you never know, plum.

a few things of note: keeping yourself in the middle of the shop grid thingy will attract the most customers iirc, as some like particular looks more than others.

if you DO fail to repay debt, all is not lost, as you can restart with all your items and merchant levels.

also, dungeon diving isn't recommended when trying to pay the debt off, as the rewards aren't too impressive early on, and spending time making them impressive eats into profit time. certainly worth exploring a bit though, as you get free items essentially.

But dungeons are fun! How else am I supposed to get good stuff, buy things from the guild/idiotic customers who don't realize how much their items are worth?

and auuuugh people worse than the little girls that sounds painful.

Actually, if you can do all of Jade Way your first time entering it's worth it to run 2-3 times in the very first week. Then you have a pretty huge base of items that would take a lot longer to get buying and selling from scratch, and you can grow exponentially from there.

to get good stuff faster, aim for getting a lot of combo chains to get lots of exp to raise merchant level to get new tiers of items. this is one reason to have a balanced shop grid thingy, as more people = more buying/selling = more exp.

as i have posted in other topics, the game feels like 85% shop and 15% dungeon pre debt payed off, and 85% dungeon 15% shop afterwards.

there is a recettear wiki too, so if you are unclear about a mechanic (and there are a number of hidden mechanics at work, like customer affection/spending money), it is a good resource.

HERE THERE BE SPOILERS PROBABLY

On the last episode of Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale...!

Deadbeat dads! Loanshark fairies! Child labor! Adventurers living below the poverty line! The defeat of the King Slime! And absurdly expensive fruit!

Day 6
Current Cash: 7,744 pix
Merchant Level 3

Deciding to skip on adventuring today and actually run my store, I run down to the market to pick up new items for the store! I bought some delicious food in case some customers came in with requests, and then I dragged Tear to the Town Square, where some weird little elf kid was running after her sister. I wonder if she can become my friend/customer/indentured servant like Louie is?

Still, gotta focus on making profit, so then I went to the Merchant Guild to grab some shiny new weapons and armor for any adventurous customers, though I may have spent a bit much, since I left my shopping trip with only 884 pix left...But hey! I'll be able to turn a profit with this, no problem!

As it turns out, I had plenty of customers ask for food, and one WORTHLESS PENNY PINCHER asked about my iron armor on display, though he turned down my perfectly reasonable price! Another old man asked about the Thankful Statue I had on display, but he was too much of a cheapskate to buy it. Still, my other customers, who actually had money, bought plenty of stuff from me, bringing me to 11,104 pix! Now I've got enough to make my payment on the 8th, though if I go to the market and the Guild again, I'll still need to work hard today and tomorrow to raise funds.

Day 7
Current Cash: 11,104 pix
Merchant Level 4

Well, apparently my new Merchant Level lets me buy new things, so off to the market and the guild I go! I pick up some new armor and a steel sword, mostly in the hope that Louie will show up and get better stuff for future dungeon excursions. I also grab some books and more food, as well as a hat. Everyone loves hats! Sadly, this leaves me with a mere 1,204 pix, but hey, people will pay more for my new items, right?

Sales...aren't so hot. Louie, being poor, can't even pay me 2000 pix for the sword, and there's a stupid amount of old men who want treasures but don't want to pay decent prices for them! NOW I HATE OLD MEN MORE THAN LITTLE GIRLS. I manage to make some sales, but I need about 3,000 more pix to make the payment.

Day 8
Current Cash: 7,704 pix
Merchant Level 4

Desperate for cash, I keep the store open all day and start undercutting myself. Louie finally buys the sword for a mere 1,000, 33% of the thing's value. Still, a sale's a sale...but all these men who are out shopping for their wives and the stingy geezers don't make this easy. In the end, I'm saved by a housewife buying a bowl of beef soup, pushing me above 10,000 and boosting my Merchant Level!

Payment: 10,000 px COMPLETE

Day 9
Current Cash: 404 pix
Merchant Level 5

HERE COMES A NEW CHALLENGER !!
And...she's kinda dumb. At least I won't have to worry about competent rivals, right? RIIIIGHT?

Annnd that's all for today. Hopefully I can somehow make double what I made this week to survive to the next payment date! But if my customers are still stingy...

louie is just about the worst. average character, but painfully limited. charme raeps dungeons with speed and only takes a few dungeons to get leveled well (hell, at first, leveling up was how i healed her). and mage boy pretty much raeps bosses with his spam happy spells. the other characters all have their pros and cons too, but those two are great for grinding stuff. as far as equipment goes, just set out a bunch of the highest stuff you have for them in the shop, eventually they will buy. failing that, bring a few key items with you to the dungeon and equip them there.

