Got to thinking about it. I had forgotten that I was really late to the game on melee. I didn't buy it until around 2004 or 2005. And I'd already played FE7 for gba by that point. I wasn't considering that melee was out a couple years before FE7.

Voted nay but on second thought yay might actually be the right answer.

I mean the first Fire Emblem game I played did come out after Melee, but I swore I'd heard of it before then, and I didn't play it because of Melee either. So it's hard to be sure, really.

No. I learned about it from gaming magazines talking up the series when they released a game on the GBA (I think). I played some, never figured out how to game the system, and gave up on it.

I wish the poll had more choices so we could know how many of the "Nay" voters had heard of Fire Emblem before Melee came out versus how many just didn't play Smash until after FE started getting releases outside Japan. I didn't even know there was an English-language following for FE before Melee.

I don't know about a following, but it was possible to emulate some of the SNES games, which is what I did. back then I was basically obsessed with SNES games and specifically RPGs. it got to the point where I just started playing games with japanese releases, whether I could find a good translation or not, simply because I had played almost every english released game I was already interested in.

Which is kinda awkward for me because, as it turns out, the first game I ever played was very likely Star Fox on SNES. Not that I remember it, obviously.

I'm not sure if I also saw the promotional Star Fox video as a kid too or not. My cousin might have showed it to me, but I was too busy being into PlayStation at the time.

In other words, it's just weird that I only really learned about those characters from Smash >_>

(And for those that used to watch me stream, I still have not unlocked Wolf in Brawl, 10 years later)

I remember reading about Earthbound in a magazine, then completely forgetting the game existed until I saw Ness in Smash

I was confused Falcon didn't have his punch when I looked into the series afterwards

which eventually got cancelled and became FE6 on GBA

I found out about Fire Emblem when Fire Emblem 7 became super popular for the GBA, which is like 2-3 years after Melee came out
