Wow Metal Gear Solid broke 90% on a game that had two wins.

Link's Awakening did worse against Legend of Legaia than Shadow of the Colossus did in week 5, further proving that Nintendo has been sucking it up lately.

Oh and now all three Mario RPGs have lost (well okay, not quite Paper Mario, but failing to break 60% on a GTA might as well be the same thing!).

I love how Animal Crossing gets to devour the casual shooters. Hilarious.

The majority of these results make me very happy, as I absolutely hated Gunstar Heroes and would vote for any game that's facing it, and likewise seeing Smash Bros....no, wait, that was Suikoden III that just got doubled up there. Okay, yeah, whatever. I don't really have any strong feelings towards the Suikoden franchise as a whole--hell, the one game in the series I've played (Tierkreis), I loved--but for some strange reason, Luca Blight (and by extension, Suikoden II) just rubs me the wrong way.

On the not-so-good side, Thousand-Year Door disappoints me yet again. I'm kind of glad that I did end up changing my mind and voting for it this past week, though, because both of its previous losses came on weeks when it would have cracked my ballot had it won and I'd hate to do that to the game three times in a row.

Funny, I don't recall many people dropping Melee out of their top 25 for losing to the #17 game that got beat pretty easily by Mario 3 the week before! In fact, it didn't even drop out of the top 10!

Yeah, #20 sounds about right for it. This is, I believe, Brawl's first match against a ranked game, so if the result holds, it'll be 0-1 in matches that matter, and the loss won't be to a top 10 game.

R/B/Y is currently losing to Star Fox 64, a game with no wins against the top 25, a loss to SoulCalibur II, and a narrow win over G/S/C.

Assuming the result holds, how do you plan on treating R/B/Y?

Are you going to somehow justify it by saying "Star Fox 64 is a top 15 game because it beat R/B/Y," although you'd never give Galaxy 2 the same benefit of the doubt for beating Brawl?

And what's PW1's criteria for "It's better than 17th?" Because it beat Melee? It's 1-2 in ranked matches and has some puzzling and unimpressive performances against Banjo-Kazooie and TWEWY to boot.

If RBY loses here, I'm going to rank it much lower.....maybe outside the top 10. I was always reluctant to rank it so high actually, but it smashed FFVI and beat Melee, and naturally made its way to the top. I still didn't vote it over OOT until just this week, but OOT put up some rather disappointing performances recently so I went with the consensus opinion. Star Fox 64 will get onto my list of course, probably between #15 and #20.

PW is much better than #17 for exactly the reasons you stated: it beat Melee and had very close matches with SMB3 and SMW.

Why on earth would I give a game the same credit for beating RBY and Brawl? RBY is a stronger game, with proven wins against ranked games. Brawl is not. If you beat the champion (or in this case, our #3), you get a lot of credit. If you beat a game that I've never ranked all season- why would that get any credit from me? I expected Galaxy 2 to beat Brawl, if it happens, that reinforces my previous notions of their strength. I did not expect SF64 to beat RBY or to come close really, so if it pulls if off- that means I have to make big changes in my thinking.

I don't see how you can use "It beat a game I think highly of" as justification for keeping Melee ranked highly.

"PW1 is better than 17th because it beat Melee so I'll keep Melee in my top 10." Seems a bit circular to me. It seems like you're giving certain games the benefit of the doubt and not others. "Brawl lost to Galaxy 2 so it's weak." "R/B/Y lost to Star Fox 64 so SF64 is strong."

Galaxy 2 and Star Fox 64, there isn't a large difference between these two games, I would wager.

Galaxy 2 and Star Fox 64, there isn't a large difference between these two games, I would wager.

I daresay there isn't much of a difference, which is why I'm going to rank those games really close to each other, probably somewhere from 15-20. The difference between RBY and Brawl is that Brawl only has this loss against ranked competition while RBY has an OT win over Melee and an absolute demolition of FFVI.

It's based on evidence from matches, not benefit of the doubt. There is a component to this that you get from experience on the board outside of this contest.....but I think I'm being pretty reasonable here. It's not exactly controversial that this board likes CT, SSBM, SMB3/W/64, etc. CT and SSBM have won board contests before. Melee was ranked above Brawl in the pre-season rankings for a reason. As the season goes on and we get more and more evidence from inside the contest, we can disregard pre-contest expectations more and more.

