If you wanted to make a movie to expose every trope ever, this is the movie.

Literally the only cool thing in this entire movie is an ad for the Xbox 720.

Anagram has been to every robot boxing movie premiere since the early eighties.

Why would he stop now that they've (seemingly) perfected the craft with REAL STEEL?

lol caring about tropes of all things in movies.

People need to realize that:

A) everything follows tropes
B) tropes are generally good story telling elements.

I mean yes, tropes can be used poorly but still, they are usually there for a reason.

Seriously, if you were sitting next me and said "that's totally a trope" while watching a movie, I would deck you.

I enjoyed Real Steel, ha it is true though it's practically a remake of Over The Top, only instead of Stallone on the road arm wrestling with a kid along its Hugh Jackman robot boxing with a kid along. Very 80s.

Still, Jackman's deadbeat guy on the road looking for some cash worked, the fights were fun, overall I dug it.

I have an excuse this time. My dad desperately wanted to see a movie with me for some reason, and between the two of us, we'd seen every movie out except Real Steel and Dolphin Tale.

I think this should have been the movie's tagline

Man, it's really like if they advertise a movie everywhere, dumb people will see it, regardless of how terrible it is.

There's a difference between using tropes (which is inevitable) and using tropes egregiously. I assume what Anagram is referring to here is a situation where every single predictable plot point and cliché was used for the sake of not having to take a single creative step with writing, write down to the most basic tropes that these days are lampshaded more often than played seriously, ex. someone saying this is their last day/they're retiring then being killed or defeated or something.

Pre-emptive note for mods-The above is not a spoiler. I have not seen the movie, nor do I know anything about the plot beyond it being about robot boxing. I am simply using that trope as an example.

A trope does not necessarily equal a cliche, yeah. Trope just happens to be the modern shorthand for something that commonly happens in a story. They can be cliches, sure, but they can also not be depending on the writing.

It's actually not even that modern! The word is way way older, from the early 20th century. Totally blew my mind when I opened a textbook a couple months ago and saw it there.
