People constantly asking for money. If you want to go out with friends, they assume you pay every time for everybody(including people you don't know/like). Getting use to a life you can't substain once the money runs out. Possible murder. Things like that?

I imagine I'd have to move to a Bel Air private community or somewhere similar as California is one of the states where you cannot accept the winnings via proxy.

It has been demonstrated many times in the past that there are all kinds of crazy/dumb people who get it in their heads that if they kill a winner they will somehow get the money.

I'm not really worried about being irresponsible with my money or going bankrupt, but people being after my money and possibly murdering me are huge downsides. I kind of hate rich people for living lavish lifestyles but I sort of understand it to the extent that insulating yourself from less wealthy people is a necessity for your own safety. Becoming rich overnight must be a strain on your personal relationships. People who slowly build wealth or were born wealthy probably get used to having wealthy people in their life and don't have to worry as much about their inner circle going after their money. But when you get a sudden windfall? Well, I don't think any of my friends would straight-up murder me, but I know plenty of people I don't trust not to do shady shit. Nobody wants to abandon their friends and family, though.

If I won that much money I would probably buy an island in the Pacific, have all of my necessities air-dropped to me, and shoot anybody who steps foot on my island.

That said, I don't play the lottery so no worry of that happening. The lottery is really just a cleverly disguised poor tax anyways.

I'll buy lottery tickets every once in a while but I'm starting to question why. I know I have no chance of winning, but why waste the money when that's the case? And if I did win, I would be pretty freaked out by the possible dangers. I guess the best-case scenario for me would be getting a modestly large prize (like six figures) but I could just play scratch tickets since those jackpots are much lower. Plus with scratch tickets you actually win sometimes. It's not much, but even just winning enough that you can get a free drink next time you go to the gas station is kind of nice

But if you get a good bank, it will be safe.

Also people asking. Most people would come out the woodwork to ask for money even though they weren't even there for the major moments in my life.

Edit: But even then, I'm pretty safe. Worst comes to shove, I transfer all my money to my military brother and any time I need money, I would tell him what to get for me.

If you win $4 on a $2 ticket you get your money back plus enough to buy a drink. Unless you're trying to say it's an investment, which yeah I guess it is, but such a small one. If you don't even have $2 you can free up you shouldn't be buying any scratch tickets

It's actually true that many people get severely depressed (not always right away) after they literally have nothing left to aim for.

Winning the lottery gives you access to anything you want in life. This can actually have a reverse effect and cause you to become depressed, which often leads to blowing the money and then, even worse, you end up running out of money and have to go from a lavish lifestyle with everything you want, to broke, which is far worse then never having it all.

Now there are solutions that can give you a very happy life. Find a cause, even if it's just a school that you start, and hand select great teachers that you work with etc, and focus on that. Live a good, comfortable life, but don't blow the money and don't just buy everything you could ever want. Focus on finding good people to work with, and have in your life, and being happy. You don't need millions to do that, but it will sure expedite the process, and you will have the ability to help the good people you find, and ensure things actually work out (which is not usually the case).

If I won the lottery I would do a few things like that. I wouldn't try to save the world, it's too big, and my money would barely make a difference.

I would try and make a difference in good peoples lives, spend my time and money building up people and giving those who have the motivation and desire to make the world a better place. I would find a few great people to work directly under me, looking for other people who can make a difference and then we would provide them with the means to do so.

That would be rewarding, and would be a great use of the money.

The biggest problem is obviously going to be people crawling out of the woodwork to get a cut of the winnings. Much of my family is well enough off that they'd probably never bother to ask, but you'd be surprised...

My wife and I would probably just take a portion of that $350M, say $20M each, and that's the "giving away" portion to spread around as we saw fit. If we won less than $10M, I wouldn't share it.

My parents already only consider me to be expendable income to them. So that would definitely intensify. They'd expect a free ticket to anything they want. If I'd refuse, things would likely turn nasty because I could afford it. Then there'd be the usual family beggars who only show up when they want something. I'm sure that'd include my brother and his wife, probably expecting a huge handout whenever they want.

Seriously, if I ever got rich, I'd just have to cut ties with everyone I know and leave. At least I'd be able to afford such a move then, but I'd be even more alone afterwards. So yeah, not great options.

Why are people acting like everyone in the country will suddenly go to any lengths to get some money once you win the lottery? For instance:

WastelandCowboy posted...

This is literally assuming that regular people memorize the names (and presumably faces) of everyone who wins the lottery so if they ever meet them they'll be able to get some cash. At worst you'll probably have scummy family and friends trying to get something, not a country-wide conspiracy out to get you.

Yeah when they announce a lottery winner's name I don't even remember it like a day after. Most of the people who wind up going nuts with the money or offing themselves are guys who have never had money in the first place. If you've lived responsibly all your life, that's probably not a huge concern.

Of course, the bigger issue is friends and family hounding you for cash as well as becoming a target for thieves, etc. Still better to have the money.

Honestly, if I won a major jackpot, I'd probably try to set up an entertainment or gaming company of some sort. Even if it was a small net loss, it'd be okay as long as I was making the kind of stuff I enjoyed. In general, I don't ever want to not work. That would depress the fuck out of me. It's probably why Arctic was such a miserable guy.

In general, I'm starting to think ICO gets a bad shake after getting a fuller measure of his main complainants. Given how vicious Jen, RC, Mead, etc, are, I'm beginning to suspect that they're as hyperbolic against ICO as they are against the other victims of their constant abuse. It's even possible that some of ICO's shit was brought on by their attacks. (Not that I'm considering unblocking ICO just yet, because I added him for spamming topics.)
