This may be a bad idea but oh well, worth a shot!

Post a link to a song that is metal, or at least fairly similar to metal. I will listen to it, rate it, and (very) briefly explain why I gave it the rating I did. This is my genre of choice, so really the point is that I'm curious as to what board 8's taste in metal is, assuming there's any fans here at all. I reserve the right to not listen to an entire song if the first minute or so is unbearably bad, and also to disqualify any songs by Pantera on the grounds that I hate them and their similarity to my username.

One song per user please, once I review yours feel free to suggest another though.

Let's go!

Good thing you don't need a link for a guy from 235 to be able to hear Cormorant, got that covered on my own bases!

Anyway, the song. It's good. Loses points for being a little unfocused at times, the solo at just past the 2 minute mark in particular feels really out of place. So it's not the most coherent song ever, but at the same time it has good riffs and I do enjoy the vocals here, even if I think I like what I've heard from the upcoming album more (on that note, people should be seeking out info on the next Cormorant album, due out in early December, called Dwellings, two songs available so far are pretty great!). Not my favourite Cormorant track (that would be either Ronin or Junta) but a solid one, and damn this write up is bigger than I was going to do originally.

Crashdiet - Riot In Everyone

That list hurts me <_< Okay it's not that bad, I counted about 20 bands that are pretty good (and can already see where my own votes fell with Gorguts and Immolation), with Queensryche being a bit shaky in terms of whether I want to pretend their lengthy time of sucking balances out the excellence of Operation: Mindcrime (and Rage for Order to a lesser extent).

The song. Eh. Kind of catchy, nothing else really sticks out about it to me, and something about the vocals sounds strained in a way I don't like. This is hard to explain, because sometimes strained vocals end up sounding really genuine, sometimes they bug me, and I can't really define the difference. Energetic if nothing else, enjoyable to listen to overall.

Any particular genres you hate?

In general, European power metal and prog metal in general. There's exceptions, since not every European power metal band plays the "flower metal" style, and there's a few good prog bands, but those genres are not my cup of tea as a rule. Not huge on most melodic death metal, at least not the style that's just "harsh vocals over third rate Iron Maiden worship", stuff like Deathevokation is spiffy. Not fond of most attempts to make death metal into something less extreme (like the whole "beauty and the beast" vocal approach) really, usually just means sacrificing everything good about the genre and not adding anything back to the mix.

From: Hydrowhat | #006
also
Gordian Knot - Muttersprache

So basically this isn't my thing <_< The softer sections actually are kind of decent, it's pretty much every time it starts going a bit heavier that it makes me zone out at how pointless it sounds. Also, a bit unfocused, too many different elements that don't gel together making it feel kind of cluttered and lacking direction.

3/10

Huh, I apparently have a really big gap in my mind between a 3/10 song and a 4/10 song. Oh well.

Motörhead - Killed By Death

For some reason songs whose titles feel awkward always get themselves some leniency in my book <_<

I'm not a huge Motorhead fan but I do enjoy them from time to time, can always count on them for some straight forward fun songs, and that's what this is. Hey, do I hear a guitar solo that doesn't feel out of place? Why yes, I do. Clearly I've listened to Slayer recently when a guitar solo that was written rather than produced by a violent muscle spasm actually surprises me.

It's the Bodom guy and originally also In Flames guy, and Dimmu chick doing kinda 80s throwback speed-metal with the style of some melo-death riff action thrown in. Power, sure, prog I don't think so.

Ha, but yeah I know we have very different taste, and personally I can't stand the metal board, since they troll every post on bands they don't consider cool.

It's the general sound of power/prog bands, even if they themselves aren't strictly prog they're going for the same kind of feel as actual power/prog bands like...Pagan's Mind I think is who I'm thinking of. On the subject of 235, it's a good place. The hostility isn't really a big deal if you don't take "this band sucks" as a personal attack, because it's generally not meant as one and if you don't get pissed off you fit in fine. Great place for finding out about stuff.

Anyway, 3 Inches of Blood. For some reason whenever someone suggests this band to me, it's ALWAYS this song. It's energetic and catchy, vocals are too shrill to have much impact, it's okay enough.

5/10

Gojira no good then?

Not a fan. Kind of plods along with nothing going for it, then we get an instrumental break that is just awkward as hell, repeat process, halfway through the song we hit a ridiculous chugging section that makes me decide I've had enough.

I'm talking about actual trolling, I don't care if they think bands I like sucks. For example, one time I posted about an excellent Eluveitie (with 3 Inches of Blood and Holy Grail) concert I went to. The trolls who frequent the board decided to hijack the thread and make it a post what car you drive thread. Which you participated in by the way. Just one example. Long story short, garbage board, I don't post there.

I participated in a thread about what car I drive when I don't drive a car, huh. Now I'm very curious as to what I might have been talking about. Alas, searching "show", "concert" and "Eluveitie" don't show anything archived that I saw so I can't check that out. Long story short, great board, responsible for getting me into a ****ton of great music, glad I post there.

Overkill is a band I really don't pay as much attention to as I probably should, not as familiar with them as I am most bands of equal status. Solid song.

