Democrats fall flat with Latinx language
Why are we using a word that is preferred by only 2 percent, but offends as many as 40 percent of those voters we want to win? said one pollster.

Just going off my personal experience, the only people I've known who had any remotely positive opinion of the term "Latinx" where white women and assimilated diaspora with practically no connections to their original culture.

Why is it offensive to literally anyone at all though
I could imagine some would feel like outside forces are trying to force a descriptor on them they didn't choose, or it's sort of corruption of their language wounding their sensibilities.

Also maybe they rightly think it sounds really stupid and being called something stupid is offensive to them.

I dunno, just some thoughts.

The Hispanic people I've talked to about it think it's stupid af because literally nobody asked for this distinction and it's seen as yet another example of white people creating and fixing a "problem" that never existed so we can pat ourselves on the back for being so woke.

the term was not invented by white people. Funny, because nobody I've seen who uses latinx (all of whom in my experience are themselves part of that community, and many of them not even from the mainland US) pushes it as a prescriptivist term they demand others use, but the people who cry that "They're telling us how to speak!" love telling others not to use the term.

Not upset at all. I just think it's a phenomenally stupid topic whenever it comes up on CE, because so many people here have asinine prescriptivist views about language and don't even know the background of the term they're so upset by

This.

It was a LGBT Latino invention to degender the language.

Liberals are just deferring to LGBT Latinos who think this is a sensitive compromise.

It's white people who can't speak Spanish telling South/Central/Mexican American immigrants how to speak their own language & what to call themselves.

It's not like they haven't done it before.

Ig this is what always bothered me.

Its like wanting to change the word boy or girl. Latino specifically refers to a guy (or a group with guy(s)).

I dont see why there would need to be a new term created.

one thing - just because a small minority of people might use it, it doesn't invalidate it.

it's still a relatively new term that grew from the desire of others to have a classification that was more inclusive, and you're going to have some pushback from older, prevailing attitudes.

it's not like we haven't seen similar struggles in English speaking areas, and that those struggles don't still exist.

Two percent of hispanics approve of it. That means more LGBT hispanics disapprove of it than approve.

So who precisely is this for? And why should the wishes 98% of hispanics be ignored when there is already an acceptable nongendered term available to them?

like I said, it's still a relatively new term, that's meant to "degender" some of the language as others have posted. and it's not even something that all LGBTQ+ people might feel is applicable to them, but mostly those who don't conform to gender norms.

but even if it stayed at having 2% support (or less), it doesn't mean that it shouldn't exist; people can just not use it if they don't want to.

also, I don't get what you get about the "wishes of the 98%". is language a democracy, where people can be silenced because the majority doesn't like that they're saying?

This is what I've heard from my friends as well. I've also heard most prefer the term Latine instead, since it makes sense in the actual language and still accomplishes the goal of making words less gendered than necessary.

If you're goal is inclusion and kindness, why y'all gotta be so damn mean?

Nobody would care if the term was available, but it's such people insisting on it that people are turned off by.

Elites call Hispanics snowflakes for wanting to be called Hispanics and then wonder why they dislike them? It's pretty ridiculous.
