I do not consider Ace Attorney games as visual novels. Then again, I have never read a visual novel
I guess it comes with having read a bunch of them. Visual novels very often incorporate elements from other genres; Symphonic Rain's part music game that has you using your entire friggin' keyboard, Utawarerumono's like a simplified and more forgiving Fire Emblem, Eien no Aselia has kinda unique squad-based RPG warfare (well, I've never seen a game use that kind of role-centric gameplay). And every single one of these is considered primarily a visual novel, despite having waaaay more gameplay than Phoenix Wright.
