I'm possibly going to buy a 3DS today so I can get the free games before getting my cash back thanks to the incoming price-drop (already confirmed with Walmart it's in their policy), but I want to be clear on just a few more things before I do it:
1) Did they ever announce the other ten of the twenty free games they would give you for getting a 3DS by 8/11 (that date's correct, yes)?
2) Will you be able to get the free games before 8/11, on 8/11, or afterward?
3) Are any of the free games in 3D, or are they all expected to be in their original form?
4) How do you get the games? I imagine by connecting to the internet in Wi-Fi...probably pretty easy, but it's worth asking now before I go through with this.
5) Outside of LoZ:OoT3D, what 3DS games out now would you recommend the most? I know they have some good games coming soon, but what's good so far?

1) No they didn't announce the games, and you have to connect your 3ds to the eshop by 8/11 at 11:59pm eastern
2) NES games on Sept 1, GBA by the end of the year.
3) As far as I know, at first they will be original form, but we're supposed to get free access to updated versions when the come out later on the eshop. Most people assume it means playable multiplayer and not 3d though.
4) Download off the eshop.

This is excellent news, which I was going to try to find out this week. I just want to be sure that I can do it at like Walmart or Best Buy with absolute certainty, rather than find out after I buy one up that it's excluded for some reason and then be out the $80.

1. Not yet, although IIRC Nintendo said they'll announce them before August 12.... though I think they also might've just said they'll be announcing the NES games, not sure.

As for the free updates to those games, that'd be fascinating...I'd love to be able to play Contra online for example, and I'm sure plenty of other older games could benefit from the online play too. 3D-upgrades would be nice too, but I'm all about them focusing on improving their multi-player first if they do any upgrades at all.

as gmun said, they haven't announced all the games yet. they did announce a couple of 'em though, and the biggest relevant ones are SMBA3, the GBA Mario Kart, and Metroid Fusion that i could remember. at the least the GBA ones won't be bad.
free games are gonna be dated accordingly, and to answer 3 as well we get the originals and that's the 'exclusive' portion. there seems to be an implication that some games are getting some extra treatment (unknown to what degree) and you'd be able to get those too. or at least that's the way i read it because otherwise there would be no reason to say that you can get the later ones for free too - if they were the same who cares? if they're different, awesome.
and yeah, just get online, update your 3DS, and you'll get the eshop. easy enough, as is everything online right now (see: one friend code for all).
as for the games, you've a couple options. strange as it may be, Ghost Recon is a good game and plays nothing like older ones. it's an SRPG, you control up to 6 units. it's also on the easy side, there aren't any real unlockables, and the story's entirely forgettable, but the gameplay is pretty good and it's got a pretty decent 3D going for it. there's also multiplayer on it, which is probably a bigger deal, though i haven't tried that yet so i can't tell you anything on that.
the Super Monkey Balls game on it is also good and probably the best entry in the series to date (maybe 2nd behind the original). 3D works well on that game, but you DO have to have your eyes adjust to it more than the others from what i saw.
avoid BlazBlue as it does not have wi-fi play. i also don't really like fighting games on handhelds at all so i can't tell you anything on DoA either, just am a firm believer that fighting games = consoles or PC only. if you don't believe that though, then DoA's gotten plenty of good reviews for it.

I'll be sure to post it, no worries. I probably won't buy a 3DS-game yet (I'll go on eBay for one or two after I get my $80 back), but I'm looking forward to gaming on a current system again -- I haven't done so on a system that's actually mine since probably 2005. I've always wanted a handheld too, and now I can get DS-games for it real cheap as well? Score.

Funny you mention fighting games -- I was thinking about Super Street Fighter 4, but I'm afraid I'll resort to just using the touch-pad to spam more powerful moves instead of learning much about it.

oh yeah, reminds me. wait for sale son some of those games. like Ghost Recon was $17 from TRU not too long ago, and semi-frequently there are sales on some of these early games. ditto for Monkey Balls. so these launch titles really haven't been sold too highly anymore (DoA and Zelda are different stories... for now).

alternatively it's because ghost recon was never an SRPG before and instead has been a shooter since its beginning. though GRAW was pretty popular when it came out, ditto for its sequel. but really any squad based shooter where you rely on the AI is gonna have some hits against it since they've normally been bad no matter the game (until recently). both ways, different genre and pretty good, though easy.

you probably need to update your 3DS if you don't see it. it wasn't something that came with the system by default but added on later. should be with all your icons.

By 'sign in', does it just mean connect to the eStore, or do I have to make an actual account? I downloaded the freebies (Excitebike, Pokedex) without ever giving any personal details (as far as I can remember).

We know two more of the GBA games. Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 and Kirby & the Amazing Mirror.

Dark Void Zero's a pretty awesome retro game. Funny that DSiWare game turned out to be better than Dark Void itself!
Soul of Darkness is like a total Castlevania ripoff, although it's chaptered intead of a giant castle to explore
Chronos Twins is an increddddibly god damn harddd dual-screen platformer. It's pretty cool and unique, but soooooo harddd.
Ivy the Kiwi Mini is a very fun touch control game - possibly my favourite use of touch controls. it's a platformer where you draw lines to create vines to guide a bird that keeps walking forward.
Anonymous Notes is pretty cool for its price. It's an ARPG dungeon crawler where you can absorb skills from enemies, there's 2 chapters for 2 bucks each
and from Virtual Console there's of course Kirby's Dream Land
that's all I know so far aside from shantae and zelda - though I purchased A Kappa's Trail because someone here kept mentioning it, though I haven't started playing it yet...

ehhh, Nintendo recently deconfirmed this. I mean they very well could be lying, but either way it's not 100% confirmed
I've got it! It's an Aqua Blue with a new and improved battery...minus the new and improved battery. I've only been able to look at it for the past seven hours, but now it's at least charging; I'll play it soon. What kind of experience do the Mii Plaza and AR Games give?

AR Games gives a pretty cool introduction to some stuff like the internal gyro and 3D, while Mii Plaza and the like are... mostly like the idea of the Pokewalker only for a handheld. walk around, unlock stuff which you can use for your avatar.

Okay, I've done the majority of system-work to set it up. It's going through the system update now, then I can get the eShop and see what they have to hold me over. I gotta make sure it's a game I won't get for free now.....

None of the Ambassador games are on the eShop yet. They're giving out NES and GBA games, and there's only original Game Boy and Game Boy Color games on the eShop.
