As somebody who refuses a plastic bag because i either have my own or its a few items i can carry, this is good. plastic bags don't degrade very quickly and i assume most are used once and then thrown out and this prevents landfills from being bombarded with plastic bags and them littering our fields and waterways.

But man, the people who NEED them for their cat/dog shit are going to be so insufferable. There are no other solutions to clean their pets mess outside of free plastic bags....

This is going to be a rough few months in the retail world in my neck of the woods only because some people just won't be able to handle it.

Uh, there are products available for this express purpose. Anyone who can't afford to buy a roll of disposal bags shouldn't be allowed to own pets tbh. How can they afford to feed a pet if they can't afford to clean up after it?

They actually want to shovel up a shopping plastic bag up fully with their pets excrement?

The baggies intended for it are small for a reason...

No. These people save their plastic bags from grocery store trips and reuse them for their dogs poop or cats litter. They don't fill them up they use them once and throw them out.

All this means is pet owners are going to have to purchase actual bags for their pets waste instead of having readily available free plastic bags.

I'd imagine using a plastic bag twice, once to carry groceries and once for pet litter, still isn't a super efficient use of them, even if it is better than just being used for grocery.

Plastics can take anywhere from 20-600+ years to degrade, which I feel like a lot of people don't realize or care because that's the main reason i don't like 'em.

I don't think it is. The people who reuse their plastic bags will just have to find a different solution.

Working in retail I've seen people get a plastic bag they presumably didn't want for their one item or whatever and just throw the bag away in the garbage as soon as they leave the store. I'd imagine for everybody who reuses them one time for garbage or pet litter doesn't eclipse the people who use them once total and throw them out.

I don't know for certain. I imagine it is that stores and businesses will be banned from using them for customers purchases for free. you might need to pay 5 or 10c per bag, or they will be banned altogether and you must use paper or anything else.

I don't know how the finer details work, but no more packing your items in plastic for free by default at least.

FTFY. The fact that other products exist specifically for this purpose means not all cat and dog owners are relying on grocery bags.

One of the chains near us did this a year or two ago. No plastic bags at all and you have to pay 5 cents for a paper bag. We've been using reusable bags for a while now, so no real issue for us, but I haven't really heard anyone complaining while I've been there either.

I spend $2 for a box of 100 fold top sandwich baggies. Lasts 2-3 months with two cats. Sure, it's more expensive than "free," but not by enough to genuinely worry about.

Im glad my city still has plastic bags. That said, I reused mine quite often. I dont ever really use paper. They tear too easily for me. Plus, even the slightest tear can cause massive problems (at least when Ive used it) They also wouldnt really work well with what I use the plastic ones for

I do have some of the reusable bags from the store. But I almost never have them. They are usually in the house wherever I put them after removing groceries. And I sometimes forget them when heading to the store. Plus, many trips are spontaneous, or when Im on the way from somewhere else

Shrek posted...
but you don't seem to realize that whatever they use as a replacement is still going to be a plastic bag.

This is probably true. The ones who were using the free plastic bags are probably just going to buy the cheap plastic poop bags. I guess they are smaller, but still plastic

That's really easy to fix. Keep them in your car when you aren't using them. After you empty them, hang them on your doorknob so you remember to bring them out to the car the next time you head out. If you're driving to most places where you might need a bag anyway, there's really no reason not to have a reusable one with you.

Id definitely lose them on the doorknob. I have a cat and a dog who both need to constantly mess with everything. They are the reason I cant find some of them now. Or why some are torn. Though, tbf, I even forget them in the car when I do go to the store. Either way, its not a big deal since my store still offers plastic bags, and I like having them

Plastic bags were banned in my area about 2 years ago. I used to use them for household garbage bags. Now I have to buy plastic bags to use as garbage bags.

I get that it's a overall good thing to ban them, but it's felt more like a punishment for those of us that used them responsibly, and has no effect on people that used to just throw them away in bulk or litter them.

Ive done that myself. Where they were perfect for the little trash cans. In the end, whether I use the bags from the store or buy them, they still end up being a plastic bag, I guess

I'm sure you could figure out something that would leave them in an accessible, easily-remembered location that also kept them safe from meddling quadrupeds. It's not that hard to develop the habit of keeping bags around. You just have to actually put a modicum of effort into doing so instead of just sticking to the status quo of making unnecessary garbage.

Maybe. If I tried Then again, I left my wallet on the counter once so Id remember it, and took forever looking for it So, maybe not Maybe it would be different if I needed to use them, or even wanted to And I do keep bags around. Theyre just mostly plastic bags and the occasional backpack. And my DND messenger bag

My mom is practically a crazy car lady. She will easily fill a grocery bag with cat litter. It's the only reason we keep them

Me personally I've had to have my receipt checked many times going out of Walmart cause they find it odd I don't typically use bags. Bags of any kind. I go to the store like every few days and only buy a little.

My drinks for work I keep in the trunk. I'll pull one out the day before to put in the fridge bur I can be forgetful so if I forget to pack it for work I still got some in the trunk. Won't be cold but I'll have it. Everything else I can typically manage to carry in the house in just one or two trips despite no bags

I spent two years in a different city a year back - I shopped on my bike with a backpack. To be fair, pretty goddamn annoying when you have to go every 2nd day since milk etc takes up room. Still, it's a lot more doable if you get saddle bags and whatnot. But it's full dedication to bike dorkdom.

Are you/him/other people putting bags in their cat litter boxes???? Or using bags to scoop shit out instead of the scoop???? Are you leaving the cat litter dirty enough that you need a bag in it? That would smell fucking disgusting. I have taken care of cats. You scoop the shit and clumped piss out daily and replace the litter every few weeks or once a month. I am not sure where a bag enters the equation and nobody I know with a cat uses a bag.

In a separate fully sealed smallish garbage can, yes? Also, that blows away Rev's weird comment about waste disposal bags not being big enough, if you chose to do this. Those little poop bags are plenty big enough, you can pick up big fat dog shits with those.
