#47 Most Extreme Elimination Challenge (2003–2007)
Comedy, Game Show? kinda?
Mega Mana's Ranking: Not on the list (yet?)

Don't Get Eliminated!

Take clips of wacky Japanese Game show Takeshi's Caslte, add ridiculous parody commentary, throw in a dash of schadenfreuda, and you get comedy gold. That is MXC. Ever seen Wipeout? Ever wonder why the commentators on it seem odd? It's cause they are copying MXC.

MXC is histerical. Often times it is not my normal type of humor, but I still love it. It's a bunch of crazy games, with voice overs that are blatent in not being correct to the original, and a bunch of running jokes. There is no topic this show is afraid to laugh at. The fact that the original Japanese game show is hilarious and full of ridiculous contestants and great falls just makes it better. I love when a game is all but impossible.

Kenny Blankenship and Vic Romano are the best commentators ever.

Seriously, if you like Wipeout you need to watch this show or the original, they are so much better. Either way, everyone should watch MXC. There are so many great quotes in this show. My buddies will still quote it from time to time (typically while playing video games).

#46 Home Improvement (1991-1999)
Comedy, Sitcom
Mega Mana's Ranking: 66

Tim the Tool Man Taylor makes the one home improvement show I would actually watch. Tim Allen is great at physical comedy and he completely and totally carries this show. That said, Wilson, Al, and the kids are all very enjoyable characters and the family dynamic here is actually done very well. This is just one of the classic shows of my generation.

#45 Fresh Prince of Bel-air (1990-1996)
Comedy, Sitcom
Mega Mana's Ranking: 52

Now, this is the story all about how
My life got flipped-turned upside down
And I'd like to take a minute
Just sit right there
I'll tell you how I became the prince of a town called Bel Air

In west Philadelphia born and raised
On the playground was where I spent most of my days
Chillin' out maxin' relaxin' all cool
And all shootin some b-ball outside of school
When a couple of guys
Who were up to no good
Startin making trouble in my neighborhood
I got in one little fight and my mom got scared
She said 'You're movin' with your auntie and uncle in Bel Air'
I whistled for a cab and when it came near
The license plate said fresh and it had dice in the mirror
If anything I can say is that this cab was rare
But I thought 'Man forget it' - 'Yo home to Bel Air'

I pulled up to the house about seven or eight
And I yelled to the cabbie 'Yo homes smell ya later'
I looked to my kingdom
I was finally there
To sit on my throne as the Prince of Bel Air

Didn't expect Community to be up so high, though I have no disagreements with it. I think Arrested Development's writing is better but god damn, Community is still sheer genius. Modern Warfare will forever be the best 22 minutes of television to exist in my opinion. And all the callbacks and little things you never expect to mean anything (cough zombie episode cough) just provide so many great moments. Someday, If the show goes long enough by some miracle, maybe Troy and Abed will be able to challenge J.D. and Turk.

#44 Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (1993-1997)
Action, Fantasy?
Mega Mana's Ranking: Not Ranked

I'm not a big fan of Superman. Most the time I find him pretty boring. This series is the one and only time I really loved the character. I think the big reason is that in this series Superman is the alternate identity of Clark Kent rather than the other way around like it usually is. Clark still wants to be a normal guy, he just does the superhero thing because he knows it is right. And Clark Kent is a great and entertaining character in this show, partially because he is so much more human than normal. You can say the same stuff about Smallville's Clark, but this is a better show all around. Biggest problem it has is there are some truly awful plotlines, particularly later in the series. But the first few seasons are great.

#43 Joan of Arcadia (2003-2005)
Drama, Fantasy
Mega Mana's Ranking: 70

God talks to a teenage girl. Many crazy adventures and funny moments ensue. As a Christian I think this show does an excellant job of portraying God, and what it is often like to follow him. I love how often the things he has her do seem pointless only to have a purpose she could never imagine. The drama with her family and friends is also excellant, with the cast doing a truly great job.

The first season of this show is amazing. The second season is a letdown. While still good it just can't compete, and the plotline of her doubting her messages from God so easily was just ludicrous considering all that had happened.

I'm still always amazed this show only went two seasons, so much happened that it seems like it had to have gone on longer.

