Super Metroid is one of those games for me, I guess.

I didn't hate it, but I got so tired of advancing for a little while, spending 30 minutes trying to figure out how to open the way to the next area, advancing for a little while, etc. etc. etc.

It was fun when stuff was going on, but too much running back and forth trying to figure out what the heck to do.

I can't believe so many people drop so many games. I guess I'm just weird. I never drop a game unless the controls are absolute ****. Like I even forced myself through Tales of Destiny and Eternia with the help of cheat codes. That's how I go through a lot of the older RPGs that people rave about.

Granted, I don't drop as many games as some people around here. I generally have a good idea about games I'll like and games I won't.

Final Fantasy IV

I loved FFVI and FFV so much and thought "hey I should try the other 16-bit FF experience". Between FFIV and ToS2, the desire to play the JRPG has been purged from my soul.

I generally know what I'm getting into before I start too, but sometimes there are games in a series that I don't want to skip. So I just force my way through. I finished Star Ocean 3 before 1&2, there was no way I would skip the first two. Or like KH, I had to beat the first no matter how bad because it's a series I'm interested in.

Oh, this'll rile some people.

I gave up on Xenogears. I'd been playing the extra dungeons in the game, and I said, you know what, this is stupid. The plot points I cared about had already been resolved, and the whole deal with the second disc had worn me down to where I just didn't care about the ending. It marked the first (but not the last) Squaresoft / SquareEnix game I gave up on.

Then there was Chrono Cross. I reached the one boss. Yeah, that guy. If you've played it, you should know who I'm talking about. I didn't have enough elements (I think that's what they were called) to really hurt him, and even with the recharging stations one screen away there really wasn't anything I could do to win. So I gave up.

The last one I can think of off the top of my head is Final Fantasy X, although I'm cheating a bit since I did try going back to it once. This game just bored the hell out of me. I simply didn't care about the setting, the plot, or the characters. I forget where I stopped the first time, but then a year or so later I came back, pressed on, made it to the Thunder Plains, and realized I still didn't care. Never bothered with it again.

People who think like this are stubborn. Hey, good job beating a video game you didn't like, that must've felt satisfying use of time, you sure showed, uh...yourself!

That's not it though.

Rather, since I'm not stupid, I don't buy bad games, so this entire problem is pretty much a non-issue for me.

Like I said, I occasionally mess up though. Star Fox Adventures got raving reviews. How did that happen anyway?

Epic Mickey. The camera was the final straw.

Indigo Prophecy: Oh hey, I need to do another terrible stealth section, before continuing a plot that is turning into a trainwreck. Sounds like a good time to never play this game again!

Super Street Fighter 4: AE's release. Loved the game, couldn't bring myself to pay $20 for what didn't even appear to be an improvement.

Are you perhaps a psychic, then? How do you know if a game's good or bad without actually playing it? Demos, reviews, previews, videos are one thing, but actually sitting down with the game and playing it for hours is another thing entirely.

When I was really young, I rented Ghostbusters for the NES. Family wasn't rich so I didn't get to buy many games, renting was how I played a lot of stuff.

But after fifteen minutes or so, I realized the game was a steaming pile, even as a little kid who would play damn near anything. I took it back that day. They didn't give me a refund, but I didn't care. It was that bad.