Day 9
Current Cash: 404 pix
Merchant Level 5

So! Fusion. It's nice to see it follows a recipe system rather than a "just guess and don't blame us if you waste your ingredients creating molten junk" system. I fuse some nice and expensive items that I probably won't be able to sell due to the rampant poverty and then clear the next part of the Jade Way. Easy stuff, and the boss reminded me of THE FEEEEEEEEAR with the poison mushroom mechanic.

of course, now i'm broke. Whoops~

Day 10
Current Cash: 0 pix
Merchant Level 5

Candy is up, and Louie's on the run! I stay at the shop to sell off some items, before going to the Merchant's Guild and devouring most of my profit. What a world, huh? At least I seem to be getting better at making sure my customers don't leave. The 110-120% price range seems to work pretty well most of the time.

Day 11
Current Cash: 285 pix
Merchant Level 5

Sinister items! I have no idea what those are. Oh well~ I head out to do some adventuring...and fine that the guild is closed today. Ffffffff. Sales, then! I'm getting more NearPins somehow, so that's good for my merchant level, at least! Not so much my wallet, but what can you do? I make a few sales, but I'm still below 5,000 pix. I'm gonna lose my home~

Day 12
Current Cash: 3,472 pix
Merchant Level 6

I stop by the market to grab a few odds and ends, including some new wallpaper for the shop. Hopefully it does something! After that and forcing Tear to help a little girl, it's time to finish up the Jade Way! It's a bit tougher, but at the end, I meet Charme, the lady thief and likely my next friend/indentured slave! I welcome her with a nice big sword of friendship. To the face.

Day 13
Current Cash: 642 pix
Merchant Level 6

auuuugh i need to make 30k pix in the next two days how do

woah...110-120%? that seems a bit high. like, 105-110% is best in the beginning iirc, as you will get more near pin/just pin combos which = more exp which = more merchant levels which = better stuff faster. plus you will get more <3 above their heads which means more reputation which means they can spend more monies.

The Man will also pay around this range, not as high as the weapon shop dude
The Housewife tends to be in the 115 range or so.

Typically you have to lower a tiny bit for JUST chains.

The worst thing is that girl who comes in and sells things for outrageous prices.

Day 13
Current Cash: 642 pix
Merchant Level 6

Since I lacked the funds to go purchase new supplies, I kept the shop open all day to make some sales. Unfortunately, I only made a few thousand in sales, and then a little girl foisted a treasure on me, cutting into my profits. I run over to the Merchant's Guild at night to do some restocking, but with armor and accessory prices wildly fluctuating, I'm a bit cautious with my purchases. Hopefully I'll have enough to get some good profits tomorrow, but I'm a bit doubtful.

My 30k payment was cleared with a great deal of ease and my 80k payment (3 days away) is more than covered at this point.

Avoiding the dungeons isn't a good piece of advice in my opinion. They provide you with too many things worth selling. You just shouldn't leave them while your adventurer is still good to go for more (which probably won't be the first time you send them down the Jade Path). Tossing slime fluids and crap like that is totally worth it if your adventurer can go another 5-10 floors (or provide better items to sell). And since it only takes half a day to explore a dungeon, no matter how many levels you explore, you can get so many good items at "no cost" that you shouldn't leave unless there's absolutely no way to make it another 5 levels.

Of course, I'm only 18 days in, so we'll see what we learn from there.
My experience is that if you just eat all your healing items (yay! a game where items matter in battles) and push as far as you can, you'll emerge with a lot to sell and those items will be high pix earners.

I've been playing more recently to try to get everyones "True" cards so I can tackle survival mode with some cushion.

In general, you should not have too much trouble making payments until the 200K one or so if you level up enough (to get fusion items) Some fusion items are very easy to make and can net a ton of profit (especially early ones). It's important to expand your store too (if you havn't) because more tables=more customers.

Also, if you want to avoid little girls you can set your store to dark, as they will be more likely to avoid this. (Too bad the heretic set is the best for "dark" and it's pretty pricey).

It can work for the first two weeks maybe, but the amount of debt you have to pay back increases at a much faster rate than the profit you get from dungeons will increase.
