Yeah you've only missed the first 15 minutes.

Although the first 15 minutes included Piplup being a fat-headed idiot like I told you about.

Dawn: Piplup, don't get too close to the edge of that cliff!
Piplup: Pip, Pip-lup!!!

*gets to close to the edge of that cliff and falls*

Me: Fathead... >_>

So true, so true! I absolutely LOVE how the show is striving to give each of Ash's (except Pidove I guess), and hell even Iris' and kind of Cilan's pokémon different personalities!

SPOILERS up to how far I've watched in BW

Ash has:

Pikachu, which has the same personality it's always had: brave, confident, eager, etc.

Pidove/Tranquil - can't quite make out a personality for her, but back when she was still a Pidove, the episode when he introduced Scraggy to her made her seem a bit... slow.

Oshawott - who is often overconfident, sometimes has the most adorable false bravado thing going on, and is also quite the Cassanova

Tepig - who's abandonment issues have left it eager to please, and easily saddened when it doesn't live up to Ash's expectations (which is often because he's pretty weak)

Snivy - who's just smug as s***, aloof, intelligent, and has the girl rivalry with Iris' Emolga

Sewaddle/Swadloon - who's stubborn and confrontational until he warms up to you, and then he's just adorable <3

Scraggy - <3 Scraggy. He's a baby so he's totally weak, but he thinks he's strong so he tries to prove himself by being confrontational and acting tough

Palpitoad - who actually IS strong, and also mischievous

Iris has

Axew - who she treats as a baby and who coincidentally is way better than Piplup aka Fathead

Excadrill - who's so proud to the point that he would not battle for quite a while after he let Iris down

Emolga - who isn't intersted in battling and just wants to stuff her face usually, but her mischievous battle style is actually pretty useful

Cilan has

Pansage - who's quite the little actor. One battle he's casting evil leers at his opponent, and the next he's being a gentleman and only using 20% of his power to fight (hilarious scene btw). That scene where Emolga Volt Switches him into an oncoming attack seriously almost convinced me to like Pansage.

Dwebble - who's overconfident, quick to help others, but not keen on accepting help from anyone else at first

Stunfisk - literally have not gotten any kind of vibe off of this guy. The show seems to treat him as a joke.

END

It's really nice that all the pokémon save maybe Tranquil and Stunfisk are being treated as actual characters instead of Tool 1, Tool 2, and Tool 6.

No, not all of them.

Oshawott never intentionally disobeys Ash when he says not to get too close to the edge of that steep cliff. >_>

Also, Oshawott will occasionally realize he's outclassed and chicken out instead of Fathead who's way too stubborn and proud for that jazz. Sometimes he'll push Pikachu out of the way like he wants to battle and then, upon seeing his opponent, will realize he wants no part of it and push Pikachu right back into the fray. It is... hilarious.

It just doesn't stop! Seriously, you have horrible taste in Pokémon movies. 9-11 are the three best movies thus far (although I've never seen 4-6 or 14, so I can't say anything about them. Based on your review, though, 6 seems pretty horrible, much like 7.

And yes, Alice is blond-haired and blue-eyed, just like a solid quarter of Japan's population, if anime is anything to go by. This is an inappropriate time for this, but whatever. I don’t get this. Almost every anime does this, and I just don’t understand. Japan must know that its population is like 99% black- or brown-haired and brown-eyed.

What are you talking about? Blonde hair and blue eyes are code for "foreigner" in anime, especially if they're supposed to be American. It's more like they think that 99% of the rest of the world is blonde-haired and blue-eyed.

Well, I hope you like waiting for climaxes.

… I honestly didn’t intend that, but I’m going with it anyway.

lol Anna

Alberto shows up again and sends out his Lickilicky, so Darkrai starts spamming a move he calls "Dark Void," which randomly knocks out various pokemon around himself other than Lickilicky. It's actually kind of amazing how he hits everything that isn't his target. Darkrai runs off, so Ash chases him, seeing an inexplicable ghostly Bibarel flying through the air (which was one of the pokemon hit by Dark Void). Pikachu lands a thunderbolt on Darkrai, and Ash tells him to leave, but he refuses. Alberto shows up again and tells Lickilicky to attack, and Darkrai finally hits it back and knocks it out. Darkrai disappears, and Likilicky's nightmare, instead of causing it to turn into a ghost like Biberal’s did, turns Alberto into a Lickilicky. No, it’s still Alberto. He’s just a Lickilicky now, I guess. Don’t ask questions that you know I don’t have answers to.

