Yeah, I've been always meaning to do one of these.
You know the rules by now: *Release fainted Pokemon *Only catch the first Pokemon from each area (no duplicates). *Can only buy Pokeballs, TMs, and Evolution stones (although other items found lying on the ground can still be used). *Always battle in Set mode.
So I start out, get my first Pokemon, ShellYeah! the Squirtle, and defeat my rival. (...now I remember, his name is Hitler!)
I branch out to the routes surrounding Viridian, and catch Biter the Rattata, Poopflingr the Mankey, and Bird Flu the Pidgey. A poor Kakuna also meets a gruesome end at the hands of a crit on one of ShellYeah!'s tackles. :(
Now awaits the unholy nest of evil known as Viridian Forest.
Sweet. That reminds me; I need to restart that Nuzlocke of Yellow that just erased itself for no apparent reason.
...wait a second, the list of people who signed up to have Pokémon named after them is saved to the hard drive of that computer that's not working yet again.
Well, regardless, tagging this.
-- (this space for rent...okay, not really.) [NO BARKLEY NO PEACE]
Viridian Forest was a real pain, I had to keep using valuable potions to keep poisoned Pokemon alive long enough to get to the Pokemon Center.
Doubled back to fight Hitler on route 22 for exp, but his damn Pidgey scored 3 critical hits and forced me to use yet another of my limited potions. arrrg!
After that, I went back to Pewter and entered the gym. Four uses of Water Gun later, I had the boulderbadge.
Went through Mt. Moon with little difficultly, though I did have to use one of my two antidotes to save Poopflingr from poisoning. Continued to Cerulean, picking up SNAAAAKE!! the Ekans along the way. Fought Hitler again, using up another one of my potions. Only one of them left now. :\
I headed north of Cerulean across nugget bridge to get a new Pokemon. I walk into the nearby grass, and of course, the first thing I encounter is an Abra. I futilely chuck a pokeball at it as it teleports away. so much for my Oddish to use against Misty. After clearing out the route, I head back to face to face our favorite water-pokemon master. Thankfully, Misty wastes her super potion on her Staryu, and ShellYeah! is able to defeat her scary Starmie rather easily with Bite.
Now that the path is opened up, I can access the treasure trove of new pokemon in the areas around Vermilion. I catch Veggie the Oddish, NyanNyan the Meowth, Magikrap the Magikarp, and UglyAsHell the Drowzee. But the big attraction here is he nearby cave, where there there is 100% chance of encountering the Diglett line. I head inside and catch Wackamole the Diglett, and give him the spot on my team I had been reserving for him.
Btw, does anyone know if you can get Crobat pre-national dex in FireRed? If not, I may drop Golbat for my new Oddish.
Alright I couldn't finish typing that with a straight face, but Drowzee is awesome! At least my shiny Drowzee which is now a shiny Hypno was awesome. >_>
I found out that it is indeed the case, so I benched Batarang in favor of Veggie. I head to the S.S. Anne and mow down everyone inside, including Hitler again, who can't seem to take a hint. I receive HM Cut and then take a detour to get HM Flash and head back and battle the trainers east of Cerulean for exp. While there I acquire Bomb Squad the Voltorb.I head back to Vermilion and enter the third gym.
Hey there Mr. Serge.. That's a nice... Gym.. you've got there...
..would be a shame if.. something... happened to it...
With my third badge in hand, I head onward to the rock tunnel!
I head through Rock Tunnel, Picking up Hulk Hogan the Machop on the way. I then proceed to Celedon City, clearing out all the trainers along the way. I accidentally knock out a Growlithe on Route 8 with a crit, but get a second chance on Route 7, where I catch Puppy the Growlithe. I pick up Thunderfox the Eevee from Celedon building, and head over to Route 16 to get HM Fly and catch Chocobo the Doduo. I then go to Celedon dept store to get elemental stones for my pokemon, and to sell enough items to get me to 80,000 pokedollers. With the money in hand, I head to the Game Corner and buy 4000 coins, which I trade in for the Flamethrower TM, and promptly teach it to Puppy. I make some major changes to my party, and now It's time to face Erika.
