I know the first Hero is Lyn and I remember I like the dumb Cavalier, "Sain" I think?
I have played a number of chapters, I don't remember how many. I definitely didn't come near the end if the game. Nor do I know how to take different paths or whatever, so I'm just going to play the game.
Feel free to tell me I did something wrong/bad/other, criticise my character selection and persuade me to use others and PLEASE tell me how to recruit characters.
Nor do I know how to take different paths or whatever, so I'm just going to play the game.
There really aren't very many (I think there are only two splits, for one chapter each). They don't affect very much, either. If you want, I (or somebody else) can post the requirements when it starts to become relevant, though just playing through and seeing which paths you get works fine too. Probably better, even.

"The courtroom is the garden of holy judgment. Those with lechery in their hearts should leave this sanctuary at once!" ~Franziska von Karma
I'm female and I'm born in September. My name is Cyndi.
I can't help but have been doomed to failure simply because of my conception and name.
Prologue: Girl from the Plains
I meet Lyn.
Oh. It's a tutorial level. K.
I play through it and get the weirdest feeling it was completely scripted. Level up! Moving on...
Chapter 1: Footsteps of Fate
Meet Sain and Kent, and more tutorial.
Sain makes a fool of himself missing, getting hit, etc. but the chapter continues nevertheless. Lyn levels up while poking the boss, and kills him in the Enemy Phase. Marvellous.
More tutorial. Kent levels up and gets speed, so he can double the enemies here... but he's still too weak to kill them. Sain levels up strength and not speed, because god fobid we should defy the stereotype, Lyn attacks the boss, Sain kills him increasing level again.
Lyn seizes and we win. Woo! Yadda yadda, mystic spirits, blah blah. New sword!
Chapter 3: Band of Mercenaries
Lyn's old friend on the Pegasus happens to be in these parts today. I wonder if she'll join my team?
More tutorial, get Will. My first Archer. Will and Florina do their thing and Sain crits the first Bandit. Florina takes care of the North, Kent gets 2 level ups. In his first 3 levels, he's now gained a total of 4 stats. 2 HP, Spd and Res. You're not ingratiating yourself Kent! Sain is matching you in speed and has 4 more strength. Come on dude.
Yeah pretty much the first 10 levels are all tutorial.
It stops scripting so much around... I think 6 or something. I haven't actually played the tutorial in years though so I'm not sure (since I've always just played Lyn Hard Mode as they don't have the tutorial).
Blah blah, protect Natalie. I send Sain and Kent to watch the door and Florina with Lyn and Will east wall. Dorcas get, Dorcas Crit. Yep, that feels scripted.
Sain crits an enemy that was dying anyway. Kent taking two hits to kill an enemy is getting tiresome, but he does eventually get a decent level up. All my level ups on this level are better. Dorcas and Lyn head south and take out the boss and his archer as I clear away the map. I get most of the enemies, but there are 4 left at the end of turn 7. Oh well.
Chapter 5: Beyond the borders
Incredibly straightforward chapter. I recruit Erk and Serra, I advance, I kill the dudes in my way. I level some units up.
Fun fact: Dorcas, despite only working for the bandits to try to earn money to help his wife, will not hesitate to kill her if you let him get close enough.

1) Do not go to the SerenesForest link. Yes, it's an excellent resource- for people who have already completed the game. It's chock full of plot and character-recruitment spoilers, and since you're lucky enough to begin the game mostly blind, the game will be a more enjoyable experience if you keep it that way.
2) Don't let the first ten chapters discourage you. They're just a quick tutorial.
-- ~Pinkie Pie is the best pony~ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBpfwpOPXNc&NR=1&feature=fvwp
Yeah, the tutorial more or less only happens each time you get a new character, so after the beginning of Chapter 7, there's only one forced action, and it can theoretically be avoided by some sort of trick, though I forget how. Then the real fun starts.

Ulti (in one of his Post-Contest Analyses): God of War turned a 5 hour deadlock into a total laugher Anagram: Oh God, Tidus and Yuna were involved?
I'm well aware of SerenesForest, but would prefer not to use it on a first playthrough for most things. I may use it to check average stats to see if any of characters are being screwed in anything, but for the most part, I'd rather just play the game.
On that note...
Chapter 6: Blood of Pride
About 9 units and 6 enemies. That appear 1 after another as you push buttons. Exciting.
Done.
--
More tomorrow, but maybe tonight as well. Who knows?
ngirl should be fine on Serenes as long as she only looks at recruitments, gaiden reqs, average stats and such. Everything is pretty clearly labeled on the site. Plus, FE7 doesn't really have any characters whose recruitment is a major plot twist.

