Villain only, nothing else matters

I've been watching a lot of slasher movies lately. It struck me how much more fun Freddy is than Josen and Michael.

I really feel Psycho doesn't count. It inspires the genre, but I think it predates it.

That's like saying Chuck Berry inspired Rock 'n Roll but doesn't count as Rock 'n Roll. It does, it's just early Rock 'n Roll.

Freddy is definitely my fave, for being able to have humor & character whilst still posing a dangerous threat. He has the most potential for straight-up horror as well especially in Craven's Nightmare films.

I disagree. I think it's more like something that predates rock and roll that inspired it, not that I know what rock and roll comes from.

Micheal Myers hands down. For his simplistic nature, his unexplainable pathology and seemingly blind hatred for all living things.
When a character does not have to speak and his legend and presence is enough to inspire fear, that is unique and all the more terrifying. He represents unstoppable and irretrievable evil, a void that sucks in all light.
Norman Bates is the o.g and his character is complex and his evil can be explained and to a certain degree, empathized with. The abuse he endured as a child/teenager is the core of his pathology where micheal myers is an unexplainable evil. It simply is. That is genius from a writing and character standpoint. He is a human and literal boogeyman. Not a smiling face behind the front desk of a motel with a darkness within but a darkness that starts in his eyes and consumes every fire of his being.

2.Norman Bates

It's a little unfair because his weapon makes up for his silence, but Leatherface is I think the best villain in that trope. Sure Michael's blank, emotionless mask, and tendency to lurk in the background are creepy, but Leatherface is straight-up wearing a dude's face. And just the sound of a chainsaw in a horror context freaks me out.

My Top 5 are:

1. Norman
2. Leatherface
3. Sam (Trick 'r Treat)
4. Esther (Orphan)
5. Jess (Triangle)