#42 Sanctuary (2008-____)
Sci-fi, Mystery
Mega Mana's Ranking: Not Ranked

My favorite of the new crop of Sci-fi original shows. This is pretty basic, the world is full of mutants and strange "abnormal" creatures. The sanctuary find them and keeps them safe from the outside world and the outside world safe from them. The show has a very good cast of characters, and an amazing group of recurring characters. Any episode featuring two or more members of The Five will be a good episode.

The current season has been very disappointing, but the couple episodes based around The Five have been amazing and there is a good chance we will get a lot more of them coming up. Here's hoping. This show would have been at least top 30 after Season 2.

I also must mention that Emilie Ullerup is one of big TV crushes of recent years and thank this show for introducing me to her.

SPOILERS

All that said, the choice to kill the daughter made the show noticably worse, and I am finally being forced to accept that they aren't bringing her back. Kate is an awful replacement. The group has just lost the great chemistry that was there early on. And even Tesla and Druid can't completely fill the gap, as awesome as they are.

This is basically the turning point update for my list. From here on out we are talking great shows, 8/10 or better.

#41 Psych (2006-____)
Comedy, Crime
Mega Mana's Ranking:

A lot of people would probably consider this to be far too low a ranking for Psych. Two things go against it; I'm not a big fan of crime shows, the comedy started getting old in recent seasons. I loved this show early on, it was just hilarious, and Shawn and Gus are perfect together. Plus, Corbin Benson is awesome as the father. I can't really say that the plots or the characters have gone downhill in later seasons, its just that the show hasn't really changed in 6 seasons. Like, at all. After awhile Shawn's antics became less amusing and I started enjoying the show less. So here it is.

#40 Yu Yu Hakusho (1993-1996)
Anime, Shonen
Mega Mana's Ranking:

One of the first animes I ever saw, back when it aired on Cartoon Network along with Rouroni Kenshin. This is a classic shonen anime with good characters and a lot of great fights. That's really all that matters when you are talking a pure Shonen show like this.

I actually rewatched the Dark Tournament Saga in the last couple years and I still love it.

#39 NCIS (2003-____)
Crime
Mega Mana's Ranking:

NCIS really should be ranked higher, but the fact that it is a crime procedural keeps it down here. There are definitely cases of genre bias throughout this list (one of the most blatent of which will be next update).

This show has an awesome cast of characters, good comedy, great chemistry between the cast, and actually does a good job of making me care about the mysteries. This is just a truly high quality show.

9 seasons in and I still enjoy it. It may not be a "must see" for me each week, but if I am just looking for something to watch on TV, NCIS has a good chance of winning.

Quick Notable Mentions:
Space Cases (Firefly; NICK, N) - Jewel Staite's earlier space odyssey with Zack Taylor from MMPR. One of my favorites as a kid.
Little Bear (---, NICK, N) - I enjoyed Nick Jr. even when I got too old for it. Richard Scarry, Blue's Clues, Franklin, Gullah Gullah Island. The simple stylings of Little Bear was the best of the bunch.
Family Matters (Community; ABC, C) - It suffers from Steve Urkel and a lot of ABC Sitcom underused casts, but it has some good characters and episodes and a great theme song
Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? (---; PBS, O) - Do it, Rockapella! Difficult and challenging game with an almost impossible final round that was still a lot of fun and had great comedy.
Treme (---; HBO, D) - It's very slow and not a lot happens, but that's kid of a joy to it. It's just these people and their recovery and their lives and the music and history of New Orleans. It's a celebration of a city and that's a good thing.
Star Trek: The Next Generation (Firefly; CBS, D) - Somehow left it out of my original rankings. It would probably make the top ninety if I remembered it.

AND THE UNWATCHED MENTIONS
The Walking Dead - Saw pilot, enjoyed pilot, saw second episode, got bored.
The Shield - Seen some of first season, don't care for it.
Nurse Jackie - No thanks
United States of Tara - It's alright, but doesn't thrill me

Hey Jeff, is DS9 your favorite TV show?