"The U.S. should detonate all its nukes on its own soil."-Terran [Evil Republican] Play Der Langrisser.
Hey! Prep screen. This is a tough decision, I want all of my characters at this point. :| Drop Wil, because I have Rath. And Dorcas because I'll pick up a non-Fighter axe user at some point and I'll use them instead. I will boldly face the one guy with a lance without him. :D
I use the Angelic Robe on Lyn, because she still only has 18HP at level 6, which is too low for my main character. Shuffle some items around and get ready to fight. And I get a new character before I'm allowed to fight. A monk by the name of Lucius, who I instantly assumed was a girl. My bad. And now I need to be explained how to use him, probably for Magic triangle purposes. No, just so I can be explained Barding by Nils.
I take down a couple of early enemies with Matthew, because I'm awesome like that, with Erk supporting him, before again mopping up as I cycle through the map. I stil have more units than enemies I think. Nothing even remotely interesting to talk about here.
I meet Eliwood and Ninian, though neither join me and get a side-quest. Woo sidequest tiem.
Chapter 7x: The Black Shadow
I grab Will for this chapter since walls are his friends, dropping Erk.
The enemy actually outnumbers me here, but the chapter is still easy. Sain, Matthew and Nils run up the west, with everyone else slogging it the long way round. Matthew grabs the hammer from the chest and steals the enemy thieves Lockpicks. "lol" Florina gets the boss. I get Ninis' Grace, which is a ring of mystery. Oooooh~
Chapter 8: Vortex of Strategy
Hey, I arrived in Caelin!
The enemy has deployed a Ballista, so the game suggests I leave Florina behind, but you know what? **** that ****. It's at this point I notice I don't really have a strong defensive character, like a General or somesuch. Sain and Rath on 7 Def are the best I've got. I charge without thinking through the map, and while the Ballista is attacking Kent, kill the archer with Florina. SUCCESS. After that, the chapter proceeds with little to remark upon. Rath collects a Lancereaver from the village and Sain is up to 14 Str at level 8, which makes him basically a weapon of mass destruction.
We wrap up the chapter easily enough, despite all the boss and the units hanging around him having reaver weapons.
Fog of war, good stuff. I ran out of uses of Heal last chapter, so I'm only going to field 9 units, this time round, dropping Will back out for Erk. ... and as soon as I say that, the game gives me another one in Wallace, who instantly promotes, guaranteeing I'll never use him.
Eventually the Fog shows up as do some reinforcements, which results in a little scrambling to get Nils safe. Lucius in the forest deals with the bottom left corner, Erk and Rath take the top right, as everyone else heads left. Kent takes the trip up north and eventually Florina sits on the central fort to stop it spouting out units. Once the reinforcements are under control, Lyn, Sain and Nils head to the boss, who goes down before too long.
Chapter 10: The Distant Plains
Time to take out Lundgren and win the game (does anyone believe that). There's a vendor and an armory here, so I field Serra so she can do her stuff later. I outnumber the enemy, so I'm hoping they get reinforced. Moving out!
Florina takes out 2 archers on her way south, picking up a Heal for Serra and flying back. Everyone else heads through the map, killing enemies as they reach them. Lundgren himself is a bit of a challenge, but Lucius can deal 5 damage to him and doubles, and I Bard her, so she does it all again. 20 damage a turn is pretty good output. Lundgren gets out his javelin and Lucius drops to 1hp (thank god I calculated that right), she retreats for a turn. Lundgren switches to Silver Spear to attack Wallace who's chilling without weapons and Lucius moves back in for the kill. Easy.
FE7 is really annoying to play at first if you've already played another FE. It's why I always recommend it to people new to the series, because the tutorial isn't annoying (well... as annoying) if you don't know how to play.
That tutorial is the entire reason I keep a save at Chapter 10 of Lyn Mode, so I can just skip it whenever I feel like replaying the game. It's slightly more tolerable on Hard Mode, but even then...

