Gorillaz is definitely along the right lines. The lowest opinion I've heard for them is probably 'they're alright, I suppose'.

Best post-Peter Gabriel-Genesis > Peter Gabriel-Genesis > rest of post-Peter Gabriel-Genesis is how I'd rank the Genesis eras. Genesis made their best stuff when Peter Gabriel had left, but Peter Gabriel-Genesis was more consistently good.

Yeah, if you're not a fan of 70s prog rock I can see why you would prefer post-Gabriel Genesis. Yes and Gentle Giant are other 70s prog rock bands that started making "simpler" music later in their careers.

Peter Gabriel Gensis is so amazing I can't rank it lower than post-Pete Genesis. I mean, you have Supper's Ready, Dancing With the Moonlit Knight, and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. Three VERY different styles, and yet each of them done flawlessly. What more could you ask for?

Just from people I've encountered, I'd like to throw out a few.
RHCP - I feel like they're either well liked or "meh not for me". I haven't heard much hate. Michael Jackson - Anyone who hates his music should be shot on sight. The Temptations - Whether you like the style of music or not, I don't think anyone actively hates them. The Flaming Lips - ??? Either people aren't familiar with them or they like them. The Black Keys - ???