Yeah. It was hanging out at the tail end of the top five for a while until very recently when I rewatched it. Thought nostalgia played a big part in recalling how good it was and the odd episode here and there that I'd seen again since the last time I watched much of it (2005 or so) was just good because I'd chosen it from a list.

But yeah, I rewatched it again at the beginning of the current year and it's just that damn good. It starts out like a somewhat shakier version of TNG when it got good but with more founding arcs involved but by the time the second season is over there are already several classics. And then it just gets more and more serialized as it goes on, culminating in an eight-parter at one point and a twelve-parter to finish off the series. For Trek that's pretty impressive; there were just that many ends that needed cutting.

The cast is brilliant with terrific chemistry.

The funniest part of all is that when BSG was on the air I thought for sure it was a better DS9 with more allowances for the dark and gritty stuff I so often enjoy. And while it's certainly true that BSG was the darker and the grittier of the pair (although DS9 got pretty damn surprisingly dark at times...) DS9 was just the better-made overall and hosted a much more satisfying finale.

BSG and DS9 have largely the same central production staff, you see. Ron Moore, Rene Echevarria, Bradley Thompson, David Weddle, the list goes on. You can definitely see a lot of rehashes in BSG and they're not from the old 1978 BSG, they're from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. But the relatively less convoluted storytelling of the Trek variant proved the better of the two quality-wise in my opinion.

You're definitely not alone but you need to get a bit more knee-deep in Trek fandom to find most of your kin. Joining the TrekBBS for example will no doubt locate a few folks with your opinion -- trouble is most of them think the Dominion War is complete filth so they're pretty off their rockers.

I can respect your opinion even if I don't agree with it. The Bajoran sociopolitical stuff is more home-hitting than the more black-and-white "orderly empire" of the Dominion and there's much more downtime across the cast.

I like the more "real" and grey plots of the early stuff. But the real reason is that the first few seasons were more character focused while the Dominion War was more plot focused. I really liked the focus being on the characters and their interactions. I liked just watching Quark run his bar and try and get around Odo (this was often my favorite part). I liked watching Bashir and Garak chat, or Bashir and O'Brien have their little rivalry. I liked watching the debates between Kiera and Sisko, or the family dynamics, or Kiera/Odo, or the often weird but great Dax/Sisco stuff.

I preferred watching the day to day operations of DS9 to the big war story.

I honestly haven't watched the later seasons of DS9 in a long time, and I just started getting season 3 through Netflix. We will see what I think now.

#38 Castle (2009-____)
Crime, Drama
Mega Mana's Ranking: 38

This is another show that should be higher but is hurt by being a crime show. Of course it gets a bit of a boost as well from having Nathan Fillion and making multiple Firefly references.

What makes castle great isn't the mysteries, its the characters. A surefire way to have a show I will like. Castle is a great and genuinely funny character, but even Nathan often can't help but have his scenes stolen by the exceptional minor characters in this show. Detectives and Bros Esposito and Ryan are awesome, the captain is the best I've ever seen (excluding Gibbs), and Castle's family often provide the highlights of the show and many of the best plots. Castle and his daughter are amazing together.

Everyone in this show has a good sense of humor, even Beckett. Plus, Beckett and Castle have great chemistry and their will they won't they relationship is probably the best handled I've seen since Mulder and Scully.

#37 Andromeda (2000-2005)
Sci-fi
Mega Mana's Ranking: Not on list

This is a show a lot of people (even fans) would be surprised to see this high, especially considering the ranking of other Gene Roddenberry shows. But I fell in love with this show (and Lexa Doig) very quickly, and even after the quality dropped in later seasons I still really enjoyed it. Kevin Sorbo is amazing as the captain, Harper is one of my all time favorite tech guys, Tyr is a solid fill of the Teal'c, Worf, etc role with some interesting characters choices, Rev was awesome, and Trance was a very fun character (until she became a mysterious god alien thing, which was still interesting). The character dynamics were interesting and fun to watch, the action scenes were great, there was that mix of action/comedy/drama that I love, and the whole show was just fun to watch. I don't care what anybody else thinks, I really like this show. Though I do fear watching it again since Nostalgia likely plays a roll in my memory of it. I can't believe its only been 6 years since this show ended.

