That was always a huge no no when I worked armed security. If the threat is leaving, let them leave. If they stole some shit, just put it in the report. But do not ever pursue anyone leaving the property.

A Walgreens team leader shot 24-year-old Travonsha Ferguson in the store's parking lot on Wednesday evening after he followed her out of the store when he was tipped off to the alleged shoplifting, Nashville police said in a news statement.

Another employee told Boyd two women were allegedly shoplifting cosmetics from the store, police said. He began recording the women on his cell phone as they placed items in a shopping cart and a large shoulder bag, police said, and he later followed the women to the car in the parking lot as they began to place items into the car's trunk.

As he approached the rear of the car, one of the women pulled out a can of mace and sprayed as Boyd started shooting, according to police.

There is a pretty obvious distinction between events when the women were still just leaving with the stolen goods and after one of the women decided to attack him. I find it hard to believe that you cant wrap your head around the level of fear involved changing after that.

Punishment fits the crime.

I'm not ignoring it. I heard it. It doesn't matter. He had no place following them to their car, nor did he have any place being armed while doing so. They rightfully defended themselves. He escalated further.

See, what is supposed to happen here is that the manager documents the incident, noting details such as shoplifter descriptions, what was taken, etc. and call the police to file a report. But instead what happened was...

Manager violates company policy and follows shoplifter out to her vehicle
Shoplifter uses mace on creepy guy following her
Manager uses deadly force on a pregnant woman

I do agree that he should get charges but I very much disagree that him filming them committing their crime was escalation or aggression justifying physical retaliation. The women were not defending themselves, there was nothing to be defending themselves from.

He obviously violated company policy, and was already fired for it, but that has nothing to do with the law. Him following them to the parking lot to continue recording their crime as evidence does not justify them attacking him and its pretty bonkers that people would think so, even to the point of trying to twist him going out as creepy or aggressive or whatever else.
