Son of Aurelius - Mercy For Today

Well this is a bit of a change in style from what I've been hearing lately! Tech death though really means it's either Gorguts - Obscura, and thus the best album ever, or it's probably nothing special. Think I've been over why these kinds of vocals bug me, and the music is just too crisp and lacking the genuine energy/atmosphere/anything I want from death metal. Still, it's listenable.

My ears just called the part of my brain that decided to make this topic. They want a divorce. The idea that this could have gone on for another six minutes beyond what I already heard is a sign that there is no god.

Let's throw 235 a bone

Morbid Angel - Maze of Torment

I don't need to listen to this to rate it but I will anyway because this is how you actually do death metal. Still think Altars is a bit of an overrated album overall, it's great but not one of the absolute best of the genre, but it's definitely very good and this is one of the better songs from it. It's a terrible tragedy that the entire band was killed in a calamitous swimming pool accident in late 2010, forever ensuring we'd never hear the much anticipated "I" album that I'm positive would have been an amazing return to form and totally not the newest member of the unholy trinity of the worst ****ing things formerly good metal bands have ever released.

Helloween - Heavy Metal (Is The Law)

Hey it's another cheesy power metal band and...wait, no, early Helloween was actually not utter garbage. Not a huge fan of this particular song, and I'm not as fond of Walls of Jericho in general as I was, say, five years ago, but I can still enjoy this a bit.

Death Anxiety - Bleeding Through

It's amazing how sometimes five seconds already tells you you're going to hate something. And that hate holds up as time goes on. Am I hearing keyboards or something similar at parts here? That doesn't tend to work well in death metal-ish music. Am I hearing clean vocals? At length, too. Tends to work even less! I guess I didn't turn it off as soon as I hit the one minute mark so I shouldn't rate it *too* harshly...

Wintersun - Winter Madness

Oh hey Wintersun. Wonder if Time will ever come out. Duke Nukem Forever did, but we've got a while to go before we're quite at that level of delay! Anyway, many years ago I'd have liked this a lot but my tastes have changed a lot since then and now this just seems bland and trying so hard to seem meaningful and "epic" that it has no impact at all. Not entirely unenjoyable, but I'm still stopping only 30% of the way through the song so it's obviously not working out for me.

Hey, stoner doom, not what I was expecting to be seeing in this topic! So this is pretty good, I'm not as familiar with the style as I probably should be, I tend to enjoy it a fair bit. Song drags on a bit, which is a problem doom often has, but still good enough for me to listen to the whole thing and it's one of the better songs I've been linked to in this topic.

Anyway, this is pretty damn intense, although it's been so long since I last heard this song that I'd forgotten it's a lot less primitive and straight forward than I remembered it being. Hard to say if that's a good thing or a bad thing. Fun song overall.

Pagan Altar - The Crowman

Heh, yeah, and it's not even as old a comment as I'd expect.

Someone needs to explain to me why I rarely listen to Pagan Altar. You'd think that enjoying them every time I do would tip me off that I should do it more often, but apparently I'm dumb. This particular song has a bit of a weak start though, I'm not sure why so many bands love to do these kind of long softer intros when they don't have a singer whose voice really works for it. Actually this entire song doesn't appeal to me as much as I'd hoped, but it's still decent.

Did I? *checks* Okay, it's not so much that I skipped it as it is that I didn't want to get into a lengthy song when I was about to go to bed, so I said I'd deal with it in the morning, and then when I checked in on the topic I forgot that there was still a song from before my last post to deal with <_< Wasn't a deliberate act at least, I can say that much!