You might not even get him back though, so it doesn't really matter. (You either get him back or someone else based on one of the one chapter splits later on, but it's probably best if you just play normally and don't bother trying to figure out how to get the splits right now.)
Though you do want us to tell you how to get units/gaiden chapters as you get to them, right ngirl?
From: 7Deuce86 | #026 Lol female pronouns in reference to Lucius.
Welp. I already forgot Lucy was a guy, wasn't doing that deliberately.
From: tcaz2 | #032 Oh, yeah, Wallace is kinda bad <.<

Only if they're "Rout the enemy, but don't kill any units carrying javelins or archers with a strength divisible by 3". If they're relatively simple, I'll work it out.
Chapter 11: Taking Leave
One year later... something about dragons. How long till we fight them then? Chapter 25? 30?
The return of Eliwood. And I'm there as well! How convenient. Marcus, Lowen and Rebecca round off my party. A turn goes past and Dorcas returns to me, with a friend, Bartre. Bartre has more Strength and Defence than Dorcas despite being 2 levels down on him. I'll use him over Dorcas.
Dorcas grabs an Energy Shield from the village to go with the Energy Ring he's still carrying from the chapter before. Roll through the level and Eliwood finishes off with a level up of just skill. Marvellous.

Well, there's nothing quite that complex (...save one gaiden chapter for second playthroughs, where you have to get Nils to level 7 before the end of Lyn's hard mode, but yeah that's only on second playthroughs), but there's a couple tricky/specific ones iirc...
Trying to get a specific route split for those two chapters though is entirely antithetical to a semi-blind playthrough though as you generally have to alter how you would normally play some chapters to do it, hence why I don't think anyone wants to say til after you get past them.
Only if they're "Rout the enemy, but don't kill any units carrying javelins or archers with a strength divisible by 3". If they're relatively simple, I'll work it out.
The gaiden chapter requirements generally aren't too complex, with the notable exception of a single one that you can't even access until you beat the game once anyway. However, the chapter splits are a bit more abstract. You'll get no indication of what the game uses to decide for it, and it has more to do with what you've been doing through the entire game to that point. They're not really that big a deal, but they're definitely not something you could figure out ahead of time.

Doesn't need to be on Lyn Hard Mode, just Nils to Level 7 or higher (plus the various requirements in the chapters leading up to it), but yeah, either way it's not a concern here.
-- xp1337: Don't you wish there was a spell-checker that told you when you a word out? GotD (219/384) Melee v FFX
Yeah, I want to know how to access Gaiden chapters, not influence chapter splits. Also unit recruitment.
Chapter 12: Birds of a Feather
Marcus grabs a secret book from the village and I move forwards for a couple of turns before the battle shifts dramatically when the boss starts charging towards me and Hector and Oswin show up to help me out. Matthew and Serra reappear briefly, before fleeing the battlefield.
Eliwood deals with the couple of enemies in the centre of the park, Hector kills everything up top and I form a lovely chokepoint down the south. Hector kills the boss from atop a mountain.
and Eliwood finishes off with a level up of just skill. Marvellous.
oh dear
Eliwood is one of those units with growths smack-dab in the middle, so he has a tendency to be either very good or very bad. Hopefully things pick up a bit for you, since, as your main lord, you're kind of stuck with him!
And hey, those stat boosters aren't going to do you any good sitting around. Use 'em!
-- ~Pinkie Pie is the best pony~ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBpfwpOPXNc&NR=1&feature=fvwp
Really, on Eliwood mode you'll be getting enough experience that 12 or more is entirely practical if you want, especially if 1 or 2 is a prepromote. It's only in the Hard Modes that super-efficient team design is important.
Then again, Eliwood Normal is pretty easy in general. She could probably clear the game with just the Lords without much effort.

Ah, yes, well, Chapter 13 has a Gaiden, but you'd probably end up fulfilling the requirements for it without even knowing what they are. Which is actually true of most of the Gaiden Chapters aside from 22x and the one the others keep talking about that's not available on the first playthrough anyway. Hell, 29x has no requirements--it's just automatically unlocked.

A character mentions he knew someone called Matthew. Not even a little bit suspicious, definitely not a chance I should talk to him with Matthew, nuh-uh, no way.
I send Marcus out to the village in the north east, where a merchant drops a flaming torch on him, while the rest of my team do stuff. A crazy woman gives me a mine that may or may not be temperamental. There's a moment of scrabbling after Guy crits Eliwood, but I resolved that easily enough. I recruit Guy and carry on through the level, restocking a couple of weapons. Boss gets Wolf Beil'd by Hector.
Should mention that Eliwood got the Dragonshield and Lowen got the Energy Ring. I forgot about who I gave the secret book to. Possibly Lowen again.
lol'd at the Guy-Matthew bit. Yeah, many of the character recruitments are simple to figure out, but some are tricky. I will say this: bring Priscilla to Chapter 16.