At this point it's not really about those expectations anymore. Brawl's finally gotten a chance to prove itself.....and it lost (assuming the result holds).

Edit: It's not like Melee has a bunch of matches against unranked games and a single ranked loss to PW. It went to OT against RBY and beat SM64 comfortably. Also, the margin of victory matters, and PW's 3 high-tier matches were all very close.

And yes, swirldude is correct. These games sometimes seem to change in strength over the course of the contest, which makes ranking games even trickier. The newer results should probably take some more priority over the older results.

Which would bode well for SF64, I suppose, since those first three bad results happened early in the contest.

The difference between #15 and #25 is miniscule. If we were doing spread betting, the line would probably be something like 2 votes. Those other results point to Star Fox being somewhere around #25, while this RBY upset if it holds points to it being a top 5 game. So you average them. Matches against stronger opponents are weighted more because we know more about them, but of course multiple matches have the advantage of numbers against a single match.

I feel like we're trying to measure different things here. I'm trying to construct a list ranking the games in order of strength, which is the number of wins I would expect them to get if they played all the games. I feel like you're ranking them more like a sports division or something, giving games credit for winning, regardless of the circumstances.

You seem to be downplaying certain results and emphasizing others. Losing to Galaxy 2 doesn't mean Brawl doesn't deserve to be in the top 25 anymore, just like Melee losing to PW1 or R/B/Y losing to SF64 means they shouldn't be in the top 25 anymore either. Yes, the others have more of a resume, but that's not really Brawl's fault because it doesn't get to pick its own schedule.

And I don't mind using "personal expectations" in a sense to make rankings, but I think your personal anti-Brawl sentiment purposely lowers your expectations for it and so you judge it more harshly than you would games of similar strength.

Well, there's a reason why I didn't have RBY in my top 10 earlier, but I never expected it to be this bad. I have a feeling that Star Fox is just gaining momentum though. It sounds like the kind of game to do so.

This also ties into something I've been noticing the past few weeks: Nintendo is starting to suck it up and consistently disappoint, even in Nintendo-Nintendo matches because there the "lesser of the two evils" overperforms as if it were not Nintendo at all. I'd say that the biggest "evils" from Nintendo would be, in this order from most targeted to least, would be:

1) Classic Mario platformers
2) Classic Zelda
3) Pokemon
4) Mario RPGs
5) Smash Bros.

Also it will certainly be ironic for RBY to lose in the same week where BW wins its match, but yeah.

My eyes are definitely on Super Metroid here. Sonic Adventure giving DMC3 a scare made me feel more comfortable about Super Metroid's win, and...no, it isn't going to lose to something that struggled to defeat Skies of Arcadia for heaven's sake. At least...I hope...

Well, I've never ranked Brawl, and I have been ranking Galaxy 2, so from my perspective, this match is going exactly as expected. Now, for people who have been ranking Brawl higher than Galaxy 2, this result should be a surprise, in which case something should change. Usually games who lose to other games in the #20 area fall out of the top 25......I don't think any game has survived losing to a game ranked below #15 and still stayed on the top 25 the following week yet. So why would Brawl be different?

I don't feel I'm being unfair at all here. I could be wrong about Brawl's strength, but I'm not ranking it lower than where I honestly think it is.

I really don't think Skies is all that strong. The best it has done is...double Halo? Wow, top class performance right there, folks!

Then again, in retrospect, Skies did only about 6% worse than Snake Eater did against the same opponent, although maybe Snake Eater isn't too strong either!

Eh, Super Metroid will probably perform around Galaxy 2's level against MGS2.

Is it sad that I've "beaten" (I use that in quotations for stuff like SSBM) half of the games on the RPI top 25 considering all the flak I get for not having played many games?

Okay, looking at today:

Super Metroid and Sons of Liberty are currently tied. Wowzers.

Half-Life 2 is having a far easier time against the original Kingdom Hearts than it did against the sequel somehow.

F-Zero is once again showing that it can't hang with the big boys. Galaxy is currently doubling it.