There is something in the background of this intro that reminds me of music in Earthbound, though I can't place what part of the game it's bringing to mind. Now over 2 minutes of this and it's wearing out its welcome, some bands just drag **** out way too damn long for no real reason. Finally after 3 minutes we get something else, not the worst overly drawn out thing ever but still kind of annoying. Here we're getting something that seems to be good build up, vocals kick in and this is sounding decent. Then we get a quiet part and some spoken word stuff and god these kinds of sections in songs almost always suck, at least this one doesn't last long and here comes the more energetic and rough sound I was wondering when I'd be hearing. Man this is getting to be an oddly detailed write up. We're back to being pretty good now, although nothing that stands out too much from the standard atmospheric black metal sound, at least until the clean vocals come back. Kind of undecided on how I think of that, and of the whole song really. It has some pretty good parts and some pretty dull parts and the switch between the two is sometimes good, sometimes not. I think in the end I'd say it was worth listening to and a bit above average.

5.5/10

Holy **** that was WAY too long a write up. Don't expect anything like that again, I'm not intending to have such verbal diarrhea in this topic <_<

Not truly metal? GET IT OUT OF HERE!

Nah just kidding, especially when it's both A) fairly close in style and B) something that features Dio, which inherently puts it above a lot of the metal already posted in this topic! So obviously I'm a fan of the vocals here because how can I not be? And early Rainbow was musically pretty good too (hint if anyone wants to see a song get a really high rating from me, you can think about what Dio-era Rainbow song trumps all others!) so this is definitely a good song.

Is that a challenge? If I had to guess, it's either Man On The Silver Mountain...or this:

Sort of a challenge, sort of an invitation to give me an excuse to listen to a really good song! For the record though, Man on the Silver Mountain is *not* what I had in mind. Nor was a live performance specifically in mind. So I'll go the extra mile and review what I think of this, and what I think of the original song, because yes, Stargazer is exactly the song I was thinking of.

Problem with fancy extended intros like this is that they walk a fine line between "building anticipation" and "making me want to get to the song I love already", and this kind of verges a bit into the latter category, not too badly though, and it's definitely pretty cool when the drums kick in and you get to the meat of the song. Different guitar tone goes a long ways to giving this a slightly different feel than the studio version, but it's still Stargazer and still great. Vocals are not ideal, especially on the verses, but honestly, it's not even remotely reasonable to expect anyone to ever capture the magic of the original recording, which is my favourite vocal performance of all time, in a live setting. So given the circumstances, it's not too big a deal. The extended and revamped guitar solo in the middle is a bit interesting, since the solo in the original is excellent, but this manages to feel very appropriate, so I can't complain.

Oh hey guess it's another big write up, "woops".

It's very hard to adequately judge live performances in this context. They're obviously just not the same as actually being there in person, and the amount of times a live recording has even equaled, let alone surpassed, its studio equivalent is...well, a small number, with Iron Maiden's Fear of the Dark being the only example that comes to mind for me immediately. Ultimately, this is still great to hear, but I can't give it *too* high a rating when it does still fail to be as great as the recording on Rising. And as solid as the ending on this version is, it's another thing where the original version just doesn't translate into a live recording. You'd have to be there for it to feel right. All told...

8.5/10

And now to extend this even farther, the original Stargazer is a top ten song of all time for me, features the best vocal performance ever, one of the best climaxes in music (only definitively behind King Crimson's Starless, which I must reiterate is the best song ever), and is generally amazing and anyone unfamiliar with it needs to rectify that right this ****ing instant because seriously, what is wrong with you if you don't know and love this song?

9.5/10

Hell, I'm even going to link to it.

Because why not?

Was Skepticism the one that felt like a standard intro that lasted the length of an entire song? I'm finding it hard to remember.

So three minutes of repetition is overkill, it's not a bad bit of music but honestly, dragging things out with minimal progression is *not* easy to do well and so this still ends up getting to be too much, although it's not unenjoyably so. It doesn't feel like this part really builds up anything for the next section though, it's just kind of there, then they transition to something else, and there's not much unity between the two. The second part of the song is solid enough, doesn't stand out much, although I do like these vocals, they definitely work for the atmosphere the band is going for. So overall, it's stretched out to greater lengths than it needs to be (though thankfully far short of Opeth, the masters of stumbling around incoherently until 3 minutes of decent material is a 12 minute song) but it's good enough stuff that I like it.
