Ha, I'm glad we've gotten to the timeskip, but c'mon folks One Piece is way too classy for a suffix. Plus, in 20 years One Piece is gonna be so legendary, referencing DBZ in comparison would be like "whats that DBZ thing?" =P

Also, it's really funny and awesome that Sanji's hair covering his eye switched sides.

I don't feel a need to differentiate it, since it's the same show. 2 years isn't really that crazy of a timeskip, I mean it's epic and cool but ah... ha yeah it's One Piece. Not One Piece X: The Mighty Pirate Lords of Space and Time (sounds good though)

You could say the same thing about DBZ, saying it won't have the impact that Astro Boy did. And you'd be right, in a sense, I guess you could say anything older is more important simply because it's older, and everything influences everything that comes after.

But on the other hand, if One Piece ends up being twice as long as the Dragonball saga (and it might), in the longterm of history it's really not out of the question that it'll be more notable than DBZ. And hey, we've already got Fairy Tale.

On a serious note (not that people's inability to use decimate correctly isn't serious) One Piece's popularity is pretty much entirely dependent on Japan. Its manga sales are so huge because it dominates in Japan, but nowhere else, and Japan's manga sales are many times that of other countries. If we go by raw sales, then One Piece is more popular than Dragonball.

But it massively lacks the cultural impact, especially on a worldwide scale. One Piece is comparatively non-existant outside of Japan, while Dragonball actually wound up more popular elsewhere (though not represented in manga sales because lol-non Japanese manga sales). It's possible One Piece might be more fondly remembered in Japan (though I doubt that too, in spite of commercial success) than Dragonball, but as far as the whole world is concerned, One Piece is nothing compared Dragonball.

Japan also makes up the majority of sales for both series compared to worldwide sales. OP is probably going to be legendary in Japan, but not outside of it. It just doesn't have the popularity everywhere else to overtake DB/Z. If any series going on right now is going to do that in North America it's looking like Naruto.

The time skip doesn't change much other than upping the power of the crew. Right now we haven't gotten out of the beginning of the post-skip to fully digest the consequences.

Anime isn't entirely dead in America. About half or more of the anime on tv are reruns though. CN's adult swim block is about the only one picking up new titles on a somewhat regular basis.
