While this is true, this is mostly because people see a degree and go "oh ok this person is capable of finishing some things they start". Not because it is particularly useful in educating people.

Having a college degree is a good way to show you deserve to move past certain low-effort people filtration systems. But considering how much it costs, I remain unconvinced it's a good value proposition.

Most apprenticeships and trade schools are probably way better in the value department.

I only know people from STEM, law or medical fields ever use it

Psych? Nah
History? Lol
Art? You were doomed anyway
Coms? A 13 year will school you
Business? You use it because every business does business but you don't really need it
Physical Ed? Everyone either is fat or knows how to do everything

For what its worth, a solid amount of the non-4 year degree jobs out there worth getting in terms of a career still require a combo of certs/random juco courses/trade schooling plus a decent build up of pertinent years of experience on the job before you can feel comfortable.

college is a scam.

But employers are in cahoots with the education industrial complex and they make college degrees mandatory for fucking everything, and then even in some very specific fields.

Want to shine shoes? Please have a bachelor's in physics so you can understand the physics involved in the friction generated by the shoe shining. Please have a 5 year internship at a local shoe shining stand, and come with 2 recommendations and a 750+ credit score. Salary is $4.25 an hour.

Bill Maher's whole schtick is "I'm a pompous asshole who is going to double down rather than get off my high horse". Its both the reason people like him AND the reason people hate him.

Also, as someone in a STEM field, there are plenty of stem fields that you are never getting a job in with just a 4 year undergrad degree. Its biggest value is to be smug towards kids who went to school for non-STEM things.

He's not wrong. The culture surrounding universities in this country is kind of fucked up, and a lot of aspects of it are a scam/racket. I mean good god, just look at the text book industry

I hate how the education industry has become such a scam. You should be able to get those jobs with a STEM degree. But they would rather fluff the curriculum and have you get the skills and meet the requirements on your own by getting a masters, a PhD and then a bunch of certifications. Don't forget the certifications expire and you need to keep taking them, it's literally a never ending scam.

Don't forget in a lot of places, a Ph. D can actually hurt your chances of getting a job, not help. Because a Ph. D means your knowledge can be too focused, so a PhD is usually a mistake unless you want to go into academia (good luck)

True. Business, Stem and law are the worthwhile degrees.

Anyway, liberal arts degrees require a PHD, and you have to want to be a professor to make a living, which is tough enough as it is having enough teaching jobs in uni out there.

Anyway, I speak from experience that liberal arts degrees are, for the most part worthless, unless you really work hard and want to be a teacher. I got a BA in anthropology, and my counselors said my options were working for the government, which I got none into. I then went to biotech after completing a program in community college and haven't looked back, and making decent money.

wish I could have told my past self to study harder in the sciences as an undergrad I guess.. it go to biotech right after graduating with my BA

College is a scam in the sense that student loans and the American standard of getting its citizens into debt early on and making them work it off for the next 30 years is shitty, but the benefits of tertiary education - for your career, personality and worldview - are incredible and potentially life-changing.

Student loans are a scam, college - as in an actual academic institution, not a for-profit shithole - is great. Confuse the two, and you risk furthering the political divide in America.

Master's? I mean, it's sort of ok, but, not qualified enough or enough experienced.
PhD? Overqualified!

One of his points about free college is that people who arent going are stuck paying for people who are, which is perfectly valid. It IS funny that Fox News uses the same technique as this topic, they cherry pick a sound byte and make it appear as if Maher is now on their team.

The idea is that if you go to college you're supposed to be able to get a decent job. But that is no longer the case, and even worse, what they teach you in college won't even prepare you for most jobs, so why is it a thing then?

University systems have never been at all connected with any job market other than higher education.

Universities are about education, and American culture has bastardized that.
