I noticed a user earlier on the board today get use the term wrong... once again as many people do in everyday life. Now I want to make sure I myself, have been using irony correctly, so please tell me if the way I use it in the following statement is correct.

John likes creating medicine to save peoples lives. After many years, the actual act of creating this medicine, killed John. John's death is ironic.

Is that right?

Most people who try to use irony tend to attempt verbal irony. Essentially that a phase has the opposite meaning of what it seems like it should have. When it comes to discussions on the internet, this is the most common kind of irony. A reasonable example would be this joke written by Isaac Asimov, paraphrased...

John walks into a bar and sees Mike drinking. John asks Mike how things are. Mike responds, "My wife just ran off with my best friend."
John says to Mike, " But Mike, I'm your best friend."
Mike replies, "Not anymore."

What about if an outdoor wedding was planned, but then had to be moved at the last minute (like a day or 2 notice) to an indoor venue due to a forecast of severe storms, but then on the actual day, instead storms as forecasted, the weather was perfect?

People also seem to confuse coincidence with irony.

Coincidence - Fire station catches fire

Irony - Firemen fail to put out the fire at the fire station

The problem with defining irony is that there are so many different types, and so many different interpretations of what those types mean, that everything becomes muddled. Even in this topic, there are plenty of definitions that don't quite hit the mark. Here's a correct one:

Irony is a situation or statement wherein the opposite effect of what was intended is produced.

So I'm not sure, for example, that firefighters failing to put out a fire at their HQ is a good example of irony.

True, I was having issues coming up with an ironic statement that related to the whole fire station on fire thing.

Point is, the fire station catching fire/burning down is coincidence. Generally, irony requires an action of some sort.

Also, Alanis Morisette has gone on record saying that the fact that none of the things in "Ironic" are ironic was deliberate. The whole thing was Ironic.

In creating a song about irony, she didn't mention anything ironic the whole time!

Oedipus is the classic case of irony, yeah. In trying to fight a prophesy, the prophesy is in fact fulfilled.

Another example from Pirates of the Caribbean: in killing Bloom's father as a way of avenging their curse, the pirates actually end up making the curse irreversible.
