eclipse glasses are a thing. and the coolest part about the upcoming one is going to be experiencing totality, not staring up at the covered up sun.

I don't get why it's a big deal. there were a couple I remember as a kid and it was just a thing the weather channel mentioned, not a thing anyone traveled to see.

I'm close enough to a total eclipse point that it will get annoyingly dark for a few minutes. I'll have to make sure I'm not driving at that time.

Ive seen a weird amount of posts online that think the eclipse is risky to look at. Do people not know about eclipse glasses?

A full eclipse like this is also pretty infrequent. I dont blame people for wanting to travel for it.

I live in eastern MA and there's a week in the fall and a week in the spring where I drive home at 3pm and the sun is just a gigantic ball of fire directly at eye level. like, picture the regular size sun, and this one is 5 times that size and a very angry dark orange. most people usually go 80 on the highway, but everyone has to slow down to 30.

I put my sunglasses on and put my visor down, but it's still worse than trying to see in a blizzard or a hurricane

It must suck for the people who have to drive while the eclipse is in progress and their reason for driving is unrelated to the eclipse. Such as driving to work or coming home from work. Those people might accidentally catch a glimpse of the sun with unprotected eyes if the sun happened to enter their field of view while driving. I'm not sure if this hypothetical scenario would run the risk of causing eye damage to someone's eyes if the exposure to the sun was very brief. Eclipse sunglasses can't be worn while driving for eye protection against possibly getting an accidental glimpse of the sun.

The eclipse wont vaporize your eyes if you just get a glimpse of it when driving.

Continuous exposure to your eyes would likely cause more damage than the sun usually would, but if youre not intentionally staring it down its not dangerous.

It's not like it's some kind of eldritch abomination that will blind you as soon as you look at it. People who damage their eyesight during eclipses do so because they think that because it's not as bright, it's not as dangerous, so it's okay to just stare at it for minutes on end. If I were driving, I'd just be annoyed that the roads will all be jam-packed with people viewing the eclipse.

Yep, Amazon had this problem in the lead-up to the 2017 eclipse where poor regulatory oversight over the products being sold on their site allowed for eclipse sunglasses to be sold that did not offer sufficient protection for sun viewing (or worse, absolutely no protection at all). I do hope Amazon took this matter much more seriously for the 2024 eclipse.
