Do you think Mimi deserves a second chance?

18 y/o Jimmy Galligan from Virginia says he has NO REGRETS on sharing a video of a blonde cheerleader classmate 19 y/o Mimi Groves after she said the N-WORD when she was 15 and said "I can drive, n-word" in which the embarrassing clip forced her to WITHDRAW from her dream college and destroyed her life!!

He said he was in history class at Heritage High School last year when he got a text from a friend that showed then 15 y/o Mimi Groves using the slur in a 3 second snapchat clip

He flagged the clip to teachers and admins but they did not do anything so after feeling frustrated, he held onto teh clip until he thought it was the right time to post it...and June of this year was that time after graduation and the George Floyd protests was when he did

He said "I wanted to get her where she would understand the severity of that word. If i never posted that video, nothing would have happened. I'm going ot remind myself, you started something. You taught someone a lesson"

The video originally circulatd among some students there but it didn't cause much stir as it was used regularly in the classrooms and hallways.

Mimi was a championship winning cheerleader who wanted to go to the University of Tennessee and was on a cheer team that reigned national champions and was accepted in May

But after the fallout of the George Floyd shooting, she made a public post on instagram to protest, sign the petition, rally and do something to help Black Lives Matter movement

One person who she didn't know posted "you have the audacity to post this, after saying the n-word"

Her confusion quickly turned to panic as friends began calling her and telling her what was being posted

That was when Galligan released teh video from 4 years ago and her world began to crumble

People demanded the University of Tennessee rescind their admission as teens across america were calling each other out their past racist behaviour a

Within 2 days, she was kicked off the team and was forced to withdraw from UT under pressure from admission officials who received hundreds of emails and phone calls

An official said "They're angry and they want to see action". The University of Tennessee has received several reports of racist remarks and actions on social media by past, prsent and future members of our community"

On Wednesday, they made the decision to revoke her admision

In Groves case which occurred in one of the nation's WEALTHIEST school districts, students said racism had been long tolerated there and overlooked

Muna Barry said "It was just always very uncomfortable beign black in the classroom"

Galligan is bi-racial black/white and said he too was mocked by white classmates as one of his peers made threatening comments about muslims as well

A report last year showed the school district documented a pattern of school leaders ignoring racial slurs

Groves said at the time she didn't know the severity of that word at the time or the history and context behind it because she was so young and said she isn't using it as an excuse and said "It disgusts me that those words would ever come out of my mouth. How can convince somebody that has never met you and the only thing they've ever seen of you is that 3 second clip"

Marsha Groves, her mother said the whole family is now suffering cause of her daughter's actions as it damaged their reputation

Marsha says her daughter is targeted by a "mob" on social media for a mistake she made as an adolescent and said they rushed to judgement and it's going to affect her for the rest of her life

She is now doing online classes at a community college while Calligan is a freshman at Vanguard

Groves said "I've learned how quickly social media can take something they know very little about, twist the truth and potentially ruin somebody's life"

The 2 were ironically FRIENDS at one point but never spoken since

One her friends who is black defended Groves and said "We're supposed to educate people, not ruin their lives because you want to feel a sense of empowerment"

Do you think Mimi deserves another chance?

Yeah this. It wasn't teaching her a lesson. It was a holier-than-thou-spiteful act.

He could have confronted her with that and told her why it was wrong. Now had she responded with a racist insult or ignored him or whatever else then fine, release the video.

But not even attempting to educate her? And then saying you taught her a lesson? Nah, not how it works.

I think the people saying fair next didnt read the whole story

She was fighting alongside Black Lives Matter when he released the video

This was years ago and she apparently had grown since then. She had gone from being a racist to fighting for racial equality. I have never said thr n word in my life and I think you shouldn't say it. But I also don't think a life should be ruined over saying it 1 time as a kid and then stopping being a racist

It seems like that whole area/school was a toxic environment. She should've had a proper callout back when she said it than "incubating" it for years. 3-4 years later, she clearly changed from what I read and the initial incident was from ignorance/impulse from being young.

On one hand, maybe she had changed for the better.

On the other hand - she shouldn't have said the word in the first place, the video was taken to school administrators at the time and they did nothing, and I would imagine that it would be very frustrating to see a popular girl who's never faced consequences for racist wrongdoings using her platform to do a full 180 and capitalise on a movement that her prior behavior is counter to.

Even if her intentions were good, I feel like it would have felt cheap, like she was clout-chasing with no actual conviction or solidarity with black people considering how she used slurs for them as a trendy saying.

She was 15, an age where you understand the concept of racism, and she used a racist word in a video that she sent out to other people as a celebration of her being allowed to drive. This video was taken to school administrators by a black student who was uncomfortable that this cheerleader was using racial slurs, and they did nothing about it. Years later, the same student who threw racial slurs around posted about George Floyd and how dangerous it is to be black in America and how much prejudice they face, despite her prior actions contributing to the racist culture that disenfranchises black people. So the same guy who saw her get off scot free last time posted video of her saying a racial slur.

She didn't face consequences at the time, and now she is. She's still gonna get a college education, and she was called on something justified. I have no sympathy for her.

Also, her apology where she goes "I can't believe those hateful things came out of my mouth" before going on to look down on people for "judging her for a 3 second video clip despite having never met her" is such an insincere attitude. If she was really cut up about this, she would own up to it, say that she's genuinely changed for the better and working for more positive outcomes, and say sorry.

Like, she thinks she's in the right by saying "it's a three second clip that's being taken out of context, we should all love and support each other instead of tearing each other down like this online hate mob is doing!" - but that three second clip is of her saying the n-word. She doesn't get to play the victim here, because she should have known better and people aren't wrong to be calling her out for her hypocrisy.

The starting point of a good apology would be something like "I said the word as a teenager, it was wrong, and I'm sorry. I've worked towards bettering myself, and I genuinely hope to further causes that empower the disenfranchised like BLM in the wake of the George Floyd death". The fact that she's going "why is everyone being so mean to me over a 3 second clip?" scans as her just being sorry she got caught, and the language she does use in regards to the language she used - "I can't believe the hateful things that came out of my mouth" - is a bunch of cop-out faux-woke horseshit. She knew what she was saying.

There is a large portion of Western society that refuses to take any responsiblity at all for their words/actions. Society allows this to continue. If this person was in a different demographic, the repercussions would be much harsher.

All seems so stupid. Yeah, she said the n-word. She was also 15, an age where people expect you to do and say stupid shit from time to time. Did it not cross anyone's mind that she might have matured out of that mentality over the last few years? Nah, she said the bad word once years ago, so she must be a terrible person forever.

The worst part is the guy patting himself on the back like he just took down a klan member or some shit. "If I never posted that video, nothing would have changed." Yeah, a normal person would've got to keep going to that school. How horrible.

It is funny how people on here are basically calling for her life to be ruined over saying a word when she was young. However when a young person that is 15 kills someone those same people say that person is too young to have their life ruined by going to prison.
