Kingdom Hearts 1, 2, Birth By Sleep and Dream Drop Distance are the most important when it comes to playing Kingdom Hearts 3 and understanding the story. I found the Kingdom Hearts 3 catch-up to be very brief. You can even get a black code mode and very difficult boss fights via the DLC. Good look button mashing through those. As for the story? It's simple in this game providing you've played the others.
