There's a man by the name of John Cena who has overcome the odds a million times and has been the stale, stereotypical good guy for over a decade now to the point where the fans hate him, but he's so popular with the kids they cannot sacrifice the merch sales by letting him turn heel (go to the dark side). Rey is the John Cena of Star Wars now. Little kids love her. GIRLS (their new target market) love her. Feminists love her. Can you imagine the feminist backlash alone if their favorite little Mary Sue turns heel? "What does this say about women that one gains perfect control of the universe's greatest power and she instantly lets it corrupt her?" You would be able to read that exact article all over the web days after Episode 8's release. Rey can't turn to the dark side. Now, it would be cool to see her at least STRUGGLE with it and need some help (from Finn maybe?) to resist its temptations. SOMETHING to make us relate to her as a character that faces feasible obstacles instead of someone who can figure out the Jedi mind trick on her own in 5 minutes while being held captive.