#36 Red Dwarf (1988-1999)
Sci-fi, British Comedy
Mega Mana's Ranking: Not on list

Like Andromeda, this show receives a boost for being a good sci-fi. It also gets credit for being truly funny despite using a type of humor that I often don't enjoy. A truly bizarre and funny crew make every ludicrous adventure that much better. And even plot holes and time travel hijinks that would make The Doctor do a spit take can't keep me from loving it. This is just the epitome of a fun sci-fi show. It doesn't take itself seriously (at all) and just makes everything more enjoyable because of it.

This is also a show that gets a bit of a boost due to being something my highschool buddies and I watched together as they aired on PBS and then raced to get the DVDs as they released them. It might be the first series that I owned the complete run on DVD. Heck, my buddies and I even performed the music video/dream dance Tongue Tied for a variety show at our school.

Well, time to show some differences in my list and Mega Mana's.

#35 Supernatural (2005-____)
Sci-fi
Mega Mana's Ranking: 6

I loved the first couple seasons of this show. When it was just about a couple of brothers bonding while going about their monster of the week adventures. As the show became more serious and the "main" plot became more prominant I found myself enjoying it less. Then it became quite religious with Angels and Devils and I found I liked it even less. Cas was a great addition to the cast, but by that time Dean and Sam had lost the good natured banter and funny antics that I loved and become serious, brooding characters which I just didn't really like watching. And Cas didn't really lighten the mood.

The battles with the four horsemen left me extremely disappointed (honestly, they should have had that last until the end of the season and make Satan and Crowley another season). As the show went on I became less interested and after season 5 ended (and the show should have) I stopped watching completely. The only episode of Season 6 I have seen is the finale. That's right, even Mark Sheppard couldn't get me to watch, and that is saying something.

Also, I don't really love all the meta stuff. The inside jokes when they went to hollywood was funny. Adding fangirls, fanfic, conventions, and a fake series based on them was too much. The idea of going to a parallel "real world" sounds much better and honestly funny.

#34 Merlin (2008-____)
Fantasy, British
Mega Mana's Ranking: Not Ranked

A fun twist on the Arthurian legends that starts years before Arthur's reign as king begins. Heck, Morgana isn't even a bad guy until the latest season, and Mordred is an innocent little boy. This show really doesn't follow things accuratey, but who cares!

The show has a great sense of humor, interesting characters, good action, exciting plots, good chemistry between the cast. The Paendragon family is interesting to watch, Merlin's mentor is awesome, and Merlin and Arthur are great together. Too bad last season was a letdown and the Morgana heel turn was handled badly.

Oh, and it has Tony Head (better known as Giles in Buffy) as a main character.

#33 Angel (1999-2004)
Fantasy, Action
Mega Mana's Ranking: Not Ranked Yet (I assume)

Speaking of Buffy, it's time for the spin off. That's right the 2nd of 4 Joss Whedon shows on this list has appeared. Angel has a more serious attitude than Buffy does, especially after the first season. This makes it a better show for many people, but not me. Angel himself is better here than he ever was on Buffy (excluding when he was evil), Cordelia starts off the same character I loved, then they decided to hook her up with Angel and things went downhill. Doyle was amazing in every way but didn't last long. Gunn was fun. Wesley's development was great. Faith has a couple episodes that are among my favorite of either Buffy or Angel. Fred is annoying but Illyria is great. Wolfram and Hart are great villains.

Really the show does some amazing things and has some great moments. Biggest problem is that I will take Adam and the initiative over most the Season arcs of Angel. Seasons 3 and 4 were not good in my mind.

32. Burn Notice (2007-____)
Drama, Crime (according to IMDB. I would have gone with Action, Drama)
Mega Mana's Ranking: Not on List (yet?)

A fun and exciting show that was one of the big reasons for USA suddenly becoming a top TV station. The characters are great, the plots are interesting, the relationships are well done, and the voice over style is unique and works perfectly. This is a truly high quality show. Bruce Campbell also is a great comedy relief character while still fitting in to the more serious tone.

But for some reason I have found myself getting less interested in it. I can't even say why. And yet I have three weeks of it sitting unwatched on my DVR while I am instead watching Rizzoli and Isles and shows that aren't even making this list.

