This topic will attract well-read people. I ask you: what do you think is the most recent book to be considered a literary treasure and possibly (or even probably) be widely adopted into academic curriculum one or two generations from now?

And I'm not super well read myself, but I think ASoIaF has the potential to be a classic. It's getting huge coverage and critical acclaim, and it's still ongoing.

I know my college has courses on James Joyce Twain and Faulkner.

As for Yo's question, that's a difficult one. I could see several recent fantasy books making their way into those kind s of specialty courses, but most of the big name literature is children's literature.

While Hunger Games and Harry potter may be popular I don't believe there is enough intellectual depth to either series to warrant their induction into the academy.

I would say the most recent stuff that will get a serious look is the work of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Love in the Time of Cholera in particular.

Terry Pratchett's got to be in with a shot. High fantasy, philosophy, social commentary, and an exploration of the nature of literature within a literary setting.

In fact, on that last one, I'd love to see what some academics make of Jasper Fforde.

Well, to answer a combination of your question and the TC's...I think Haruki Murakami will have a good shot at having a class devoted to him.

I think McCarthy or Pynchon have good chances.

Bob Dylan.

No seriously there was a class at University, on my ENGLISH degree, devoted to Bob Dylan songs. I was THIS close to doing it, but my least favourite lecturer was running the course.

Also to answer Yo: Cormac McCarthy is probably a solid bet.
