I'm pretty sure that prevents me from knowing about 90% of today's modern musicians.

To be very honest, the internet is today's #1 source of music. Most people these days blow up because of the internet, radio play just adds to it.

How exactly can you determine what is talented and what is not?

That's completely a subjective thing. Unless you mean the praise they'll get years after, in that case it's unknown if Winehouse will be remembered in time. Why am I even responding to you anymore?

Someone post an example of a famous Amy Winehouse song so I'll know who we're talking about here.

Back to Black is one out of two albums to sell in excess of 10 million copies worldwide in the last 5 years. Rehab was a hit internationally, but mostly the album kept on selling through word of mouth.

Never heard of either of those.

Of course I can barely name the albums of my favorite singers either. I'm strictly a song to song basis guy.

I guess I'm just not into the celebrity side of music enough.

But what do you expect from a guy whose #1 band is Barenaked Ladies.

Well if SBell, has an extensive background in the music industry or has some objective data to prove that she does not have a modicum of talent, then he is right.

But if he can't then welp, I mean the public likes her music as proven by the high sales and her peers who have a certain amount of credible knowledge in the field of music have recognised her talents and have given her awards as a result.

I'm surprised whenever people act so ignorant of popular music. Even if you don't listen to it yourself, how do you go through life without hearing it in a store, in a commerical, in a movie/tv show, etc. There's so many places where music is played.

I never got this

I never listen to the most mainstream radio stations either out of free will, but music like this is just so popular you can't get around it unless you live your life in house everyday without any other people around.

I guess it's just because I'm pretty young I guess and have friends that follow this kind of pop culture, I dunno?

If you hear it in a store or commercial or a TV show, there isn't usually anything to tell you who or what you just listened to.

Not to mention that with TiVo I haven't watched a single commercial on TV in years.

in his defence, he was 3 months old.

it's not surprising that some people don't know who Amy Winehouse is. they just don't listen to music. radio is less relevant now than it ever has been before, so the few times you may here popular songs are when you actively seek out music, or when you go out shopping/eating/clubbing/etc, and you won't often find out who you're passively listening to in that situation.

I never got this though, why would you judge someone's music based on their personality and personal life? Most of the time you can't get around them when listening to their music lyrically, I'll give you that, but it doesn't really change if you like the song or not. A song about drugs can still be a great song (example for the old people: Heroin by Velvet Underground). A song about partying too. It all depends on how it hits you. Guess I'm just weird?
