I think at this point, we have to consider the possibilty that us hating them is their actual goal.

I do believe this is the greatest example of the pot calling the kettle black in the history of using the phrase "pot calling the kettle black." That's not even hyperbole. MPAA calling someone out for abusing power is the most brilliant example of hypocrisy I have ever heard of!

this actually brings up an interesting question - does anyone know if a site/list already exists that compiles all of the corporations and such that support SOPA/PIPA, etc.

I have a feeling none of them will be seeing any money from me ever again

Sony and Nintendo have both pull their support for SOPA though... Bigger problem though would be that both MasterCard and Visa are supporting it. Have fun trying to live in the 21st century without a debit/credit card.

From my understanding, Visa makes their money from the vendors who have to pay to use the service, which benefits them because nobody is going to shop at a store that doesn't allow credit/debit cards. So it's a pretty complex contract they have going on.

If you pay off all of your bills in time for a credit card, I wouldn't think they would get anything. They might get something off the debit card. I'm not really sure though.

I imagine that your bank somehow makes money through having your funds, and they give some of that to VISA or something like that.

This all seems really complicated.

They typically charge merchants a fee whenever you use your card. Not sure if it applies to debit transactions or only credit, though.

you know, I was on board until I found out about MasterCard and Visa.

I see that you didn't discover Discover. Although, it's not as widely accepted as Visa and MasterCard, so there's still a problem.

yeah I don't have to worry about that I am very good at managing my finances

still, taken to the absolute extreme what's the worst I would have to do anyway? actually go inside to pay for my gas instead of paying at the pump. uh, driving to the bank occasionally to take out money to make sure I have some for when I need to buy stuff. . . shopping online might get a bit harder

can't think of anything beyond that

When you deposit money in a bank, they will take your money and loan it out to other people. They earn interest from that. Basically, your bank earns money from your money.

It's more complicated than that of course, but there's the simple version of that!

even if I'm not able to live without relying on Mastercard and Visa I still plan to not provide any funds for SOPA supporting companies to any extent I am able to, even if it inconveniences me or I have to miss out on things that I really want. and I would seriously urge others to do the same here, since I consider this act an attack on freedom and I consider that a very serious thing.

I think it would be too difficult to be that exacting about boycotts. I mean, I'd have to go to the store and decide what f***ing brand of chicken nuggets to buy based on who supports SOPA or not. It's a nice thought, but I'm not going to go that far.

lefty posted a link above that has some information. I remember someone a while ago posted a nice list now that I'm thinking on it but I didn't save it or anything sadly. if someone could post a good, easy resource (like, just a list that people could look at) here in this topic that would be pretty great.

you should do what you can -- don't use the fact that you can't take it to the extreme as an excuse not to do what you can. people doubting how much it will matter/hesitating to take a stand will be the greatest weakness in a situation like this. the more people who join in, even if they can only do something small, the bigger impact it will make.

I'm not blindly 'boycotting SOPA', I said that no SOPA supporting company will ever see my money again. I don't pay to use GameFAQs.

edit; example, even if Sony WAS supporting SOPA I'd still use my PS3, I just wouldn't buy any new games for it
