Like my copy of Braid and Limbo, among many others, will transfer over si? I'm counting on the fact that one of you have a time machine and are here from the future.

Not the wii. You know Nintendo are uselsss when it comes to this stuff. They charging you for the same VC games on 3DS that are on Wii FFS.
Your games and content are attached to your gamer profile, so no reason why they should be merged. i think they will have system transfers to new console too. PS3-PS4 will most likely be the same.
On the PS3, everything is attached to your account, not your system, so when the PS4 releases, it'd be as simple as going on PSN and redownloading your old purchases, or transferring them through USB. Nintendo will be the tricky one, but Sony and Microsoft already have digital distribution platforms in place, so there won't be any need to create entire new ones and wipe all the content currently on the servers.

I don't understand the discussion. From what we've experienced, backwards compatibility is harder to achieve now and we shouldn't expect it. PS3 and 360 had bad backwards compatibility (and Wii only had it because it used near identical hardware), and it's only going to be tougher as they move forward with custom hardware that isn't like the previous console gen. Do you guys know something I don't?
Nintendo's recent 3DS update allows you to transfer the contents of an old 3DS to a new one. The important thing here is that it will allow you to transfer an ambassador 3DS to a new one, which seems like a good first step for Nintendo in this field. I don't profess to know if the DS had a transfer program quite like it.
Nothing Nintendo does will surprise me, but I think it'd be crazy for them to try and sell the same virtual platform all over again on the next hardware platform.
I would expect Sony/MS to allow you to re-download content attached to your account.

That shouldn't be much of an issue in regards to downloadable games. Games like Braid and Limbo are on the PS3 and 360, plus the PC -- that game isn't using anything hardware specific. Sony, at least, has some precedent for 'transfer' -- any PSP games you downloaded will transfer over to the Vita; PS1 games only had to be bought once, and they could be played on the PS3 or PSP, and ultimately Vita. PSN and XBL won't 'start over' when new consoles come out, they'll still have the majority of that content available on day 1, because that's the appeal of digital distribution.

Don't they have to change stuff for ports between 360 and PS3? I was under the impression that that's why the PS3 version of Capcom games is usually worse. It's not just one set of code they release on all platforms.
As far as PS1 games go, I assume they wrote a PS1 emulator in a portable language, which they couldn't really do for 360 or PS3.

It's an assumption on my part. My assumption is that digitally distributed games are a priority for MS and Sony and thus they won't tell people that all those XBLA/PSN games they bought are worthless.
I wouldn't compare digital distribution with disc games because we haven't really seen consoles handle this before.

What do you mean 'worse,' exactly? BCR on the PS3 and 360 are pretty much the same. MM9/10, too. BCR2 has the 'must be online' DRM on the PS3, but otherwise they should play the same. I can't say I know the details of what the coding involved with these digital games is, but I do know they're not nearly as tied to the console hardware as, say, Uncharted might be. It's hard for me to see a situation where the hardware next-gen has a hard time playing these downloadable games coming out right now, and that they would need to be redone to work and play properly.
I think the content on PSN and XBL would be a priority for Sony and Microsoft going forward, and they would make sure people going to the PS4 or Xbox 720 could expect not only that their previously bought games will still work but also that there will be a full store of games ready to purchase. It's an easier bet to make than actual PS3/360 BC, I would say.

I'd be pretty happy if it works that way, I'm just skeptical. I'll be pleasantly surprised if my skepticism is unfounded.

oh I mistyped, didn't mean to list all Capcom games which I have no idea about. I was talking about how the FG community considers the PS3 ports of Capcom fighters consistently worse. more input lag I guess, maybe other stuff or maybe not.
there's more I was thinking about though - how Skyrim has unique problems to the PS3 that 360 and PC don't, or how most things that release for 360 also release for PC but that's not always the case for PS3 games. I know absolutely nothing about the differences in hardware, just wondering based on what we've seen.

That's because they stopped using hardware BC. Wiis and PS2s and the early PS3s actually had the GCN/PS1/PS2 hardware inside so that you could play old games. Just emulating stuff is a lot simpler, but you need more power for it.
For me, the question is what'll happen with the full PS3/360 games that you downloaded, not the smaller XBLA-type games. Like, if I bought Mass Effect on the Marketplace and downloaded it, will I still be able to play it on the Xbox 720?
This is exactly why (a) I'm glad I play the majority of my stuff on a computer, and (b) why I don't buy music digitally. Sure, it'll take longer, but someday iTunes will be gone, too. Then again, with all the PC games going the way of Steam, it doesn't much seem to matter if I have a physical copy, but at least that transcends obsolete hardware.
