The worst thing about this video is how depressing it is to realize that game design has regressed over the last 10-15 years or so. No, don't tell me it hasn't. It has. Some things have gotten better - one only needs look at Mega Man 9 and 10 to see how well they took the "teach the player through playing" thing to heart but applied a couple more decades of game design experience to it - but for the most part it's become really braindead in all but a few games and franchises.

Yeah, I know I should probably temper my enthusiasm for raving about how awesome gaming was in the 90's because I really do know better, there are a lot of issues and the biggest one is that gaming has gotten a lot more complicated than it used to be. So yeah, let me back off a little bit. It's not as easy to teach through gameplay as it used to be, sometimes you have to just sit down with the player and lecture them. But it's something that should really be avoided, if you can. I don't think, for instance, that a basic FPS is really as hard to figure out as people think. Take a look at Half-Life for a perfect example of how to teach the player about the game with as little instruction as possible, and that was back in 1998.
Really the more important thing for me is though is that games have stopped conveying story, world, and themes through gameplay. Games, now that they can have fancy rendered cutscenes, have relied on those to tell a story and are not as creatively thinking of ways to draw the gamer in through gameplay. This is a real problem for me, because this is exactly what a game should be doing. It's a unique medium with so many things that only it can do, stop treating it like a interactive movie. That's one way to do things, but designers just don't feel the need to think outside the box anymore in the game's presentation. ... Copied to Clipboard!

From: Paratroopa1 | #012 If anything, I think games have been getting better about this now than they used to be. I think a big part of that is how in-engine graphics are so good that you don't NEED to have prerendered cutscenes like you did in the PS1 and PS2 days. Look at games like Bioshock, Portal, and Call of Duty 4, they all made great use of storytelling through gameplay. Granted these games are all 4 years old at this point and it's a little sad that I can't think of much else since then that's done this any better, but it's way more than we typically got in the past. And really, old games didn't so much "tell story through gameplay" as they had hardly any story at all, with only maybe a few hints at anything, which were sometimes so subtle that you never noticed they were there until someone pointed them out to you. -- [NO BARKLEY NO PEACE] ... Oh there's games that use show, don't tell. There's just sooooo maaaaany that don't when game designers should know better. They should really really really know better. Mega Man X is such a great example where the game really does build a great sense of feeling powerless in the beginning when Vile kicks your ass up to the point where you're fully upgraded and can kill Sigma. Nothing the game does is even particularly revolutionary, even at that point (Metroid had a similar upgrade system), it's just so well executed by having you empathize with the main character through gameplay. It's not that no games ever do this, but I don't understand why so few do. I guess because it's a lot harder than having a cutscene tell me stuff.

From: Paratroopa1 | #028 Okay I've got to take serious issue with this right here. I know that you want to give Mega Man X credit for a lot of things it didn't actually do because you like it. And you should like it, it's an amazing game. But it didn't actually do this. Fighting Vile the first time isn't hard because you're weak, it's hard because he's unfair. Even without the upgrades you get between them, the first Vile fight is actually harder than the second. It doesn't make you feel like you're more powerful and that's why you won. It makes you feel like you won because this time the story allows you to win. -- [NO BARKLEY NO PEACE] ... Copied to Clipboard!

This. Speaking as someone who tends not to get upgrades much in MMX games, Vile is a joke boss when you fight him for real (takes something insane like 5 damage from charged buster shots, whereas most bosses take only 2), while the first fight is just a plot fight. I like MMX a lot but some of the gushing went a bit far for me there, and I think some of the stuff surrounding the Vile fight was part of that. I also dislike the highway stage, although watching that video does make me admire the way it teaches you walljumping, good stuff there. -- The RPG Duelling League: www.rpgdl.com An unparalleled source for RPG information and discussion ... It was cool when I was 6 years old. I'm jaded about how easy MMX is now, but at the time getting to beat Vile after he kicks your ass is an awesome feeling. We're going to have to agree to disagree on this one - I completely agree with the video that the Vile fight is brilliant.

From: Paratroopa1 | #032 Sorry, but you're objectively wrong. **Mega Man X Spoilers I guess jeeze** See how the fight is actually exactly the same, and you STILL LOSE? Yeah you really became a lot more powerful between those fights, you gained the Suicide Zero upgrade! It's a cool sequence, but it DOESN'T emphasize X getting stronger, because even after all your upgrades, THE SAME THING HAPPENS. -- [NO BARKLEY NO PEACE] ... Copied to Clipboard!

great video, mega man X is definitely one of the best examples but I do feel it's reflective of the times, game designers today try to emulate film too much instead of using gaming as it's own medium.
