their statement categorizes the behavior as excessive and states that other passengers had a problem first - this girl has also bragged that she has video of the incident (though it's probably only of the airline staff telling them to leave), so I wouldn't be so quick to jump down SW's throat here until video comes out

Initial reports indicate that we received several passenger complaints characterizing the behavior as excessive. Our crew, responsible for the comfort of all Customers on board, approached the passengers based solely on behavior and not gender. The conversation escalated to a level that was better resolved on the ground, as opposed to in flight. We regret any circumstance where a passenger does not have a positive experience on Southwest and we are ready to work directly with the passengers involved to offer our heartfelt apologies for falling short of their expectations.

"Being gay" is not the same as "eating your lover's face out in front of little children." We need more info, but based on the above, I'd side with Southwest. If a straight couple had received similar complaints for similar exhibitionism, the result would've been identical.

Yeah, I agree. Additional information would really change things, but so far it's not looking too good for the airline.

I don't see why two people of whatever gender have the right to make out on an airplane with a captive audience. It's gross. Totally on Southwest's side here.

Initially when I saw this the other day I was appalled.
Then I realised maybe they were eating each other's faces off or something.
But then I thought, if a straight couple was doing the same thing they wouldn't have been thrown off the plane. Also people, while maybe being annoyed or grossed out, probably would have just ignored it. And I thought SW's statement was kind of douchey.

But yeah. Additional info needed before I decide to never ride Southwest again.

Based on the statement, it seems they were not kicked off the plane even for eating each other's faces off, but for creating a huge scene when asked to stop.

And really? You'd stop flying Southwest because of a single instance? I've never understood this sentiment (especially in a case like this, where the evidence is at best inconclusive).

Not true.

While people might disagree on what 'excessive' means, they should all agree that excessive warrants being kicked off.

Regardless of whether the kiss was a light peck or a heavy tongue massage, I'm sure what ended up happening was that the flight attendant came over and asked them to stop, and then one of the chicks went on a typical Gay Pride Crusade™ that made things go from bad to much, much worse.

There is. But there's also a time and a place to go to battle. From the sound of it, and by the way she's acting now, they were probably asked to stop and she went bat-s*** crazy on them. Asking them to stop if it wasn't actually excessive isn't fair, yeah... But they got kicked off for their reaction, not the PDA.

gotta remember that SW may have been stuck with two bad options - tell the two to stop kissing and make them angry, or not tell the to and have a bunch of passengers be angry - if this gets bad publicity then this may have been the wrong choice, but it doesn't even necessarily mean that the airline staff is homophobic

Also boycotting an airline because of this is just silly, it's an isolated incident that's likely going to be skewed my the media (such as incredibly biased articles like this).

Businesses typically don't have a reason to initiate conflict unless they absolutely have to, i.e. when multiple customers complain. People who are gay, however, tend to make every small conflict a massive battle for the Stake on Gay Freedom and Independence™.

So yeah, I'm actually going to trust Southwest more on this one. But again, more information etc. etc.

Yeah, because the passengers totally would have complained if it had been a heterosexual couple. And if they had, the heterosexual couple would totally have been kicked off the plane rather than being politely asked to stop or tone it down.

The girls were definitely kissing in a confined, public space, people definitely complained, and I'm sure the girl(s) went way overboard in how they handled it. A big part of this issue is whether or not the complaints were warranted, but even if the answer is "no," this whole thing could've been resolved without much trouble if the girl(s) in question hadn't felt crucified.

They WERE asked to stop. The actress said this herself. She also said they got kicked off for getting upset OVER being asked to stop, and not the kissing itself.
