How many pull ups can you do?

This has been a common topic in the weightlifting topic so i am curious as to how the rest of the board fares with them

For the strong folk doing weighted pull ups it can just be based off what you would consider your working weight. I know everyone is different, so whatever weight feels like applies to you in this highly scientific poll

25 is just wild to me. No matter how strong ive gotten i always seem to cap around 18-20. And the confusing part was i could be adding 15-25 pounds and could still bang out 20 but even with no weight my body wouldnt go any further

Nowadays im sitting at around 14-15 body weight and 6-10 with added weight of 25 to 45

After attempting even one you'd probably have to pull me up off the gym floor.

With a little effort and patience you might surprise yourself and get to where you can do some!

Probably around 10-12...Haven't been to the gym a lot lately but still in good shape, and exercising at home. In my peak I could easily do 20+, doing 8 reps with a 45LB weight was the final set for weighted pullups.

Just did 18 on my door bar, but that has an easy narrow grip and comfortable pads. With a wider grip (wider = harder) on a less comfortable bar, maybe a dozen max.

Effort how? Most lat exercises I've seen you need equipment for. What can you do with just weights if you can't do pullups?

I tried at one point trying to effectively use a weight balanced by using my legs to help but it didn't work very well

I had literally never been able to do a pull up ever, but the last time I tried I somehow managed to do three. I haven't really exercised in quite a while though, so I wouldn't be surprised if I'm back down to zero now.

Sorry i also missed the part saying with just weights. You can do plenty of lat work with weights. Rows, pullovers, also pull ups use biceps a bit too so any sort of curls

I always get confused

are pullups the ones where your arms are in front of you with your palms facing inwards, or are they the ones with your arms extended sideways, with your palms facing outwards?

---
You did indeed stab me in the back. However, you are only level one, whilst I am level 50. That means I should remain uninjured.

Thanks for the clarification

At least for me, as a now sedentary guy due to covid, pull-ups are waaaaaaay more challenging than chin-ups

I can do maybe 6 pull-ups if i do them as my first exercise, but i can do significantly more than double that of chin-ups

Yeah i always start my pull days (exercises with pulling movements that target the back/biceps for those who dont know) with pull ups as they are the best back exercise in my opinion and the amount you can do drops off like a motherfucker after even a litter exertion

When I was in peak shape, I could do...3/4ths of one and could also jump almost to the rim of a basketball hoop.

I was actually in pretty good shape at that time too, thin, fast, good cardio...just didn't have the strength yet. I lost like 30 pounds and was building up muscle. It felt so good to be able to lift more and more weight with each passing month.

Then I made a bad decision, which took me away from the gym and that was that, pretty sure I put those 30 pounds back on.

I miss feeling that good TBH

Nice to see that more than half of board 8 can do more than 1 pull up! And for the four who can do 1, thats awesome! And for those who cant, you definitely can with some time and for those who dont care thats great too!

i find this too, but to be fair, i've extensively trained overhand pullups and barely done underhand chinups

In my very limited and not-at-all-scientific opinion, people who are good at both are better at pull-ups, but people struggling to do either are more likely to complete a chin-up.

You aren't too far off in a sense.

Chin-ups require more power from the biceps compared to the pull-up, which for the most part is all back muscle. The everyday normal person probably gets more use out of their bicep compared to their lats and rhomboids.
