What are your thoughts on that matchup? Freeman has beaten Phoenix before, but think he has a chance at redemption with Edgeworth?

Phoenix is a night match, which favors him considerably. While Gordon is stronger in a direct match, according to the 2k10 x-stats, I think this being a "rivalry" contest is going to put the match in Phoenix's favor, since Edgeworth is a beloved rival from the series.

Do we really think Breen would do any better?

I mean, do we think he would do better than Alyx Vance, who got tripled by Lara Croft?

I'm taking Phoenix/Edgey. They'll probably get a decent boost from the rivalry factor, it's a night match, Breen is probably turbofodder, and one-seeds always receive a good deal of bracket votes. Just look at how Super Mario Galaxy over-performed against Twilight Princess in the last contest!

...I wouldn't.

Besides, it's not like Gordon blew Phoenix out before. It was a 58/42 match (and 56/44 at noon, for the record, since that's when this match will end). Factor in the potential that people will factor in the rivalry itself, and the fact that it doesn't seem like people hold Freeman/Breen in high regard (Didn't do much better than Raynor/Kerrigan), and Phoenix has a chance.

Half-Life is a good deal stronger than Ace Attorney, true.

However, Gordon Freeman isn't a lot stronger than Phoenix Wright.

See, I think the big thing is that nobody cares about Edgeworth. Freeman/Breen isn't going to be weaker than Freeman, but Edgeworth needs to boost Phoenix in order to win. I mean, I'd love for Phoenix/Edgeworth to win, but I don't see Phoenix/Edgeworth boosting much from the rivalry factor because it's very clear that Phoenix is way stronger than the games already, so there's very little room to rise, especially from a character that this site doesn't care about.

I don't think there's a whole lot of boost needed from adding Edgeworth to the equation for them to win that match though, especially in a 12-hour night match.

In a 24 hour match, I wouldn't even consider it, but 12 hours? I think there's a chance.

Honestly, it's like Snake/Mega Man to me. Is Snake going to slaughter Mega Man? No, but at the same time Mega Man isn't a threat. Edgeworth needs to probably make up a good 5-6%, and I don't think there's enough room left for Phoenix to boost above the games for Edgeworth to make that up with how not-popular the games are.

Well, that won't matter as much considering he'll be paired with Gordon.

But I'm not convinced that this contest is just "Pick which character of the four is the strongest" straight up. Gordon is probably the favorite, but I don't think it's a lock.

Rivalry affecting the match requires people to care about at the very least, the game. This site doesn't care about Phoenix Wright games. Phoenix Wright the character is already far stronger than the games. This isn't like Red/Blue where it's an 'iconic rivalry' from maybe the third strongest game on this site where the more popular half got what, 40% on a near-elite and has room to grow. Phoenix has virtually no room to grow by 'rivalry factor', and grow he needs to do just to make this close enough to have a shot.

UMvC3 would only give boost to the "He's the only guy I know so I vote for him" factor.

The only people who are excited about PW being in that game are the ones who already know him and thus would've voted for him anyways.

Whether you agree with the finalists or not, that doesn't change the fact that these are popularity contests. However, popularity and "smart voter faqs" aren't mutually exclusive. There were plenty of posters last year that genuinely felt Zelda: Majora's Mask was the best game of the decade.

Similarly, there will be some voters who honestly feel that the Phoenix/Edgeworth rivalry is more interesting/awesome/iconic than a Freeman/Breen rivalry (and vice versa). But considering it's been stated more than once that Breen isn't really a great rival for Freeman, it gives Phoenix/Edgeworth an edge for those who are legitimately going to vote for "best rival pair."

I don't know if it will really make a difference, but it's one of several circumstances working in their favor.

And Gordon is far weaker than the HL games.

Considering the direct power between the two characters, Phoenix doesn't need a significant power leap, he just needs to watch Breen pull Gordon down into the dirt while the night vote lets him coast to a close win.

Eh, I dunno. PW1 did decently enough on MKWii (I know, I know, LOL Wii) to make me think people at least care about the first game somewhat.

But in two night matches, Phoenix has managed 47.3% on Jecht (and I don't think Gordon is much better than Jecht, honestly) and 46.5% on MKWii.

And do we think Phoenix loses to Raynor or Kerrigan, just so we're clear?

I feel like Phoenix Wright, at the moment, has more momentum going into this contest. He's about to be a playable character in MvC, and that's generating at least a little bit of buzz. Half-Life 2 ep3, meanwhile, seems to have completely disappeared off the face of the earth, and there is zero hype over it at the moment whatsoever because we haven't heard anything. Gordon Freeman may never have less momentum than he's got now.

Also I just feel like Phoenix/Edgeworth just looks better at a glance. They're more recognizable as a duo even if people don't really know them, whereas I think even a lot of players who played HL would have to stop and think a moment about Dr. Breen, and in a poll like this where people aren't going to think about their votes too closely I think that actually helps. This is a factor in a lot of other matches too that I think matters more than people think it does.

Somewhere in the back of my head I feel like I'm trying to justify a wrong pick though. My gut says Phoenix/Edgeworth pull out a close in spite of the evidence, but I really don't like it.
