I don't necessarily blame her or WANT her punished, but I also wasn't in a school where the n-word was used regularly.

Why SHOULD he care that she's a better person now? That's the thing with people, they think because they change their ways they are entitled to forgiveness. You're not. The damage you caused can be permanent and scarring, you only get to move on if everyone lets you.

At the end of the day, her problem was caused by her and the school. All he did was release something she actually said. If this was addressed earlier, maybe we wouldn't be in this situation. She said the word. She suffered the consequences.

If this makes her a worse person in the future, then she's actually dumb as bricks.

Yeah, idk what to say here. Saying a racial slur in a joking sort of way sounds like something a 15 year old could do. The fact that she supported the BLM movement a few years later makes it sound like she matured. Doesn't sound like a good use of cancel culture.

Thats kind of fucked up that you just decided to use homophobic slurs and you justified it by saying that everyone was doing it!

So you dont believe in rehabilitation for people in prison either? Anyone who commits a crime should just be executed cause they cant change and will always be a murderer/rapist/whatever?

You're the worst kind of person.

You're the worst kind of person.

Your strawman falls on deaf ears.

If you wrong me, I don't have to forgive you ever. He has no responsibility to not release her bad behavior. Your dues to the government are your own. If you then run for a position of power, and I post that you did something bad to me 6 years ago, that's my right. The fact that you're a better person now is irrelevant. If people look at you differently now, that's between them and you, specifically because I didn't MAKE you do the bad thing.

I've done shitty things to people in my life, and some of them still hate me. If they wanted to they could reveal that I did it to them, and at least some fraction of my friends would hate my guts. But it's not their fault for revealing it, it's MY fault for doing it. Their reason for doing it only matters in the sense of what kind of person they are. But people are shifting the blame from her for saying something stupid to the person revealing it, because the consequences are felt by her. This ignores the fact that she contributed to a culture that hurt the black kid throughout high school.

Lets say he did it because he wanted to hook up with her and she turned him down. One of the worst case scenarios. That would make him a bad person, but it would still be her fault because she's still suffering because of an action she did herself with no prompting.

Some people pay for the mistakes they make. Some people pay more than others, because of circumstance, or just bad luck. She'll pull through.

Lots of people going "everyone's done shit like that in their lives!" itt - like dude, if you're talking about publically using racial slurs as a shithead kid, your experiences aren't universal. She shouldn't have gotten away with it at the time, and I'm not upset that she has to take accountability for it now.

The main point of contention for me is that her behavior was known to authority figures at the time, and she got off scot free. That's significant, because unless they were around shithead adults who found racism acceptable, I imagine most people saying that this is standard teenage behavior would have gotten a slap upside the head or an appropriately negative response from an authority figure when they're caught out being a racist dipshit.

This girl didn't - she used a racial slur to be trendy, and despite there being people who were in a position to set her straight who knew about it, nobody did anything about it.

I feel like it would be jarring to see someone who has a reputation for using racial slurs milk a bunch of anti-racist activism posts for social media clout, and while people do change and grow in 4 years, some people don't. We have as much evidence for her becoming a better person as we do for her being a hypocrite who did this for clout.

I think this whole "we've all done bad shit as kids!" talking point is being made in bad faith, and people who are honestly arguing for this being an innocent teenage gaffe are either telling on themselves more than they maybe realise or they realise just how telling their statements are. Either way - I think that the people who were maligned by her prior behavior are right to not be happy with what she said, especially if the slur she used is one that's levelled against them for their race. And as petty as it might be, I don't blame the guy for leaking the video in response to a bunch of dumb social media posturing that her actions don't back up.

Punishing her now is pretty stupid though. Every teen says something stupid, and should have been punished back then. As they grow up and change over the years and doesnt do that anymore, why the fuck waste time and effort to punish her now?

If she's committed to higher education, she'll be able to attend another college and get her degree. What this changes is that she won't be getting it from the University of Tennessee.

Her life is hardly ruined by this. Her family seems to support her, and she's young enough that she can start again. She literally has her entire future ahead of her.

Hopefully the guy gets kicked out of school too. Holding onto this video for years is childish and petty, especially when you know she marched alongside BLM. I would hope that everyone in here saying fair, next hasnt said anything even slightly questionable at any point in their lives. Doesnt matter if youve grown or changed, you should be punished too, I suppose.

I wouldn't punish her, but it's not my decision. Nor is it yours. Your argument is people shouldn't be mad at her because she grew up, and I'm like "that's not how it works". Because really at the end of the day, that's what it is. She's not being punished officially, she's getting backlash because she did something dumb.

It actually costs no time whatsoever. Taking her in is what causes the headache because she brings heat.

That's the thing. The kid holding on to the video should've been mad and taking action against the local authorities he showed the video to, not the fellow 15 year old.

Why not both?