Well, Dark Void is extremely inaccurate--I think its accuracy is like 60% or something, but it does hit both foes in a double battle. ...Huh, I just checked Bulbapedia to see what it would do in a triple battle (it hits all three foes if Darkrai's in the middle, but only the two closest if Darkrai's on one of the sides), and its accuracy is 80% in Gen V.

And yes, now you know why Alice had to declare her love for Tonio so early rather than angsting over possibly marrying Alberto. Because Alberto spends half the movie as a Lickilicky.

Why didn't Darkrai just tell everyone this instead of acting as confusingly as possible to the humans he was protecting?

You should be used to this by now; it's a very common trope.

Meanwhile, Nurse Joy and Brock evacuate the townspeople into the garden while the nameless pokemon trainers have their pokemon attempt to slow down Dialga and Palkia

They totally have names. In the original Japanese, their names are even actually used in the movie! But they have dub names, too.

external image

Bah, Ash's first two partners had better.

Don't worry, we get no explanation as to why, nor why this then stops the town from disintegrating. The tower now magically grows into a tree or something, I have no idea what's going on.

It grows giant angel wings for some reason, Dialga and Palkia are pacified, Palkia's wound is healed, and Tonio declares this to be Aracian. Dialga departs into another dimension or something, and Ash tells Palkia to restore the town to the way it was before it destroyed it. It returns the town to the island, and somehow everything is back to normal, including all of the buildings and stuff. I would complain, but honestly, it makes just as much sense as the glowing wings growing out of the tower.

...Okay, yeah, that's messed up. I don't get it, either, but I still like the direction that the writers had been going with the Sinnoh movies; it's a lot darker than most of the early ones except for the first one.

Piplup's biggest problem is that it gets jealous. Honestly, I really get the feeling that he is in love with his trainer. That schtick was only marginally funny when it was Ash and Chikorita (although it became funnier after Chikorita evolved because of Bayleef tackling Ash to the ground, which is the type of physical comedy we normally only get from James and his grass types), and it wasn't very good at all with Aipom in Chikorita's role (though mercifully that went away after he traded Aipom to Dawn), but something about the gender reversal makes it even more grating.

It's dark, but that's it. The plot still makes no sense in this movie and the entire climax is solved by something that's never explained.

It is the end of the sentence. And this movie wasn't great, at its best.

What are you talking about? Blonde hair and blue eyes are code for "foreigner" in anime, especially if they're supposed to be American. It's more like they think that 99% of the rest of the world is blonde-haired and blue-eyed.

That can't be right, unless every blond/blue-eyed person the heroes meet (and they meet a lot of them) is foreign. And then there are all of the other hair and eye colored people they meet.

Really? That's... actually interesting. I didn't know that. It's still funny that Darkrai hits like a dozen completely innocent pokemon, but still, thanks for telling me that.

Top-Down Training!
"I bet you two that every pokemon in there wants us to steal them!"
"The poor dears are just not aware of it yet."

Score: 6.5/10

The heroes are at a pokemon center, watching a recorded battle on the TV between Lucian and Cynthia. Lucian's Bronzong does its best, but Cynthia's Garchomp defeats it with ease. The heroes hear from some random kid that Cynthia is in the nearby Amity Square, so they rush there immediately.

She's inspecting a ruin. Alright then. They also see Paul, who brushes off Ash when he asks how many badges he has. Paul challenges Cynthia to a six-on-six battle, who accepts it even though Lucian denied Ash's challenge because he was in the Sinnoh League and Paul is also in the screw it. This comes off to me like a kid on a high school basketball team challenging Michael Jordon to a one-on-one and actually getting his challenge accepted, but whatever.

She sends out Garchomp, and Paul sends out-- Chimchar? It quickly proves more powerful than it was earlier, but, seriously, it's Cynthia's Garchomp. It lets Chimchar hit it with fire spin and then defeats it easily. Paul is somehow angry with Chimchar for losing even though it's Cynthia, which annoys her, but she says nothing. He sends out Weavile to use blizzard and ice beam, but Garchomp is still so powerful that it defeats it easily. Paul sends out a freaking Murkrow next, which loses even faster than Chimchar when Garchomp uses giga impact. He then surprises everyone with a Torterra.

Torterra quickly proves to actually be competent, taking advantage of Garchomp's recharging time from giga impact to drain its health. This would be clever if the writers didn't frequently have pokemon spam hyper beam, but okay. Despite Torterra's quick and powerful hit, Garchomp recovers and defeats it in one hit with brick break. Paul surrenders at this point, realizing that he can’t win… although he was never going to win, anyway, as far as I can tell, this was just an exercise to defeat Garchomp. All of the random kids nearby insult Paul, but Ash is impressed with him and tries to compliment him, only to get rebuffed.

