I want to read civil war but from what I hear that's a terrible starting point.
Where's a good place to start?

Or would it be better to just start reading individual comic series by themselves than get into comic events?

The comics guys are putting up a big "introduction to comics" topic on the 7th IIRC. It's gonna have a ton of writeups that will cover DC since that's rebooting soon, but I imagine you'll be able to get some really good advice on how to get started too. That's what I'm doing myself.

Uh, yeah - I'm no comics expert, but this seems logical. Comic events tend to have about 3000 characters, so if you start out with one of those you'll just end up being really confused, probably.

The thing is that several comics events reboot the universe, either a little or a lot - Crisis on Infinite Earths is the ultimate example of this, but there's several others. Since things can change a lot after a big Crossover Crisis, it makes no sense to start before a certain point unless you just want to read through absolutely everything about one group or one character.

A handful of DC events reboot the universe. The Marvel universe has never had a reboot.

Events aren't really a good place to start with comic books. Ever.

THAT SAID, I don't know what's going on with Marvel, so I can't help you there.

And yes, we're going to have a rather lengthy guide to help people get into DC comics via their relaunch, "The New 52" which technically starts this Wednesday (we're not posting it until the Wednesday after because only one book comes out this week, Justice League #1).

Here's a video.

The logical thing would be to start with individual series but that's on a regular case.

With me, I am particularly odd case when it comes to comics. While I never got into comics I've been fascinated with the marvelverse for a while so sometimes I find myself traversing for an hour or two on marvel wiki or other sites like it reading up on the story of marvel characters I'm interested in. So I wouldn't be too lost when it comes to a story. The reason I wanna start on a comic event is because I'm looking to get introduced to characters that I find interesting and will go and read their individual comics on them and such.

Essentially. I'm looking for a comic event that eases me into the entire Marvelverse. Is there one that even exists?

Unfortunately, no. There's never been any event books that Marvel has put out within the last 10 years that are very accessible. Civil War has the unfortunate side effect of being terrible.

As far as great Marvel books in general I would recommend?

Astonishing X-Men (Joss Whedon)
New X-Men (Grant Morrison)
Young Avengers (Allan Heinberg)
Nextwave (Warren Ellis)
Runaways (Brian K Vaughn, Joss Whedon)
Captain America (Ed Brubaker)

Those are some high quality fairly accessible books that I can speak from personal experience on.

Though again, I implore you to join us in the DC New 52 topic when it's posted!

Waiting eagerly for this. I had the bad fortune/poor judgment to start modern Marvel with Civil War, so it's no surprise I quickly lost interest in actively reading comics as a result.
The new DC reboot seems to be an excellent opportunity to leap in to a new universe that I've never really explored.

Definitely plenty worth coming out besides Batman him and related characters have a ton of good looking books in that lineup.

A little spoiler:

Batman - Must buy

Batman & Robin - Probably good

Batman: The Dark Knight - Crap

Detective Comics - Utter ****

And we'll have writeups for those and all other titles on that list!

Civil War was my first Marvel book, too.

No coincidence I only started reading Marvel on the same level as DC a little over a month ago.

Mark Millar is a hack.

X-Treme X-Men is a fun accessable good book to hop on, good for getting into X-Men.

Daredevil, well you could rock Frank Miller's great 80s run, etc.

Fantastic Four, Mark Waid's run is a nice hop-on point.

I recommend doing that, yep yep.

Oh, right. That. I don't know whether it didn't come to mind because it was more localized than DC's reboots, or if it was because I had successfully repressed it until you brought it up again.

Now would definitely be a great time to get into Batman. It looks like there's gonna be a few great Bat related books coming out in the relaunch with the main Batman title being a must buy. The creative team is A+. Plus you probably won't have to worry much about any of the past 5 years of Morrison crazyness. Of course, if you really like what you're reading you can go back to read that stuff. Batman is one of the series that isn't getting as heavy a retooling and most of the stuff from his past is gonna be canon and worth reading since a lot of it is good. But don't worry about that. For the sake of accessibility it probably won't be brought up much.

Unless it's Annihilation, but that's only if you want to get into Cosmic Marvel.

in terms of Marvel:

Read Frank Miller's Daredevil. Then you can jump into v2, which starts with a bleh Kevin Smith arc and then transitions into some awesome stories by Brian Michael Bendis, then Ed Brubaker.

Also read all of Brubaker's Captain America. Consistently very awesome, and does a great job of explaining backstory and everything.