Not much to say about the gym battle other than 'Puppy used Flamethrower'. The Rocket base was much without incident other than a scary critical hit on Puppy from Giovanni's Kangaskahn that left him with 5 HP. I then proceeded to the Pokemon Tower, catching Skeletor the Cubone. Unfortunately, in keeping with the grim theme of pokemon tower, I have suffered my first loss. Chocobo the Doduo was cut down in his prime only one level away from evolution by a critical hit from a Headbutt delivered by the ghost of Cubone's Mother. I withdraw the much inferior Bird Flu and continue onward.
I spent most of my time wandering the new routes defeating all the trainers while I try to decide which gym leader is more dangerous - Sabrina and her hard-hitting Alakazam, or Koga and his Exploding Weezing. I went down Bike Road, and the first thing I meet is a new Doduo. Chocobo has risen again! Phoenix the Doduo has joined the party!
...and Phoenix has left the party, permanently, after being hit and killed by a Pursuit from a wild Fearow as I was trying to switch her out while training. ..oh well, Bird Flu, looks like you're up again. I head to the Safari Zone and catch Horny Ry the Rhyhorn. A shame I didn't get another Doduo, I would have named it 'Flying Man' (you're awesome if you get this reference). I then exit the city to the east and pick up Tribble the Venonat. I then proceed to clear out the rest of the trainers on the route, after which I Fly back to Saffron to do the Silph building.
After buying Thunderbolt for Thunderfox at the game corner, I head into the Silph building. After many detours to heal a Pokemon everytime it got poisoned (damn you Rockets and your poison types), and acquiring Nessie the Lapras, I met up with Hitler again. I faced no resistance until I got to Hitler's Alakazam. Puppy was at 50% HP and poisoned, so I switched in ShellYeah!. 'Zam used Calm Mind in the switch in. Ut-oh! Alakazam used Future Sight, while I used a Surf that took off 30% of his health. I could try Strength instead, but if Alakazam used Reflect or Recover, it wouldn't be nearly enough. Plus ShellYeah! was not at full health, and I most certainly did not want him to be hit with the +1 Future Sight hitting two turns from now. I switch to Bird Flu, and Hitler tries using Future Sight again (lol stupid AI). Bird Flu miraculously outspeeds 'Zam and kills him with Secret Power. Giovanni does not pose any resistance, so... Master Ball Get! I clear out the Fighting dojo and the lesser trainers from Koga's and Sabrina's Gyms. Now it's time to face one of the leaders. Probably Koga, as I found out his Weezing can't explode in this version, just his Koffings.
First up, Koga. His Koffings both died in one hit and thankfully never got a chance to explode, however his horrible Muk pulled evasion hax in the battle. Thankfully I had two auto-hit moves (Thunderfox's Shock Wave and Poopflingr's Aerial Ace), but still, it was slow going having to kill Muk three times over due to Koga's potions. I had to use three potions of my own to survive, potions I'm sure to miss when I get to the elite four. :(
My team's condition after the battle:
I drop Poopflingr and Veggie for sacrificial pokemon from my box. Next up, Sabrina. She was surprisingly easier then Koga, which considering all the things that can go wrong during this fight (the chief of which is the possibility of her Mr. Mime baton passing a Barrier or a Calm Mind to her Alakazam). ShellYeah! defeated Sabrina's first two pokemon in two hits with Strength (both of them wasted their only turn Calm Minding), and then on her third pokemon, Venomoth, I sent in SNAAAAKE!! to die to allow Bird Flu to come in and face Venomoth and the subsequent Alakazam with full health. Venomoth dies to one Fly, and Bird Flu barely survives a hit from Alakazam's Psychic to counter with a one hit KO with Return. Sabrina, destroyer of Nuzlocke runs, has been felled!