Paul's pokemon are injured, but Nurse Joy is busy with surgery, so Cynthia offers to heal them. Paul reveals at this point that he's traveled through the Hoenn, Johto, and Kanto, and while he didn't win any of their leagues, he did raise his Torterra from a Turtwig and caught Murkrow and Weavile. However, he’s angry with Chimchar for losing so quickly, even though Murkrow lost just as quickly and simply happened to be the pokemon Garchomp used giga impact on. Chimchar could have just as easily been that pokemon, if Cynthia had felt like it. This is like getting angry with a completely random pawn in Chess because your enemy had his bishop capture it instead of capturing a different completely random pawn.

Ash and Paul get into an argument about whether the trainer winning or the trainer and his pokemon winning is more important, and Paul calls Chimchar "a spoiled pokemon that doesn't try hard enough." Cynthia hears their argument about the best way to get strong, and takes them to the ruins she was investigating earlier.

There are words written in Unown letters (okay that’s actually clever) on one of the ruins. "When every life meets another life, something will be born." She tells everyone that each pokemon has a unique personality, and that because of their meeting today "something powerful has been placed in each of us." She goes on to tell the heroes she hopes one day to meet Dialga and Palkia. Her ultimate dream is to "travel back to the source and find the timeless origin of all pokemon." Brock and Dawn breathlessly say that it would be amazing to meet Dialga and Palkia even though they literally met them like yesterday. I mean, seriously, I checked. Rise of Darkrai is chronologically before this episode. You could take the opportunity to tell Cynthia that they love staring contests, destroying small towns, CGI lightning backgrounds, and B-grade leaf whistling.

Team Rocket steals Chimchar from the pokemon center and run by the heroes and escape into their balloon. Ash is about to use Staravia when Paul simply has his Ursaring hyper beam the balloon, and Chimchar jumps down just before it hits, hurting itself on the ground. Paul curses Chimchar for getting captured by losers like Team Rocket, but at Cynthia's urging, Paul agrees to stay at the pokemon center for the night.

Cut to the pokemon center, where the heroes and Cynthia watch a newscast from Celestic Town. The Lustrous Orb has been found, an artifact that increases the power of Palkia and which is related to the Adamant Orb from earlier. Cynthia departs for Celestic Town, telling Ash that he’ll “get stronger in your own way,” which could be easily interpreted to mean that she knows he’ll never be the very best, like no one ever was.

Okay, guys. I’m just going to say it. I don’t really like Paul. I’m sorry. I know you guys all love him, and that’s fine. But come on. He’s a jerk to Ash simply because he’s a jerk. Not even because Ash is an inferior trainer, or because Ash is a douchey idiot, but because he’s just a mean guy. At least with Gary acting like a jerk, there was the entire “we’ve known each other since we were little kids” thing.

And then you have Paul cursing out Chimchar for losing even though he literally put Chimchar in the most ridiculous circumstance possible. It is literally like if Board 8 chose me to play a game of Starcraft 2 against one of those crazy ridiculous Korean players, and I lost in five minutes, and then Board 8 chose someone else, and he also lost in five minutes, but instead, the Korean player happened to kill him with Hyrdralisks instead of Zerglings. I don’t mind characters criticizing other characters for legitimate faults, but Paul is just and unreasonable douchebag.

A good antagonist to Ash, who isn't exactly the most mature and smart character in the show or in anime in general, I don't think you can praise Paul for being a good antagonist to Ash when all it would take to make Paul look like a fool himself is not picking up his puerile provocations.

I just realized her Golurk was shiny. I thought something looked off about it yesterday, but pushed it out of my mind. And why do they keep pronouncing macaroons wrong?

I actually looked it up, it IS pronounced the way they said it. It still sounds wrong though...

... But when I looked it up earlier... nevermind. Maybe that's the original French (or whatever country of origin macaroons are from) pronunciation, but to my American ears that pronunciation is an affront!

They spent the whole movie acting like reporters and palling around with Alberto.
It has been quite some time since they've been relevant to the plot of a movie in the slightest.

I didn't include them because they didn't affect the plot in any way and I couldn't find any good frames to take out of context and make a joke about. Literally their biggest contribution was telling Alberto that he was a Lickilicky now.

Team Rocket has been reduced to more cameo appearances in the movies. It's been a long drop from helping to save the world in movie 2 to what they have been doing.

Given B/W's development in removing Team Rocket from many episodes, were they in the Zekrom movie at all?
