I was in the 4th grade and they made everyone go outside for surprise recess. Some kid heard that "a bunch of arabs hi-jacked a plane" and none of us could understand why that was enough of a reason for us to have recess at 9 in the morning. We came back inside and our teacher was crying while she explained what happened. I don't think any of us really understood until later though.

Congratulations, LMS. In a topic where Liquid Wind said that women shouldn't be allowed to vote, you are still the worst poster in this topic. - kevwaffles
In the hallway at school. A friend of my gf stopped me and told me between classes. Next period was media lab, so we grabbed a TV and watched the news for an hour, while the rest of the school was barred from showing the news. Watched the first tower fall live. :(

6th grade, if I recall we didn't find out until after the first two planes had hit (though maybe it had been only one, I can't quite remember now), but were watching the TV when each tower fell, when the news came about the Pentagon and the other flight, etc

11th grade History class. We heard about the news but there wasn't a TV in the room, so the whole class walked over to the Art room where there was a TV and we just watched the news for awhile.

I got up and listened to Mancow like I always did. They were screaming about towers being hit. I figured it was fake because they always do fake skits but they insisted it was real and to turn on the news. So I put on Fox News and saw that it was real!
It was a late arrival day so school didn't start until 10:00. It was an interesting day.
Fourth grade classroom, sitting in the back, when my teacher's phone rang, and she just said "ok" then ran to her computer. She read or looked at something, put her hand over her mouth, and told us we were going to take a short break from teaching and to stay quiet. She stayed at her computer for a bit doing stuff, we were all oblivious.
I was at lunch, barely a week into middle school. A kid told everyone at our table that planes had crashed into the WTC, but nobody believed him because he was known for making up ridiculous stories. Then the principal announced to everybody what had happened in detail.

We all were going on a field trip to the National History Museum in DC (since that's the only place we ever go to field trips on for some reason) so we were sitting in the bus in front of the school. And we were just sitting there for like an hour wondering why we weren't leaving... and then the teachers came and took us back inside and we all went back to our classes and watched the news on the TVs. Then we were sent home early and I went to my friends house and watched the news more/played video games.
We lived like 15 minutes away from the Pentagon, but for some reason I never learned that the Pentagon got hit until a couple of days later... they were always just talking about the WTC.

Also since my dad is Pakistani, we had a few FBI dudes come to our house a couple of months later to talk to him (it's not racial profiling because I seriously wouldn't be surprised if he was involved) and that was pretty cool.

but yeah, fifth grade classroom. Assistant principal came in the room and told my teacher, who in turn told us that one of the WTC towers had been knocked down. I remember my first thought was, "What the heck is the WTC?"
I remember going home and just watching the news, not really comprehending the magnitude of what happen, but couldn't turn away from it anyway.
Fifth grade Social Studies I believe. The first tower had been hit, and we got to watch the second one get hit. Oddly, I don't seem to recall watching either one fall, so... ?
Every class had a tiny television in the upper corner, but we had a larger one wheeled in so we could watched the news for the duration of the class and for the next class as well.
English class...it came as an announcement over the PA...I thought it was another carbomb. Once I made my way to the library to supposedly do work on a homework assignment, the TV was on there and it revealed what happened.