...now a moment of silence for the valiant Ekans, who, without his brave sacrifice, this would not be possible.
Water, water everywhere! I uneventfully clear out the many trainers in the sea routes and pick up Medusa the Tangla, Squishy the Tentacool, Kissyface the Horsea, and Escargot the Omanyte.
After clearing Pokemon Mansion (where a nice Weezing explodes before I can catch it), I enter Cinnabar Gym, which is a joke with a Blastoise. I then get sent on the remake-exclusive number island quest, where I pick up Donald the Psyduck, Dreamcast the Poliwhirl, and Salmon the Seaking. A crit ends the life of a Ponyta as I'm trying to catch it, though.
After turning Giovanni's pitiful gym into a swimming pool with ShellYeah!, I head west towards Victory Road. I meet Hitler again, and his Calm Mind Alakazam is as scary as always, but fortunately, thanks to paralysis and Hitler choosing to use stupid s*** like Disable, he never got a hit on me. I continue on my way and catch Repiv the Ekans and BrockObama the Onix.
It was slow going having to return to Viridian every time I needed to heal (and thus having to do the rock puzzles all over again), but eventually I made it to the Indigo Plateau. I have two things I have left to do before I challenge the Elite Four: One, find out if the optional areas that I skipped (Seafoam Islands, Power Plant) have any healing items lying around, and Two, get all my Pokemon levels into the mid fifties.
Went to the Power Plant to pick up the valuable Max Potion, and caught F'nMagnets the Magneton while there. The rest of my time was spent leveling up my Pokemon, so not much else to report.
I finish training all my Pokemon to level 55, and head to Game Corner to buy Ice Beam for ShellYeah!, and a Charcoal, Mystic Water, and Miracle Seed. Time3 for the Pokemon League! Wish me luck.
Lorelei was dispatched with ease thanks to her team having such a huge weakness to electric, but Bruno was more of a pain. Has scary Machamp thankfully never used Bulk Up, but he still took a long time to take down. I had to use 2 Hyper Potions and 2 Max Potions during and after the fight. Two down, three to go!
Thunderfox continues to be my MVP as he solos all of Agatha's Pokemon but one. On Lance he knocks out Gyarados before I switch to ShellYeah! to Ice Beam Lance's precious dragons to death. ...but I have to use four potions over the course of beating the two of them, which leaves me with only two remaining for Hitler.
The (sort of) final battle! First up, Thunderfox fries Pidgeot. Hitler then sends out Rhydon which is destroyed by Veggie's Giga Drain. Next up it's the big boy, Alakazam. Now comes the problem. Veggie of course, can't stay in, but switching any Pokemon into a potential Psychic, a critical of which would kill any member of my team instantly. So, I make the hard choice and switch in Poopflingr, who is by far the least valuable member of my team. Now, thanks to Hitler's utterly moronic battle strategy, Poopflingr nearly defeated a f***ing ALAKAZAM. His entire strategy was to constantly use Future Sight, which failed half the time cause he already had one active. It took like 8 turns and two Full Restores on 'Zam before he finally finished off Poopflingr with a Psychic. I then send in Bird Flu to finish him off. Geez, if I knew he'd be that dumb I would have just sent out Bird Flu to start with. Could have perfected the whole damn Pokemon League. His remaining three Pokemon all had poor matchups with one of my team members, and were dispatched easily. Hall of Fame get! Now onto the post-game content! As getting the National dex and the new area that go along with it requires 60 pokemon in your pokedex to access (which I am FAR short of), I will catch and immediately release afterward enough pokemon to reach the quota. First up, though, I need a new team member to replace Poopflingr. Though I'm tempted to go with BrockObama due to his raw levels, Onix is a s*** pokemon. I instead withdraw Horny Ry and teach him Earthquake.
I catch around 15 new pokemon to get the National Dex (and the Exp Share), but the only one I'm allowed to keep is Club Me the Seel. With the new Dex in hand I run about the new islands that were unlocked, receiving an egg that hatches into Eggcellent the Togepi, and also catching Mrs. Boo the Gastly, Tanuki the Sentret, and Babar the Phanpy.
