Thinking about finding a personal trainer to hrlp me learn proper form/technique

Also the bodily difference you get when you use weights instead of machine equipment is insane. Plus i can finally see what all the hype is for the squat rack

Save your money. Between muscle mags and YouTube you're golden. As for tips, that's a pretty general question. What I tell all the new guys I lift with is to leave your ego at the door so you don't hurt yourself trying to handle something outside your strength, especially if you don't have a spotter.

This is honestly the best tip for anyone starting weight training. Don't let someone else's pace dictate yours. Have a goal in mind and get there progressively.

Also, if you've never lifted before, just know you'll get crazy gains for the first few months, so don't expect it to stay that way.

They pretty much covered it. I can't tell you the amount of kids on the team who try to keep pace with their partners who are stronger then them and fail to hit quality reps.

Once you've been lifting for a while and get a better idea of your progression/limits, set up a system where you try to hit a small tangible goal every couple of weeks. I did that during the season and managed to build my squat up to 506 or so which admittedly isn't crazy but I don't think I would have ever hit if I just blasted myself every day.

Eat tons of carbs and avoid protein at all costs - your muscles love carbs especially for recovery. drink lots of gatorade to stay hydrated. Foods like grapes and lettuce are amazing. Only workout once a week and always at night with no more than 4 hours of sleep for recovery. Good luck.

Use weight you can handle, and go slow and steady with your reps. By that I mean don't just hammer out as many as you can, but go slowly, and always use proper form. You should be able to feel the strain on the specific group you are working if doing it correctly. I recommend sets of 8-12. It's a nice intermediary between gaining mass/defenition. Nutrition is just as important though. Get some carbs and protein in you asap after the workout.

What if I don't wanna be big/bulky but tones and slim (Not super ripped, but well defined) would I do higher sets (like 12-20) with middle size waits?

I'd prefer to just have solid definition I really don't want to get bulky/too much muscle

That's the same goal as me. I'm already a big guy, so I just like to stay toned. I'd say go lower at first to build the muscle, then higher to sculpt what you have. You're not going to build much muscle, if any, with high reps; that's for endurance. You have to strain the muscle to create microtears in it, that induces hypertrophy. Nutrition is key, your body needs the tools to recover. Also, at least 24-48hrs of rest for each muscle group before training again. I like to hit everything twice a week. Find whatever works for you. I have the luxury of a private gym in my house, so I can go whenever. I know that's not the case for most. But for example, I'll do arms and shoulders one day, legs the next, then chest and back. I'll usually follow that up with a cardio only or rest day, then back to arms on day 7.

head over to bodybuilding.com and check out their premade programs. see if there are any you're interested in doing. they have a ton of beginner programs that help ease you into working out. they have videos and stuff to show you how to do them.

download the bodyspace app on your phone and track your workout while you're at the gym. it's really easy.

Getting 'toned' is basically a myth. If you wanna get toned, lose body fat.

Yes, but the muscle has to be there to begin with. For cutting, go ketogenic diet.

Yup, forgot to mention that. It's a common misconception that junk food is bad - but it's actually really good since you can gain weight so fast which is your goal when trying to build muscle (which muscle = weight).

It's actually not that bad if you get some sugar or simple carbs IMMEDIATELY after a workout, because it triggers an insulin spike. In moderation, of course. I just put a banana and oats in my shakes post workout.
