I went like a decade without visiting an eye doctor until a coupon came on an ad in the paper and I figured WTH, so I went and the optometrist there said I had a stigmatism. Not really a surprise. But she ordered some glasses for me and told me I have to wear them 24/7 now. This is going to take some serious getting used to. I look different, I feel different, my depth perception is off and rectangular objects are currently shaped like trapezoids, and I have to learn not to touch the freaking lenses (which is so not going to happen).

I'll adapt, I'm sure. It's not the most unbearably awful thing. It's just...not me, though.

Carry a few lens wipes in your pocket for the first few weeks. That way you're prepared if you smudge them.

Will do.

I just took the first real look at myself in the mirror. Most of the time people think I look younger than I am, but I think I just went from about 10 years younger to 10 years older.

I promise that you'll get used to the visual distortion, at least. It really threw me off for a few days but it felt natural pretty quickly.

Yeah, you get used to it pretty quick, I've had glasses for about 5 years now.

Also, expect your vision to get worse without them. I can't even read a McDonalds menu if I don't have mine.

I was worried about looking goofy too, but it turned out I feel more comfortable with them, and sort of look like a doofus without.

Does it actively get worse, is it because your eyes adjust to a new norm, or do you just hold your vision to a new standard?

Your eyes adjust to the glasses, so your vision without the glasses is worse, from what I understand.

I've worn them since I was six years old, so mine has naturally gotten worse anyway, but I definitely noticed that happening.

I've worn glasses since I was eleven. I remember being able to sort of see the board when I was a kid. Now I can't see anything more than a foot away, if that.

I've had the same prescription for the last decade but I went from only using glasses to read the board in class to needing them to read a book comfortably. I still don't understand how my eyesight isn't measurably worsened but it's apparently the same.

I ran out of contacts and had to wear glasses for a week until I got new ones. It was one of the worst weeks of my life.

Fuck glasses

n3rd

I started wearing glasses when I was 8 and wore them until I got contacts when I was 15-16. I still have a pair of glasses in case I'd absolutely need them for some reason but I hate them. The area I can see outside of the lenses in my peripheral vision bothers me terribly. But I also have astigmatism and my contacts are acuvue oasys. I'd highly recommend you try them out but it may require another exam to get a trial pair

Ive been wearing glasses for 20 years.
The prescription has basically stayed the same and I actually used a pair from 2000 as a backup for a few weeks earlier this year.

Generally your eyes get worse like everything else as you age.

I will always remember 4th-5th grade though. Perfect to not in an instant.

Oh fuck no. I am so incredibly sensitive about my eyes -- the physical parts of them -- that when I tried to be in a play in high school, I reflexively lashed out at the people trying to put makeup on me. If I can't even do mascara, why should I believe I could ever put something in my eyes, and have it slide around and shit? No, just writing those words on the screen makes me squirm. It's a phobia. If you had to break me very quickly, all you would have to do is tie me in place and put a sharp object near my eyes...probably not even super close at that. Three inches away would probably do it.