TsunamiXXVIII posted... You actually could've gotten 15 just from evolving all of your existing Pokémon...
I needed more like 18-19. Among the 15 I caught were a Weedle and Caterpie, which I evolved. Trust me, I already did the math and I'd still be several short.
I found the gems, kicked Team Rocket's ass for good, and caught Buzzy the Kakuna, Heraderp the Wooper and Miss Piggy the Swinub. Only things left to do are Cerulean Cave (which sadly, I do not have enough repels to make it to Mewtwo without likely running into something new), and the Elite Four Rematch (who pack pokemon in the high sixties to low seventies).

Oh, right, not allowed to just buy repels. Yeah, getting legendaries in a Nuzlocke run is kind of tough; only one that I'd even consider making an attempt at would be...well, it would depend on the version; in RBY, Zapdos would probably be easier just because fewer repels needed to get through, but in its new location for FR/LG, Moltres would probably be the easiest to get, and since its AI always has it use Endure on the first turn of the battle, a sufficiently powerful Electric-type (preferably with Thunder Wave as well in case the Thunderbolt/Thunder doesn't paralyze--normally I'd use Thunder but since you have no margin for error in Nuzlocke I'd want one strong enough to do it with Thunderbolt) can put it in perfect capturing range without worrying about killing it. (Or if you want to use multiple Pokémon, have a Rock-type do 4x damage and then use a sleep-inducing Pokémon, since sleep, while not permanent, increases the chances more than paralysis does.)
...Of course since you're probably not going after any other legendaries, you might as well use a Master Ball on any that you do go after.
You know what? I'm starting to wonder which legendary Pokémon would be reasonably viable to go after in a Nuzlocke run. The first-gen games and their remakes don't really have any. The second-gen games...not really sure. IIRC the trek to Lugia isn't that long. Third-gen, the box legendary is definitely viable; you probably only need a single Repel to get to the back of the Cave of Origin without running into a Pokémon. Depending on what your definition of an "area" is, the three golems are encountered in caves that don't have wild Pokémon, so they're also a possibility (and even if the caves are considered part of the routes they're found on, Regice is still a possibility because the only time you actually have to travel on Route 105, you're on Mr. Briny's boat. Fourth Gen...Regigigas is in a short dungeon, but it can only be obtained by having the other three Golems, which aren't even available in the game without transferring them through Pal Park, so that's a no-go. The existence of the Distortion World makes Platinum!Giratina not only a possibility, but something that doesn't even require Repel. And while Rotom isn't actually a legendary, it definitely doesn't need too much work--though in Diamond/Pearl, it's not available until you get the National Dex, so it's not as viable. Fifth generation actually forces you to capture your box legendary, but luckily for Nuzlockers, it is indeed found in a location with no other Pokémon. Landorus is another one from the Regigigas category--getting to it without running into something else is easy enough, but you'd need to trade with another player before you'd be able to encounter it. (And of course, almost every event legendary is like this--Darkrai, Shaymin, Victini.)

Actually, I could have probably gotten Moltres or Zapdos if I had wanted one of them, but the birds have too many bad weaknesses to be optimal for a nuzlocke run.
barreldragon88 posted... Karo, did you just not bother with getting Hitmonchan/Hitmonlee?
And I must say your movesets could uses some improvements...
The Hitmons are in the same area as Lapras.
Not sure what you mean about the movesets, they are pretty much optimized to the limit that the game allows me at that point in time. Perhaps the great poke-guru could enlighten me?
I went into Cerulean Cave and caught Shroom! the Parasect, but there was an unspeakable horror lurking in the shadows. I encountered the Prince of Darkness, Wobbuffet, and lost Veggie to his terrifying counterattacks. ...and the worst thing is, I still need to go back into Cerulean Cave to get the two Full Restores down there.. (I only have three potions at the moment)
