Over the last couple weeks, I occasionally see trash news stories saying that there's a new track that's most watched on YouTube, that it's stayed at the top of billboard charts for non-English songs, that it this, that it that...and I hadn't heard of it anywhere outside those articles. Normally when a track is that hot, like Gangnam Style was, you actually freaking hear about it from people.

But eventually I said, okay, fine. I'll listen to it. And y'know what? It's...pleasant. That's really about it. I don't dislike the song. It's all right. Nothing I'd listen to, normally, but I can see it being on the radio...I guess. But most viewed video of all time?? What does it have going for it, exactly? Is it the lyrics? I mean, it must be, because it's certainly not the tune.

Maybe I should walk the streets of the town I live in more then. There's a huge Mexican population here. But what makes this song better than other ones in its genre? That's all I want to know. It sounds relatively generic to me.

"Baby" was also the most-watched video on YouTube at one point so I don't think there's a whole lot of stock to take from that.

like all the other times a song hits it really big I can understand why even if it doesn't appeal to me, but I really cannot see what made this particular song so successful.

Either that's a regional thing, or it says something about our taste in music. I can scarcely think of a non-English song that would be played on the radio in this area anywhere outside of the stations devoted to Spanish music, of which there aren't many.

Dimly aware, yes, but I haven't heard that either.

Then again, I couldn't name one song by Justin Bieber, and probably wouldn't know if I was listening to him in the first place.
