Friends of Mineral town is basically a remake of Back to Nature. A few added features of course. More Friends of Mineral Town is FOMT, but the girl version.

Harvest Moon: Boy and Girl is a port of Back to Nature. Nothing added, other than the option to play as a girl. Some bugs were fixed, but it has it's own new bugs. Haven't got to play it yet (still need to buy it) but that's pretty much it. The digital copy on the PSX store apparently loads faster than the PSX version, but nobody has said anything about the UMD version.

Animal Parade and Tree of Tranquility have been better than... well the other more recent games (Magical Melody, A Wonderful Life). Nothing has matched BTN/64. But they're both still good games. But both have the same characters. So unless you are a HM Fanatic, you probably want to pick just one.

I'd recommend Animal Parade personally. Neither have great festivals (sadly all the best festivals have been used up a long time ago). It's a bit more challenging, and I think it starts out a bit faster too. There's a little more to do in it as well.

The only real downside to Animal Parade I think is that you can only have 3 types of animals in your barn. While in Tree of Tranquility, you can have all types of animals in your farm. Oh and time moves a little too slow in Animal Parade.

XD, I've been sigged!

And still so true

The lack of festivals and events is what turned me off to Tree of Tranquility. I like the cast of characters and the layout of the map, as well as the storyline and tasks, but there's a serious absence of life. Festivals may keep you from making money, but they keep you interested in the town and provide a wonderful break from the norm. Easter Egg Hunt and Horse Races FTW. And there's no game like Harvest Moon 64 where you can just walk into an area, see a random cutscene you don't know how you triggered and may never see again, and just continue on your way.

The worst thing about Harvest Moon 64 is getting married. Only because everyone else gets married and conversations stop evolving and no one goes to the bar at night.

One improvement later games made was heart ratings for ALL the characters.

Sorry to disappoint, but HM64 is probably never going to be released on VC. It's not because they don't want to release, it's because of technical problems with transferring the game over.

http://nerdmentality.com/article/5730/interview-natsumes-vice-president-of-operations-graham-markay/

We have some huge fans of Harvest Moon 64 on our website, and we are wondering if it will ever come out on Virtual Console?

GM: It will not. It will not. And it's not from lack of trying. Unfortunately, the code of the game is not... it's not an easy transfer. It would be really time-consuming and long, and we've looked into it, and we've tried to see if there's any way around certain things, but the conversion to virtual console, it's just... I shouldn't say it's never going to come out, but there's just a really, really, very small chance that it would ever come out. Which is unfortunate because we know that for a lot of dedicated, die-hard fans, that's their favorite.

Differences between HM64 and Back to Nature: This should cover the basics.

Gameplay:
-Rucksack. In Harvest Moon 64, you have to go into the menu to pull tools and stuff out. In Back to Nature, there is a button that will let you cycle through stuff.
-Basket. In Harvest Moon 64, you are limited to your rucksack. In Back to Nature, you can buy a basket that can hold 30 things (you must ship them however)
-Festivals. HM64 has the Egg Hunt, while BTN does not. BTN however has a swimming contest, a chicken sumo contest, and a tomato festival (where you must throw tomatoes at the other team)
-Tool upgrades. HM64 has tools upgrade automatically. In Back to Nature you must mine for minerals, and pay to upgrade them once you have used them enough.
-Marriage. Cosmetic difference mostly, in 64, you have 5 heart levels. In BTN you have 7.
-Farm Size. In HM64 you have a medium sized farm. In BTN you have a large one.
-Horse. In Back to Nature, if your horse doesn't like you enough, it can be taken away.
-Crops. HM64 has a small selection of crops (around 3 per season) while BTN has a larger variety (4+ per sesaon)
-Bees. In HM64, there are no bees. In BTN you can get bees to come to you. You can harvest honey once per day.
-Cooking. In HM64 recipes are for collection purposes. In Back To Nature, you can actually cook the recipes. You have to buy utensils however.

-Town Layout.
In Harvest Moon 64, the town layout is pretty simple. There aren't a lot of turns you can make. Your farm is VERY simple.

In Back to Nature, the town layout is more complicated. It's not hard to learn, but you DO have to explore a little. Your farm is a little more complex, with more than one entrance.

There are also character differences, but it's probably best to discover them for yourself.

Yeah, 64 has a swimming contest. Though I prefer BTN's.

One major downfall of BTN though is the loading times. They're terrible.

Just did a quick count on crops though:

Harvest Moon 64 has a total of 6 different crops and 2 different flowers
Back to Nature has a total of 15 different crops and 4 different flowers

Holy wow I want to play BtN now then.

I've played through HM64 more times than I could really remember and so this could be very enjoyably different.

Usually when I do a new playthrough I will theme my names in some way. I think my favorite was my FF8 themed game. My farm was Balamb, my dog was Cerby (Cerberus wouldn't fit!) and it was incredibly satisfying raising my chicken Seifer and my cow Edea. ^_~ I themed all the other animal names as well but those two were my favorites.

And you know, right now I think that BtN is much better in terms of gameplay, but character interactions, especially with the chicks, is a lot worse here. Granted I'm not very far in yet, but it's not really the same feeling. Plus it's really weird having Karen have a freaking amazing backstory in 64 to... whatever she does in BtN. And seeing every other character in their various stations feels almost out of place, except for Maria who works in a library anyway. And Elli too, I guess, but she could literally be a sailor and I wouldn't know the difference.

I guess HM64 still has purpose. Good thing, too!
