People always talk about the big, fancy features of video games being applied to real life (Save Points, Extra Lives, Cheat Codes, Fast-Travel, New Game+, etc.), but what about some of the smaller but still useful features instead?

Details:

Minimap: When outdoors, shows you a topographical map of your immediate surroundings (~20m radius) from a top-down perspective. When indoors, shows you a 3D image of the building you are in with a dot indicating your current position. In buildings where you do not have access to all rooms, only areas you have visited will be visible.

Objective Marker: An always visible marker showing you where you need to go next for your current quest/sidequest. Does not show travel routes, only one is visible at a time. Toggleable.

Quest Log: Provides an auto-updating summary of any tasks/quests you've been assigned, including timelines and objectives (if known).

Auto-Sorting Inventories: Any backpack/purse/dresser/other container automatically sorts its contents. Whenever you wish to withdraw something, it instantly floats to the top (downside: you cannot stuff more items into said container than it was designed to carry).

Durability Indicator: Any item can be examined to show its durability and (if applicable) how many uses it has remaining until it breaks.

Text-boxes and conversations: Visible subtitles show for anyone you are talking to. If the person you are talking to is important to your life, their name will also be visible (really important people will also get a small portrait of their face next to their text). The conversation does not proceed until you are ready for it to. (downside: you cannot leave a conversation or do anything else until you either conclude it or cancel out of it).

Quest-Giver Markers: A small marker will appear above anyone for whom you can perform jobs or tasks for money or other rewards.

Faction points: Actions you undertake give you faction points towards individuals and groups that you know. You may examine your faction points at any time (you cannot examine the faction points of other people).

Volume control: You can modify the volume of "Music", "Voices", and "Other Sounds" freely, including muting them altogether (voices will be subtitled should you choose to mute them). Note that this will only affect your ability to hear these things; other people will be unaffected.

Instant Costume Changes: You can swap between any sets of clothes you are carrying anywhere, instantly.

None of the above.

If anything, the one thing from real life I'd want would be save-scumming, with persistent memory. So when you fuck something up you can rewind and do it again. And again. And again.

Yeah, but save points are one of those big features that I'm explicitly discounting.

Carrying meaning on my person? Unless I was constantly walking with a backpack, that's not too convenient.

idk, right now I think it's between the minimap and autosort. Does the minimap show when people and larger animals are nearby?

I mean, one of the things you can do in video games is fit 999 pieces of clothes in one dresser.

But I think that one and Volume Control are the most all around useful ones to pick.

This actually sounds interesting. Might give one plenty of time to think about a proper response which is potentially beneficial.

True, but that would make it plainly the best choice if you could do that. I'm thinking a sort of Diablo-style inventory screen, or Animal Crossing, or something like that.

The one thing I would love about this is that because of my job I talk to a lot of ESL people, some of whom have very thick accents and are difficult to understand on the phone. The subtitles thing would be a lifesaver in those cases.

Well a minimap... I kind of already have that on my smartphone.

Quest objectives would be useful; especially for finding things like keys.

Quest Log... Not really. I mean, work tends to be pretty clear as to what to do.

Auto-sort would be wonderful.

Durability... huh? I don't make it a habit to take damage every day.

Textboxes... Would allow me to always hear people, especially in crowds, and possibly skip boring conversations!

Quest-giver markers: I.... Don't think this would be too useful.

Faction points: Kind of meaningless.

Volume: Mute: Baby

Instant costume change: Could be funny, but not much value otherwise.

I'd say textboxes since it would be used the most and could speed up conversations. Plus, if I'm REALLY mean, I could start a conversation with someone then just... not advance the conversation! MWAHAHAHA! Trapped!