Alright, we're getting silly here <_<

Enforcer is great, Diamonds is one of the several really good traditional heavy metal releases to come in the past couple of years. Doesn't quite match up to Zuul's Out of Time or Christian Mistress' Agony & Opium, but still very good. Good riffs, vocals are a tad on the cheesy side for me but still pretty solid overall, this is a fun song.

Sepultura:

I'm going to listen to the studio version instead just because I hate listening to live songs unless I'm already very familiar with them. Hope that's not too big a problem for you. Unfortunately, this song doesn't do much for me. Feels very bland. Much prefer their earlier stuff.

3.5/10

Songs I'd put at 8 or above?

Suffocation - Liege of Inveracity (AKA the best death metal song ever)

Slough Feg - Hardworlder

Beherit - Gate of Nanna (AKA song from the best black metal album ever)

Znowhite - To The Last Breath

Iron Maiden - Killers

I'm tempted to give Liege of Inveracity a 10/10, although I usually reserve that for one song only (King Crimson - Starless), so let's say 9.5. The others...eh, ranging somewhere in the 8, 8.5 and 9 range, not going to work out my exact preference at the moment <_<

I don't really have anything in mind-- just felt like it'd give more credibility for an outsider to speak for the metal board.

Well because TC said he wasn't a fan of melo-death, or at least all of it. On one hand I don't want to have someone listen to something they're likely to not enjoy. On the other hand however, once you posted that list & I looked at it, the lack of Black Dahlia Murder at all made me so goddamn sad. I was compelled to post them.

The Black Dahlia Murder - Moonlight Equilibrium

Hey it's another song I've been suggested before. And yeah, as you expected...not a fan. Riffs are kind of dull and I don't like this guitar tone much when it's getting way too squeaky. This type of higher pitched vocals don't work for this kind of music really, the deeper vocals at least don't bother me. Breakdownish section in the middle bugs me, I think that's about all I can specifically say.

Getting a 10 would be kind of tough, given that the only two songs I'd give that rating to are ones I've already mentioned :)

Cheesy keyboard stuff and really dull guitars, you're throwing out stuff solely to provoke me now, aren't you? >_> I feel like this singer could probably be good if she were in a band that didn't suck, she has a fairly nice voice even if I dislike what she's doing with it here.

I'm more a metal guy than anything else, next biggest thing for me is prog rock, Rush and King Crimson being my favourites. In general I enjoy listening to a lot of music but it's rare I feel myself compelled to actually seek out or remember stuff that's not metal or older prog rock.

Skepticism - The Gallant Crow

Drags on. And on. And on. Kind of nice for a little while but it just never ever goes anywhere. There's repetition that builds something, and then there's repetition that makes me wonder if I'm stuck in a time loop. At least it's a fairly pleasant shade of boring.

Equilibrium - Snuffel

I feel like this is a cheesy folk metal band, wonder how close my memory comes to the truth...okay, I was pretty on the money, expected the melodic death metal with an "epic" chorus style and that's what I got. Anything close to folk metal that isn't Skyclad or Primordial is not getting the band on my Christmas list. Not that I have a Christmas list, and if I did it's not like I'd be sending cards to random bands whose members I don't personally know, but you get what I mean, I hope.

Sounds a bit muffled (there is something about the production here that is bugging me and I can't quite narrow it down) but otherwise it's pretty fun, if a bit redundant. Love the random screaming near the end, totally silly and amusing.

Oh so you like prog rock, and metal, but generally don't like prog metal? That's interesting, though I can definitely see how that might turn out to be someone's preferences.

I get the sense that for metal what I would suggest you wouldn't like given what you've stated though, since most of the metal I like is prog metal.

Yeah, prog metal just has a tendency to go off into realms of the bad kind of cheesiness and excessive wank and usually doesn't have much real energy, also too often overproduced or overly sterile in production, which I dislike. The prog metal I do like is basically...early Queensryche and Fates Warning. And feel free to post something, it's not like I've been shying away from rating stuff that's not to my preference at all!

This intro would actually be kind of good but it's got some production issues going on that obscures it and makes it sound kind of bleh. Vocals hit and I'm scared and oh god overdone backing vocals. Did I just hear a line about riding through thunder? I feel like this should Rickroll me now, only with some Dragonforce song instead because I'd actually enjoy Never Gonna Give You Up. Anyway, this is pretty silly and lacking anything that appeals to me, but it's not actually making me want to kill myself unlike that Sonata Arctica one, so we're definitely moving up in the world here! Kaledon - The New Kingdom

most song ever

Why is that songs with the word "kingdom" in their title are always cheesy power metal? Okay, there's Conqueror's Kingdom Against Kingdom which is the complete opposite and I'm sure I could think of more examples if I scoured my music collection, but the point is when I see "kingdom" in a song title, I cringe.

And it's well deserved because if you asked me "Hey Panthera, what do you think a song called The New Kingdom would sound like?", my answer would first be "what a weird ****ing question" but then I'd reply "exactly like this song I'm listening to right now".

How is it talking smack to point out that I'd have enjoyed his song? I actually do genuinely like that song even beyond the meme.
