By the standards of Top 5 in the world yeah, but not top 50 or 100 or as a professional tennis player overall. He has 17 titles at the moment, and does well at grand slams for sure, if he was mentally weak he would never be at this stage right now.

I reckon if he was playing another player besides the absolute top players right now, he would be able to recover from this dip in form. But this is Nadal and a grand slam semi-final I guess, and even a slight dip is beyond punishing.

Break point against Murray.

Nadal won the next 4 games.

What a great time to come into the match.

When you are considered a top player, losing one of the biggest matches of your career because of one missed shot is inexcusable. You can't justify his behaviour here.

Also the only man not to win a set in three grand slam final attempts.

If that (and this match) doesn't indicate massive mental frailty and weakness at the standard required for a top-level player then what does.

Then again, voltch argument etc

Whilst Murray obviously isn't as mentally tough as the Top 3, I think it becomes far more exposed by the fact that Nadal just doesn't let up and does not really suffer dips in his game. He's just consistently damn good all match.

Against someone else even though his game went to hell, he probably wouldn't have been broke 3 times in a row. It's only the top 3 who really punish his dips in form.

Yaaawn, take some chill pills.

If losing to a better player made you weak, then every woman who ever faced Graf in her prime is weak.

Murray's career sees some statistical anomalies, but hey look Michael Chang's Finals record is bad, he was just lucky to win one.

In six years murray has amassed an impressive resume, I don't like him, but I think he is the best trained player on the tour, he just doesn't have the sheer talent some of the other prodigies around him have.

Murray actually has beaten these guys before, when you look at his career record, it shows he is going to have wins and losses, it happening in a grand slam doesn't make him weak, its the other guy being that good. Nadal's desire to win is scary you know.

It's not just about this match or just Nadal.

Murray can beat Nadal and Federer. He has done it quite often outside of the majors (and he has beat Nadal in majors) but any HUGE stage and he kind of shies away from the winning tennis he is capable of.

He doesn't and never will have Federer/Nadal level mental toughness and no one will blame him for that.

But (and consider the source here) there is simply no arguing that Andy Murray has GRAND SLAM WINNING TALENT.

No arguing.

But as of now he doesn't have the head for it.

Yeah, he was more so superior at that point, he was dictating play and beating Nadal consistently in the rallies, and he won the first set.

But yeah, I concede lol.

Yeah but he CAN beat those guys.

He does it often.

The only difference is getting it done on a big stage.

I mean, unless you think it is because he is not fit for five sets (and that isn't that case).

I would say Murray has been unlucky to be consistently be matched up against guys who excel at this type of tournament.

I mean I don't think its Murray being weaker as it is them raising their games, imagine if Murray was playing when say Thomas Johansson got his Slam out of the blue, weird things just happen from time to time.

Or look at last year's wimminz Roland Garros, there's a fair bit of luck involved.

This is why your arguments suck. It's like a lack of...subtlety, I guess? Are you completely unaware that my complaints here are not about him losing the match but the MANNER in which he is losing? Seriously. This isn't just a "loss". He hasn't lost three tight tiebreaks or something. This is an absolute capitulation, nothing less.

Murray can and probably will win a slam (probably the US Open if any) but he barring him playing fantastically towards to latter stages he is relying on the big guns being taken out by someone else.

When you consider the sheer amount of SF and Finals appearance they have racked up between them over the years it is scary. If you swap Murray and Henman, Murray probably wins several slams in Henman's career where there was only really Sampras above his level.

Murray's still young and he might sneak one in eventually, but man, Sampras I saw some of his stuff when he wasn't in his prime, he'd be unbeatable.

Assuming of course Murray goes through the same conditioning and training process the 1990s had, since physically these athletes are better and the balls are different, the racquets are different and even the surface isn't exactly the same. You have people now talking about wimbledon being slower and Roland Garros being faster than before.

Let's say he ends up with 7 or 8 total French Opens.

Yeah but Sampras is only one man and did not win every single slam across the course of his career. That's the point I'm making. Back then Murray would have only needed Sampras to fail to stand a real chance. However now he is relying on Nadal, Djoko and Federer to have a bad match/be taken out by someone else.
