really useful for her job. Last 2 skills are One-Handed, because while my character doesn't go up close very often she still has to be able to defend herself when it happens. And lastly pickpocket because sometimes you gotta steal that key from someone who's after the same treasure as you !

So yeah, having some kind of background and playing according to it makes the game fun for me, but I'm a really huge nerd in that regard.

is it generally worth it to get rid of the original stone bonuses? The only stones I've found are magicy ones (I'm a warrior) and the steed stone, but I decided the steed bonuses weren't as good as a 20% increase to my skill gains

Does anyone actually like meleeing in this game? I dislike FPS melee to begin with and it feels especially awful and clunky in this game. I nearly quit the game before I tried magic on a whim and OH MAN IS THAT AWESOME.


I'm not very far, only killed my first dragon, there's some issues with the magic too, like it has such a short range. I figured that would get fixed as I get more powerful spells but from some posts in this topic it doesn't seem like it does....


That's really disappointing that they'd craft such a cool world and have such a subpar combat system.

Does stealth like, actually work? Dungeons and stuff seem so linear with enemies directly in the way, it seems like a waste if I have to fight through everything anyways >_>

Amusingly the only time I found that tedious was doing a thieves' guild quest where your companions, despite being incredibly stealthy, decided to rush into combat as soon as you did your first sneak attack.


Also amusing: a daedric prince killing you by teleporting you really high than dropping you.