31. X-files (1993-2002)
Sci-fi, Mystery
Mega Mana's Ranking: Not on list (yet?)

This is a show I watched when I was too young to really appreciate and understand everything (or most things) in it, but I still loved it. Mulder and Scully were amazing, together and as individual characters. Their relationship is a lesson for any show that is trying to do a long term relationship between its main characters (which is a lot of them).

The mysteries were often very good, the overall season arcs could be very interesting, the villains were great, the Gunman were hilarious recurring characters. I love that how the show went full circle as far as Mulder and Scully, and even referenced it. The show just ran too long. Whenever it lost one of Mulder or Scully the quality plummeted, they just carried the show too much. That and the fact that it hasn't aged real well are the only reason it is down this low.

30. M*A*S*H (1972-1983)
Comedy, Drama
Mega Mana's Ranking: Not on list (yet?)

One of the all time greats. Whenever I do a TV ranking I always feel like I overrate M*A*S*H based on its reputation, then I see an episode and realize I am actually underrating it. Same thing is happening now, and this will likely move up the rankings.

Not only was this an amazing show at the time, but even now, almost 30 years after it first aired, it is still one of the best shows you will find on TV. It is truly funny, despite being set in the middle of one of the least funny events in American history. It does everything well. Plot, characters, drama, comedy, interactions, everything. This is a show that everyone and anyone can enjoy, and millions (possibly billions) of people have. I'm not sure any show will be able to match this shows 11 years of quality. And very few shows were able to deal with a changing cast as well as this one.

The biggest thing against it is probably that I have seen episodes so sporadically and out of order, and that it is a show that has always just been "one of those shows on sindication" for me.

I can't believe none of these shows are on your list yet Mana.

Maniac confirmed for ridiculously similar taste to Jeff Zero.

All of those shows except Merlin (which is simply because I haven't watched it) would be on my list.

You should watch Merlin, its a good show.

And I started this because I felt Mana and I typically have very similar taste (at least in Joss Whedon and movies) so its great to find another person. Especially since it turns out that Mana and I disagree a lot.

I'd consider doing a topic for MY top 100 TV shows, but my rankings would be embarrassing.

Almost ALL Nickelodeon/Cartoon Network shows.

No Firefly, no X-Files, no Buffy, no House, barely any old school stuff, no popular sitcoms... my system is that basically I rank my shows based on how much I liked them at the time when I REALLY liked them, so shows like Sesame Street would be way up there too.

Do it anyway if you want to, Ry. I'd have very little (if any) common ground with you but I'd still read it.

#29 Royal Pains (2009-____)
Comedy, Medical
Mega Mana's Ranking: Not on list

Man, this list might actually make someone think I like procedurals rather than there just being a few exceptions, usually because they are funny. This is one of those. It is a funny, charming, show with a very good cast of charaters. This is the show that really set USA down as one of my favorite stations. The station wants to focus on great characters and this show does just that. Hank is basically a medical Macguyver, and honestly the medical stuff is almost always secondary to what is going on with the main cast. This is a show about people not sickness.

Another big plus for me is that it avoids blood and gore 99% of the time. I am not good with that stuff and it is a reason why I can never watch shows like ER or CSI. Even Supernatural is way too much for me sometimes.

#28 The West Wing (1999-2006)
Drama
Mega Mana's Ranking: 41

Bartlett is the greatest president in the history of TV. Love him. And his awesome staff. And that great fast paced Sorkin dialogue. This show also has a surprisingly good sense of humor. Not to mention an exceptional cast. This show has a tendency to make me hate real life politicians even more.

It goes downhill in the last season, but it is still solid and the early seasons more than make up for it.

Seriously though, just watch the pilot. The opening is perfect and President Bartlett's entrance might be the best main character intro ever. So good! I haven't watched this show in a few years but I can still distinctly remember and even recite a number of the great scenes. Bartlett's entrance, his smackdown on that annoying reporter, the butterball hotline, so many classic moments.

My top ten list would be pretty laughable. I mean I like the shows, don't get me wrong, but I just haven't seen enough and almost half of them would wind up being Gundam-related.
