I finally got around to seeing Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. I know this is a low bar, but it's the best sequel of the bunch. There's just one thing that bothers me.

Egon's granddaughter and a ghost girl strike up a friendship while their eyes, their body language, and their hesitancy to say what they really feel suggests lesbian chemistry. Never do they kiss and never do they confess their feelings. Hold that thought because I want to mention a couple of other movies.

In Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Zia actor Danielle Pineda was upset about the line being cut, "I dont date men, but if I did, it would be you. It would gross me out, but Id do it." It's the most ham-fisted I'm Gay line in the history of cinema, but the fact that it was cut for the international market makes it a matter of censorship.

In Terminator: Dark Fate, Grace, the Terminator woman from the future, is clearly in love with Dani. Yet, she dies just before she confesses it. They dance around her motivation for volunteering and her last words are, "I... I...." (The words you were looking for were, "love you.")

Fallen Kingdom had a backlash over the censorship. Dark Fate and Frozen Empire seem to have engaged in self-censorship by having obviously gay characters who never get to have their moment where they identify themselves or have any romance.

I can only conclude one of two things:
1) The nations we market to with hostile governments to LGBTQ people do not want films that cut out gay kisses. They only want to market films that never had LGBTQ characters to begin with.
2) Studios have caught on to the backlash from censoring films in other countries and have opted instead to remove gayness altogether. You can't censor LGBTQ characters if they aren't LGBTQ to begin with.

It's very disheartening. I worry that we're reaching a point where characters in movies aren't going to be allowed to be gay, but you'll be able to see them and their partners happily together on the streaming-exclusive spinoff shows. No same sex relationships in the theaters though. Winnie the Pooh and certain religious leaders would not approve.

If it's wrong to do it with the dead, it logically follows it's right to do it with the undead. They're opposites!

That is a form of censorship though.

If you, I don't know, tease in the trailer that two women are going to be a couple and then one of them turns out to be the love interest of the male hero, that would be baiting audiences. If you have two men or two women, and they have all of the earmarks of a couple, and they would be a couple if not for a mandate saying that they can't be a couple, that's censorship.

It probably wasn't the choice of the director or the screenwriters. It probably wasn't self-censorship. I think they were all on board for having an LGBTQ female lead who saves the world and the producers were like, "Nah."

I don't think it was really censored in Frozen Empire.

But it was pretty obvious Phoebe had a thing for Melody.

Like yeah neither one came out and said how they felt but the look Phoebe's mom and Gary gave Phoebe at least acknowledged it.

I immediately picked up on Phoebe and Melody.

I wouldn't call it censorship though.

Well, Ray (if he was around the same age as Aykroyd) was 32. McKenna Grace was 17 when this was filmed (and looked a lot younger).

It's partly the same reason they didn't make any references to America Chavez being a lesbian in Multiverse of Madness, because Xochitl Gomez was only 14 when they filmed it.

You can't possibly not realize that having a gay teenager in a mass-market film is an invitation to that film being ripped to shreds by right-wing media, because something something it's bad for the children.

The studios don't want to have to deal with that, so they don't allow it. Simple.

Okay, Disney, why is it bad for a 14-year-old to be a lesbian? I know they've had gay kids in Owl House.

A boy and a girl can hold hands, share a quick kiss, or express their feelings for one another and nobody accuses the filmmakers of any wrongdoing. But if a character is homosexual, that's homoSEXUALITY -- which is inherently more sexual than heterosexuality. For some reason.

Personally, I don't think it's bad. But as I stated above, they know that Fox News and the right wing will screech about it, and that will cost them money, and they can't have that.

Yeah it is annoying. Of course when you ask a conservative whose trying to ban any book with LGBT characters that simple question. They have no answer. It should be no different if a heterosexual couple kiss and a gay couple and yet to countless people they think ones okay and the other is unsuitable for kids.

For all the talk of how woke our media is, it really isn't.

To be fair, they did drop Owl House, saying that it didn't fit for the Disney brand. Shame, because it was a fantastic show. I hope stuff like this stops as younger generations start take over these companies.

I legit don't remember any romantic chemistry in Terminator: Dark Fate. The movie was already a really hamfisted feminism woke movie, so i'm not sure why they would feel the need to censor a possible gay romance. Haven't seen the latest Ghostbusters, but everyone already knew the character was gonna be gay when the trailer dropped for the last movie.

Disney sort of wants it both ways with some of their shows. It's why the creator of Gravity Falls had to repeatedly insist that the two cops were just really, really, really good friends that shared their lives with each other when making the show, even as Disney later advertised the characters as being LGBTQ friendly.

Meanwhile, with The Owl House the show was dropped mostly by one executive under the pretext of wanting thought-free episodic content. It's weird because the first season has an amazing ramp up from episode to episode, to the point that even some random executive SHOULD be able to sense the building excitement over the show.

There's a really abrupt cut after Franklin rescues Zia. She starts to squeeze his cheeks, then it just moves on to the next shot. I thought that's where she was supposed to have said the line, but Danielle Pineda said in an interview that the line was supposed to be in reference to Chris Pratt as Owen. So, maybe there was another line that was cut. Or maybe they cut something else as well.
